Not sure if she made the sunshine list, did not check but Sue Sgambati is doing communications for South Simcoe Police.

SOWNY » CBC Gets $90 Million Funding Increase Despite Laying Off 800 People » March 1, 2024 11:52 am

If 1125 per employee works out to 90 million dollars then the CBC really is grossly over staffed.

SOWNY » Three Insiders On The State Of Canadian Radio » February 28, 2024 9:48 pm

I could not agree more.  I have always believed that local, entertaining and informative.  Throw in good music, not the 300 that everyone else is playing but great tunes.   Thought about this for many years but could never move forward.  I wish great success for this.   And of course the most important of all, no voice tracking.  Be live.

SOWNY » Bell Media Cuts 4,800 Jobs, Selling 45 Stations » February 8, 2024 12:50 pm

Someone just posted on the CFTO facebook page that it looks like the plug may have been pulled on W-5.

SOWNY » Bell Media Cuts 4,800 Jobs, Selling 45 Stations » February 8, 2024 10:28 am

So I am confused, although that is not difficult.   Sold 45 stations, let go 4800 people.  That is over 100 per station.  There is no way any of these stations had 100 people working at them, even with support (sales, accounting ect.).   Where are the rest of the people impacted from ?

SOWNY » Groundhog Day Tomorrow Feb 2nd. How Accurate Are These Rodents? » February 1, 2024 5:49 pm

=12pxJudging by how this winter is going, clearly its going to be an early spring.

Gee thanks markow 202, you just jinxed us.  Like saying "oh look the pitcher has a no hitter going."   Guess what happens next.

SOWNY » The Bills Are Alive With The Sound Of NFL, But Should You Mention It? » January 16, 2024 11:41 am

Was taught (at Humber College) not to ignore big events like the Bills game while on the air.   Instead right off the top and throughout the show promote immediate updates all evening long, as well as promoting what you had ahead.  And give the game updates.   Gives the listener the best of both worlds, and it really does show that you are live and on top of what is going on in your area.

SOWNY » Bell Adding 5:30 PM Edition Of CTV National News » November 1, 2023 11:47 am

I know a new weekend replacement for Sandi Rinaldo has not been announced but I would like to add my overpriced two cents worth.  I saw Heather Butts filling in last weekend or the weekend before and she was very good.  I got to know her while she was working in Barrie and followed her out east and then reporting for CTV.   I know she is quite young and has only been with the network for  short time but I have been very impressed.  She gets my vote.   In fact I would like to see her on the Mon.-Fri. anchor desk.  She is that good.

SOWNY » Local Radio Stations That Don't Exist Anymore » October 7, 2023 3:12 pm

Have not seen a mention yet of CKAN in Newmarket.  My home town, I applied while in College.  Heard nothing.  Got a job at another small market station and then a medium market TV station.  Finally got the rejection letter about 5 years later.  Had to laugh.

SOWNY » CFTO’s 11:30 PM weather » October 1, 2023 8:21 am

It cannot be a union jurisdiction think.  Back in the early 2000's CFTO ran a 3 or 4 minute long sports package from TSN inserted into their noon newscast using TSN anchors and shot from their studio.  I believed at the time that this would be the first step in doing something like this for their 6 and 11:30 shows but that never materialized.

SOWNY » Acoustic Brunch » July 28, 2023 11:25 am

So I was cruising to the golf course on Sunday late morning as I usually do and flipping around the dial trying to find something to listen to and I happened to hit B-101, the Corus station in Barrie.
They were playing a program they called the Acoustic Brunch.  It was quite enjoyable, as opposed to the same 100 songs played on most other stations.
What I found interesting was the diversity in the music they played.
Just a sample, but acoustic versions of hits from Sam Roberts, Bon Jovi, Collective Soul, The Cure, as well as New Girl Now by Honeymoon Suite, and What's Up by 4 Non Blondes.
Sadly no live announcer.  Would have been nice to get background info on these versions.  Were they actually on albums, or one off's.  Do the bands ever do these versions live in concert, ect.
What I am saying is I really enjoyed the program.
Not sure if this plays on any other Corus stations across Canada, but check it out for something completely different.

SOWNY » Is Alan Cross A Free Agent Or A Corus Employee? » July 28, 2023 10:00 am

My only beef is the title of "musicologist."   What is a musicologist exactly?  Is there a post secondary course that must be completed and test passed ?  Do you have to complete an internship ?   If Alan Cross is a musicologist, what about John Donabie, David Marsden, old friend Ivar Hamilton, and so many others ?

SOWNY » Rogers TV buyouts » July 10, 2023 12:20 pm

A friend of mine works for the Rogers TV community channel here in our area.
He told me that he and all other full time employees working the station have been offered voluntary buyouts, and they were very generous.   He has been there more than 20 years and the offer was for 2 years salary.   In most cases it is one year and you have to fight like hell to get more, but anyway.
I wonder if this is the first sign that the Rogers community channels will soon disappear.

SOWNY » A new drinking game watching the Blue Jays » June 25, 2023 6:09 pm

I tried to do my own version of the Jays drinking game.  Every time Buck responds to a comment from Shulman or Wagner with "Ya..." take a shot.  You will be zombie like by the third inning.  Just having fun though, love Buck with whoever he is working with.

SOWNY » Want To Win A Bar Bet? Check Out This TV Disaster » April 14, 2023 3:44 pm

OK, this might sound a little weird, or perhaps oldtimers is kicking in, but wasn't Rolf Benirshchke a former NFL field goal kicker ?  The name sounds quite familiar, and I think in context to the NFL.

SOWNY » How Many Spots is Too Many Spots? » February 16, 2023 4:52 pm

So I don't want to come across an an old cranky fart who always says I remember when....but I am so here goes.
I alway thought that back in the 70's and 80's in top 40 format it was a great during a break to have the jock actually read a live spot.  Breaks up the cluster and seemed to make it all more a part of the show, as opposed to overly produced repetitive spots.
Of course that might be difficult now with so many shows voice tracked, and many of todays untalented announcers unable to actually read a 15 or 30 live.

SOWNY » TV News: To Tease Or Not To Tease? That Is The Question » January 22, 2023 5:19 pm

Speaking of teases, while working for a CTV station, the Executive Producer had a simple formula for writing.
It was simple.."make a statement, and then make a promise."
For example, "..snow is on the way tonight.   Coming up, we will tell you how much in your area, and when."
This formula is still used quite frequently, and although it might be effective, it certainly gets very repetitive.

SOWNY » TV News: To Tease Or Not To Tease? That Is The Question » January 22, 2023 2:59 pm

I have noticed lately that on many nights CFTO actually leads with what is in essence a promo for a later story.
Intro rolls, video rolls, and anchor begins reading a 15 second or so voice over, ending with.."we will have that for you in just a minute..but first....
At that point intro their first full story.
Is this done intentionally, or perhaps the story they are teasing is not ready yet.  I am not sure.

SOWNY » The Story Behind Johnny Bower's "Honky The Christmas Goose" » December 23, 2022 10:21 am

So I was the MC at a golf tournament years ago, and Johnny Bower was one of the special guests.  After the round and prior to dinner I was doing my thing at the mic and was told that dinner would delayed.
Had to fill time and was interviewing Johnny so I asked him about the song.   Then I asked him if we could sing it.  Johnny was great, he agreed.  Luckily, and I don't know why but I knew all the words.  So that is one of the hilites of my career, singing Honky the Christmas Goose with one of the greatest Leafs of all time.   Actually have about 15 seconds of video of it somewhere.
BTW, Johnny was great.

SOWNY » Radio Hirings: "We Won't Get Back To You" » December 6, 2022 7:11 pm

My story on rejection letter.  I applied to a small market radio station while I was in college.  Of course never heard back.  Left school and got a job at a small market TV station.  After about a year moved to a medium market TV station, and about a year after that got the letter.  At least they finally got back to me.  The think is my career had far surpassed the original station I applied to.  Laughed out loud, and yes I kept the letter and still have it.  Things worked out much better for me because they did not offer me a job.  Thank you CKAN.

SOWNY » Why Does All The News Coverage Of The Jacob Hoggard Trial Do This? » October 21, 2022 8:37 am

Just spit ballin here but if they used the audio would the stations not have to pay to use it.  A payment to SOCAN or what ever the organization for Canadian musicians is.

SOWNY » Politically Incorrect Songs » September 6, 2022 6:13 pm

A friend recently saw Ringo Starr live, and he did not do one of his biggest hits Your 16.   We both wondered if this was because it might be considered politically Incorrect for a singer in his 80's singing about a teenager.   I certainly hope not.  Thoughts ?

SOWNY » Poll Question: Will John Derringer be on the air tomorrow morning? » May 25, 2022 8:23 pm

=12pxHe was allowed to keep working and made millions.  He's almost retirement age so it's not like this is gonna ruin him.  He'll still sit court-side at the Raptors games and drive a really nice car and probably keep getting freebies.

I totally disagree.  Companies and organizations will run and hide.  All will collapse around him and no one will go near him.   It is over.  He is now toxic.

SOWNY » Critics Lament Ben Wagner Staying Home For Jays' Away Games On Radio » April 12, 2022 6:20 pm

This is so very sad and just another example of to hell with a quality informative product just to save some money.   If Wagner was on the road, he would have access to the players pre and post game.  A chance to gather information that could be passed on to listener during the broadcast.  If there is an injury and a new player called up he could get access during BP or post game.   And with just one person in the booth there is no chance to discuss games, players, moves.   We are getting the Coles Notes version of our Major League Baseball team on radio.  This is really cheeseball.

I will start with I am useless with technology but is anyone else having trouble with Twitter.
I always go to GTA Update on this site, click on one of the posts and it takes me right to Twitter.  From there I click on Home and it goes to all of the people or groups I follow.
Since yesterday the Twitter page just comes up blank with the Twitter logo only.
Help.    Any suggestions

SOWNY » When Jungle Jay Was Still On WKBW-TV Before CHUM » December 10, 2021 12:50 pm

A story I read somewhere was that when CHUM was looking for a new morning person at the time, it apparently came down to 2 candidates.  Jungle Jay who got the job, and the other was Irene Ryan who played Granny on the Beverly Hillbillies.   Oh how things would have been different.   I always wondered about this story because at the time there were no women in prominent on air positions like AM drive on major market stations.   Can anyone here on the Big Yellow Board confirm or deny this story.

SOWNY » GNR640 Runs Out Of Replacements » August 18, 2021 9:25 pm

So it is not only Alexx Pierson being re-run during the vacations.  Tonight on their regular Employment Law show which is bought time, it was a rerun as well from a few weeks earlier this summer.

SOWNY » GNR640 Runs Out Of Replacements » August 17, 2021 10:46 pm

Don't want to sound like an old geezer here but back in my time vacation requests would be submitted and if the shifts could be filled in your absence, all was good.  If others had requested the same time off and there were not enough people to fill shifts, you were S-O-L.   If a couple of different people wanted the same week off it came down to seniority.   What was most important was making sure all of the shifts were filled.  Obviously this is not what is important at GNR 640.   A wise man once told me if you lose them in the summer it is tough to get them back in the fall.
