Weather is not a big deal for radio as all you have to say nowadays is “Hey Sir/Alexa/Google, what’s the weather?” Why go into detail when you can get a weather report anytime as much as you want, instantly.

You were listening on the app from iHeart. I too get those ads and have asked about it. They are ads that are inserted by the streaming provider whenever the app is started or usually in the first position of a commercial during stopsets.

Well, I agree with you that they do sound very good, those top of the hour intros are easier to put together than it sounds. You produce the intro and extro, but then the hooks are often provided by a service or you can create them yourself, but then they are simply scheduled the same way you would schedule a song and the automation system puts it all together. There isn’t a person producing 24 of those for every day.
We edited the clips years ago for these. However, they are all picked manually (currently), by the amazing Mr. Wayne Webster.

I agree Jody there isn't always much overly compelling on radio, but I still enjoy listening . In terms of Tarzan Dan, I haven't heard his show on BOOM either but the fact it is done out west is irrelevant, even five years ago it wouldn't matter. He certainly would not move back to Toronto just to do a weekend show. It's just great that Dan is back on Toronto radio, even if only on the weekend. We are assuming his show is voice tracked. It could be live from XL 103 in Calgary. Doubtful but still possible.
FYI - Tarzan Dan is live on boom.

This is awesome! I remember him from the childhood days of AM 640 and CFTR. Boom is the perfect station these days for him.
Apples to oranges. He will most likely be a VT since he is keeping his week end shift on XL 103.
I'm guessing maybe (if this is what listeners want) he'll interview some famous artist and then play one of their songs.
The same vt'd interview could easily air on both stations.
I honestly do not know if he'll go to the phones or have a prize for callers...etc (anything that works best live)
You are incorrect. He will NOT be VT'd.

No one is pressuring anyone. During the month of December, contestants are asked to donate a minimum $25 to play, and boom matches the winnings after playing the game. What they do with their winnings, is totally up to them. It just so happens that (believe it or not), most of the people feel the spirit of giving & want to be part of something special, so they give their winning share back or, in some cases, match their winnings and donate that back as well.. Nothing to hate about helping a worthwhile charity.

SOWNY » classic rock songs you are sick of hearing » May 10, 2022 4:12 am |
Deep cuts = big loss in listeners. People like familiar songs to bring back memories and provide comfort. Playing a song that a majority of the population is unfamiliar with will cause them to change stations, which… in market 1 (PPM Toronto), not a smart strategic move.
As for songs getting complaints & getting pulled, not 100% true. Depending on the situation, some songs do get “rested” until a situation returns to normal or tapers off. Stations don’t pull songs because one person complains about it - that is ridiculous. One person does not speak for 1000’s or in Toronto’s case, millions.

Over 600 radio stations across Canada including "other" broadcasters and some grocery stores are all in for "A Day To Listen" all the participating radio stations have been airing ads and posting on socials about it for over 2 weeks now. I for one and am EXTREMELY proud of the industry for pulling together to address this shocking and terrible part of our history. Together we make sure our indigenous brothers, sisters, elders... voices ARE heard. Yes, it's uncomfortable to hear for some but good. It needs to be addressed and not swept under the rug. We confront it together and make sure it literally IS, "A Day To Listen".

I have to say I admire Boom's program minds. They seems to always come up with something original or interesting and they definitely seem to be in sync with their target audience. It shows in their on air sound and some of their concepts, and though I'm not much of a music listener anymore, I do appreciate when a station sets a format and then really executes it well. It shows in the ratings that they're doing just that.
Thank you, we have a pretty damn good team here!

Sounds like something Boom 97.3 did a few years ago, likely as a CCD expenditure. I just ran across it a few months ago, but all the CanCon greats are there... Glass Tiger, Honeymoon Suite, Biff Naked, Chilliwack, Gowan.... Fun stuff. Anyone have any further insight into these productions?
I have insight into the videos as I'm the producer/director/creator of the series. There was no CCD expenditure at all. No money changed hands what-so-ever, the idea (for BTV) stemmed from a Jimmy Page video I saw then we proceeded to ask artists to pop by and record an episode. We now have over 150 episodes and still going (once it's safe again). The series for "The First Time" was inspired by a conversation I had with Gowan about the first time Eddie Schwartz heard "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" on the radio - every artist has a "first time they heard their song on the radio" story. The First Time is also a way to pay homage to the radio industry at a time where popularity for the medium is wavering. Thanks for sharing the link and the opportunity to give some background.
Btw... Behind The Vinyl is now a podcast:

Drew (I think that is his name?) has been filling in.
Stu was on vacation AFTER the spring ratings were over (May 24th).
What I often wonder about the ratings that are post on here is why people continue to measure/post 12+ numbers? Buyers buy A25-54, not 12+. Stations target A25-54, not 12+. Side note: listening patterns have been seriously disrupted during Covid and overall Cume is down for everyone. I have several beliefs why some of the numbers are what they are: Comfort Food for the ears - people in times of stress/worry find comfort in the things they "know" and are "familiar with" ie: Older music they grew up with. Also, as a species we can only take so much when it comes to dire times - we have breaking points where it's information overload, which would explain larger numbers at the start of Covid for the News and talk stations but after a while... society is "okay... I need a break" and escape to avenues where they aren't inundated with information/bad news. They need hope and distraction. Classic Hits, Classic Rock and other stations that play slightly older music provide that. My thoughts. Stay well my friends.

The COVID-19-free idea is spreading like the virus. It's a lot easier to do the no-corona format when you're a music station. Much harder if all you do is talk.
Still, broadcasting giant WGN Chicago is pledging to do a virus-free Friday (outside of news updates) in which anyone who brings up the dread spread for the entire day is promptly reminded it's a no-go zone.
“If a caller, guest, or even you yourself accidentally brings it up, you get zapped [with a buzzer sound effect] like the opening scene of ‘Ghostbusters.’ . . . This is a great way for us to offer a break for all our listeners and potentially encourage new listeners. Since we are talk radio and rely on current events, this can be challenging, so do some off-the-wall topics.”

The "Stingray Newsroom" is a collective of broadcastors in the Stingray media chain of radio stations updating our markets nationally, every hour. So, basically... it's Canada wide on Stingray radio stations by Stingray employees.
