Stations Across The Country To Play Only CanCon Sat. In Solidarity

It's a message to Trump and the U.S. authorities, which I'm quite sure they won't even be aware of. But it's also symbolic for Canadians, who are tired of all the insults from across the border.

According to Alan Cross, the list of stations taking part in "Canadian Day" include many from - but not restricted to - Corus.

Among those taking part:

Boom 97.3
CJOY
Q107
FM 96 London
Dave Rocks
102.1 The Edge
Y108

There are many more and you can see the full list here.

I think Alan made a mistake with Boom because he mentions Boom 101.9 Cornwall but then Boom Toronto. I think he meant Boom 99.7 which is a Corus station

I'm curious to see how the ratings fare on the PPM stations. Small (one day) sample, but you'd think it would be pretty bad.

I thought that, too, at first. But here's another version of the story with the same stations listed - including Stingray's CHBM, referred to by those call letters. So unless they're both wrong, perhaps Boom is getting in on the act. Nothing on their site about it, though.

I know we have a member here named "Boomboy," who works at 97.3. Perhaps he can confirm one way or another.

Alan probably cribbed the RI story instead of getting the frequency of his company's station right.

Almost certainly it's meant to be Boom 99.7, but Toronto's Boom gets mentioned a fair bit on that site, so easy mistake.

Thanks for the warning. I shall not be listening.

The story on the Global website not only lists all the stations involved, but links to their respective websites. When you click on Boom 97.3, it goes to the Stingray station in Toronto. Make of that what you will.

O Canada! Corus FM Radio stations to play exclusively Canadian music March 1

For one day, can't see it would make any difference.  Like anything else you may lose some listeners and gain others.
Boom 97.3 seems to do alright on July 1st with their Canada Day marathon.  They have been doing this for years, and they always have a lot of commercials sold.  If it wasn't popular doubtful that so many ads would be on the program.

Re: Stations Across The Country To Play Only CanCon Sat. In Solidarity

If you go and read the story that is linked on Boom 99.7's website it also mentions Boom 97.3
It also mentions at the top of the article Corus stations and then lists off all the "Corus" stations taking part. Boom 99.7 is not listed but Stingray's Boom 97.3 is with the link to the Toronto website. I think whoever wrote the original post made a boo-boo and because of all the layoffs at Corus there is nobosy there to check it.

That’s not how ad buys work

But I agree that it’ll probably be a wash. If it’s promoted well, you’ll have more CUME (listeners) but the TSL (time spent listening) will go down.

I’ll post the results here Monday.

That’s embarrassing. Corus is literally promoting their main competitor in market #1

I know that the ROS ads will run anyway, but Boom's July 1st Canada Day programming usually has sponsors.

I have been listening to Q107 for about 45 minutes.  I rarely listen to Q and they sound good.  Consistently heavier than I remember.  For a rock station, always thought Q was a bit light.  I am glad that they have some content and not just playing a bunch of canuck music.  Some good stations breaks explaining the promotion and morning announcer Kella has been reading texts and had some listeners on air.

Some calls and breaks are a bit hokey, but hokey has a time and place.  Good on Corus for doing this today.  I will give a listen to some of our local Corus stations in K/W later today.  Apparently the all Canadian tunes go right up until midnight.

If the MAPL is there, it gets played as Canadian.

Re: Stations Across The Country To Play Only CanCon Sat. In Solidarity

In yesterday's list BOOM 99.7 in Ottawa was not there.  So, I phoned yesterday to see if it would be participating.
No one answered my call.  I left a message.  No return phone call.
Corporate incompetence telling me the state of what was once, a communication industry.

Broadcasters, always the best at communication within! The person who would have handled it was probably fired last week right before the genius in a board meeting that came up with this Canadian music saturday idea who didn't have an updated org chart or email list

First I have heard of this. Alan does not work for Stingray or any association with boom 97.3. However neat idea to consider.

Re: Stations Across The Country To Play Only CanCon Sat. In Solidarity

What's really weird about this is the story also ran on the Global News website - and it not only repeated the Boom 97.3 information, but actually linked to your station's website, instead of the one they obviously meant to use. Very odd and someone wasn't checking their links.

But just one thing - how can there be two different companies using the "Boom" moniker? Isn't that name copyrighted or proprietary in some way?

The "boom" moniker is actually owned by Bell Media, so I'm guessing Stingray and Corus pay some type of royalty fee to use it on their stations?
