'Ditto". As a young teen in Montreal, WLS was one of many US based stations that played rock n roll when the local airwaves turned to Joe Pyne. Thought I'd lost Dick Biondi when he departed WKBW.. Pleasantly surprised when he showed up on WLS in 1960.

I remember his rants against the ‘midget’ Doug Flutie in favour of the ‘surfer dude’ Rob Johnson. He got his fair share of Ontario callers during afternoon drive on WGR. Not quite as cerebral as Bob McCown.

You don't have to travel far in the UK to find an interesting and musically diverse station. " 88 to 91", BBC Radio 2 plays all genres of popular music, with interesting presenters, during a normal week,

I remember being in the UK and in Ireland in 1965. Luxembourg and the 'Pirates' were the only source of Top 40. My memory is that Radio Luxembourg didn't play the full songs, only a portion. Wonder if it was a 'royalties' issue or were they just trying to stop folks recording off the broadcast.

There is an Aircheck on Marc Denis' CKGM Tribute page. Click on '70s Alumni and on the left hand side you will see 'Mark Burns 1976'. To my untrained ear it could be te same voice heard on CHQM in 1993.

While not technically in the same market, didn’t J Michael Wilson host weekend mornings on Buffalo’s WGR, while he also hosted swing shifts on Toronto’s CKFH, in the early ‘70s?
Dale Patterson would know.

I remember visiting a Zellers (or maybe it was Kresge’s) in 1960 or so in Montreal. In their ‘record section’, there was usually a Survey Chart. It wasn’t from a local radio station and it wasn’t Billboard or Cashbox. It was Canadian. Does anyone else remember the chart?

BBC Radio 2 is music based and personality driven. Consistently one of  the most popular stations in the UK.. I believe that it evolved from the 'Light Service' when the UK allowed commercial broadcasters. Interesting hosts and an eclectic mix of popular music.

At the risk of seeming to be 'all about the money', I'm curious as to the salaries that GTA Top 40 stations paid their talent in the late 60s and 70s. I started a full time sales job in 1972 for $9600. a year. Plant Managers made $20,000 or so. Outside of Wally Crouter and Jay Nelson, what did the air talent of the day earn?

The conclusion that I’ve come to is that ‘someone’ should invest in a Quality Control step at the end of the production process. It’s only a three hour show, once a week. Couldn’t be that expensive to get it right.

I agree with RA and Dale that the relative youth of the show’s producer is probably the main reason.  Remember when Roger presold ‘A World Without Love’ by Peter and Gordon and then they played the Bobby Rydell version?
The real question may be ‘Why do record companies allow their compilation cds to be contaminated with alternate versions and outtakes?’

Lived in BC during the 80s. Some of the CFUN Good Guys were still 'playing the hits' then.
Great to see so many of them made it to the White Spot for the reunion..
Noticed that Dave Boxer (Montreal CKGM and CFCF) was listed as attending. I have great memories of him from my youth in Montreal.
Wonder if the Good Guy sweatshirt is available for sale?

Here's an article on KHJ's 'Big Kahuna' (Chris Varez)The Big Kahuna The Big Kahuna died on Sunday. For us kids who grew up in LA in the 60s, so did another sweet part of our youth. The Big Kahuna was really Chris Varez, 69, who played a larger-than-life character that was still not as large as he was in real life.

From my book about growing up in the 60s:

1966 was the “Summer of the Big Kahuna” – KHJ’s most creative and ambitious promotion yet. They created this mythical character, “The Big Kahuna” who legend had it had lost his precious stone in Los Angeles and was coming to find it. Along the way he’d be making personal appearances, giving away money, and be the centerpiece for several contests including a new car giveaway and a luau.

With great fanfare the Big Kahuna arrived at LAX. He was this large Hawaiian aborigine adorned in fur and beads and shells and feathers. In truth he was a crazy German whose father built the bunker Hitler died in.

[color=#000099]LA kids went along with the conceit. We flocked to the Big Kahuna’s appearances. God knows what he was smoking in the back of the KHJ prize van at high schools but the Big Kahuna became a local sensation. We followed his exploits on the air, saw him when we could, hoped he’d give us free money and maybe a hit off those funny cigarettes, and scrambled to be the 9th caller when we heard the “Kahuna cockatoo”. Winners were entitled to attend the big beach luau, and here’s how different things were t

Dale Patterson's most recent aircheck on the Scrapbook is of Dean Hagopian. The notes include a mention that Hagopian 'guested' on CHUM in 1968. My recollection is that CHUM ran a promotion over the weeks leading up to Jack Armstrong's debut as the evening jock. Each Sunday night, for four consecutive Sundays, a 'guest' deejay would host. The final candidate and winner was Jack Armstrong. In addition to Hagopian, I recall Terry David Mulligan 'auditioning', but neither Dale nor I can remember who the fourth candidate was. Any ideas out there?

Back in the very early '60s, my friends and I used to write to various stations requesting copies of their charts. Most responded positively. I did a bit of 'fake news' creating a WBZ Boston chart (they didn't publish one) that fooled all my friends. Think I had Carole King's "It might As Well Rain Until September" at #1. Highest listing for that song in North America
Great memories. Thnx to RadioActive
