Much as I’ve admired Hodge’s career work, there were those who might have felt it was Hodge who got Hodge fired.

He really only had one big hit on the pop charts - Go Away Little Girl, a #1 Billboard hit in 1963.

“It didn’t attract me as much,” he told the website Classicbands.com. “I grew up in a time period when music was written by Irving Berlin and Cole Porter and George and Ira Gershwin and Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart and Sammy Cahn and Julie Stein. Those people, I related to what they were writing because it was much more melodic. It as an intelligent lyric that was written. By and large these people were bright, educated or extremely gifted.”

I’ve always considered myself lucky to have grown up straddling two musical eras: pop standards and what became
’modern pop.’ The first two Steve Lawrence songs that grabbed my attention gave us one from each, and in the same
year — 1959. There’ll Be Some Changes Made and Pretty Blue Eyes. Both are on my iPhone and sprinkled liberally on all the various iterations around the house. Lifelong fan.
In 2003, Lawrence, in his advancing years, kept on chooglin’. He took the songbook given to him by the Chairman of
the Board and released a superb mail-order album called Steve Lawrence Sings Sinatra - A Musical Tribute To The Man And His Music.
If you ever get a chance and are of a mind to, give it a listen. He was in his 60s then, and hadn’t lost a step.

Normally a kicker on NBC Nightly News is about 2 minutes long or less. This one was closer to 6 minutes, but it was terrific. No words, just a lot of music and good video from the greats we said goodbye to this year. They came from the world of entertainment, sports, politics and music. And yes, they included Gordon Lightfoot and Robbie Robertson.

Very well put together and worth a look here if you're interested. I wondered who the last person pictured would be and in retrospect, it should not have surprised me.

We usually watch NBC at 6:30. Val got up and as the tribute started, not expecting anything special…went out to the
kitchen, while I kept watching and was blown away. The one thing that stood out was the sheer number of *really*
famous artists and personalities who left us in 2023.
Thanks, RA, for the link for those who missed it.

SOWNY » A Memory For Mike Marshall » November 12, 2023 2:07 pm

For the life of me, I don’t (as Ivanka was saying the other day) “recall” the reason for the Bobby getup.
Judging by the CHML sign in the window plugging “Michael Marshall” in Stoney Creek, it would have been
early days for me (1962) in Hamilton, when Tom Darling was still trying to decide whether it was going to
be Michael or Mike. It became Mike soon after.

This is a picture that’s been up here in two iterations. First time, believe posted by Don Daynard, was a tight
crop of me only, and then again in the much wider original pic with others in the photo, the one just posted by
RA. In that take, the woman nearest me was a CHML Hostess and the lady who appeared to be playing the
part of the “flapper” was (a guess) employed by A & W. The latter looks like she’s wearing an apron and is
carrying some root beer in some form out to a car.

Interesting, maybe not, there's an even wider shot, probably *thee* original that’s been up at A & W Appleby
Line Burlington for quite some time. A copy from another source? Possibly, from another Dub customer?
At this point, who knows?

SOWNY » Odd October Radio Ratings In Detroit » November 2, 2023 2:22 pm

I don't know much about Detroit radio but I do look at the Detroit Radio Discussions forum and Michigan Buzzboard.  Both of these generally are not as active as SOWNY.

What caught my eye was the October ratings which seemed strange for a city like Detroit.  The number one station last month was 97.1 The Ticket a sports station.  They had a 10.1 share with a cume of 700,800. The station is actually outside of Detroit and puts out 15,000 watts.  In July they had a 6.7 share.  They are the home of the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and Lions.  October marks the return of NFL football and looks like the ratings went up a lot from the summer.

NFL could have something to do with it. Lions keep getting better, 6-2 on the season. Also, Stevie Y continues to
build the NHL franchise, currently 6-3-1 for 2nd in the Atlantic. Lots to talk about.

This is the second Friday in a row that Apple+ broadcasts the Jays. It could be my imagination but

because I don’t enjoy the games on Apple. Sportsnet TV does a much better job, in just about every

CHFI for sure! Jared Bernatt (who was in charge of the behemoth known as Studio 98) and I
did the Ex for years on the weekends, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Not sure, but Brian Master
may have done a few drive-home weekday stints, too.

I believe the Ex was the first time we broadcast from the ailing monster, which seemed to quickly
lead to being out almost every weekend at Ontario Place, Canada’s Wonderland, Cullen Gardens,
car and trade shows…all over hell’s half-acre, wherever there was a good crowd or one that we could
possibly generate. Toronto Zoo. It was quite a list and a lot of fun. Good memories.

One other thing that caught my attention on this chart was the fact that "Did You See Her Eyes" by the Illusion was a CHUM Charger. I had read about that group but never heard them until I obtained a tape of an air check of WWWW FM from Detroit where they play the song.

CKLW got interested in the track before it became a single. Believe it was almost 7-minutes long but Rosalie
felt it could be a hit if a part or parts were deleted.
Hugh Turnbull in Production worked his razor blade magic, prior to the tune’s 45 release and the record company may have even used his edit.
Rosie was right, of course. The song went top 10 in Windsor/Detroit, peaking at #7 July 8, 1969 on the
Big 30.

RadioActive wrote:

It's not often you hear someone recalling the glory days of old radio tech on the air, but after their morning newscaster accidentally played the wrong clip on the 6 AM news, CFRB host John Moore came back on and started talking about the days when radio stations used carts and noted that kind of thing happened all the time.

He then went on to describe what they were, what they looked like (picture an 8-track shape cartridge) and how you'd come into the studio with a ton of them stacked up and then accidentally trip and see them go flying onto the control room floor - and completely out of order.

Reminds me of a feature that we ran in Edmonton in the mid ‘60s. Bob McCord brought it back from one of
his gigs in Texas (KLIF Dallas, KILT Houston).**
A couple of times per show, we’d take a caller who’d get to choose an oldie she/he’d like to hear from the
CHED Golden Wheel.
On a lengthy ‘loop’ cart, there were a fair number of heavies, couple of seconds long, each separated with the sound of a clicking casino wheel.
Two turntables, one on each side of us, would be in motion. From a master stack of 45s, as the tape played,
we’d place (without cueing) the matching record on one of the turntables.
When the listener hollered “Stop, Golden Wheel!” we’d hit a jingle, cue the single, then fire the tune out
of the logo.
Imagine the horror when an earlier jock left the stack of 45s OUT OF ORDER!! Talk about living on the edge.

** Noticed the voice of Bob McCord on a recorded Rolling Stones concert promo on the Chuck Dunaway
1966 KILT aircheck this week at Dale’s RR Scrapbook.

Thanks to Ben Zonia on the Michigan board, who mentions this in reference to CKLW’s temporary
transmitter problem years back:

>> While CKLW soon returned to the air, as I recall, it operated with a 10000 watt backup transmitter for at least several weeks on 800. Since CKLW now focuses on just Windsor, rather than the large areas near Detroit and in Michigan and other nearby states like in The Big 8 era, listeners probably didn't notice much reduction where they listened. <<

During my first year at CK, we used to make a monthly midnight move to the recording studio, using
the backup for about three hours while engineering maintained the main transmitter and master
control. I always got a phone call from the Sunday night op at sister-station WRKO saying we were
booming in on reduced power to Boston. Wouldn’t have been surprised if there was at least one local
AM envious of the Big 8’s TWO signals.
