Tony Bennett, Last Of The Great Crooners, Gone At 96

He'd been living with Alzheimer's disease, which effectively put an end to a decades-long career. Outside of acolytes like Michael Bublé, he truly was the last of his generation

Tony Bennett, masterful stylist of American musical standards, dies at 96

I was able to interview Tony 4 times.  What a gentleman.  I guess it was inevitable; but it really saddens me.

RIP Mr. Bennett.

Tony Bennett never lost his singing voice to age. He aged gracefully.  Unlike many singers who can't perform at their best in their 70's and 80's, Tony's voice remained intact.  Even his last album in 2022 with Lady Gaga, the voice was immediately recognizable.  This last album was Bennett's 61st studio LP and he became the oldest person in history at age 95 to release an album of new material.  Almost all of his material from 1952 until 2022 was released on the Columbia label.

Not sure if I’ve managed to get this up?
Please click on the link for one of my favourite Tony Bennett songs — Penthouse Seranade.
I used to play this late at night on CHML in the early ‘60s:

A masterful performer, without question. But there was so much more to this wonderful man...

“This officer took out a razor blade and cut my corporal stripes off my uniform right then and there,” Bennett wrote. “He spit on them and threw them on the floor, and said, ‘Get your ass out of here!’”

Much more here...

He was one swingin' cool cat. He was also an accomplished painter, loving to dabble in oils and watercolors.

Re: Tony Bennett, Last Of The Great Crooners, Gone At 96

I got a chance to see him live about 12 years ago at the Royal Alex. Glad I did. About halfway through the show, he asked the sound guy to turn off his mic. He told the audience he was going to show young singers the importance of filling a room with just your voice. He sang acapella and it was truly amazing for a guy already in his 80's.
