I'm guessing CING is now coming from the new CHCH tower.  Does anyone know if the signal is at full power yet?  It doesn't seem as strong as it use to be in Etobicoke.  It would be a loss if this is their new full power signal, as it use to come into Toronto very strong.

You're not paying for them.

I disagree on the "NOT PAYING FOR THEM"  You do via the package price.    In Today's world sadly, most people want only what they want.  With lack of competition, tv providers try to justify the price increase/levels by the amount you get, but sadly, if you don't speak french, these channels are ZERO value and should be an optional add on  outside Quebec and French speaking areas.   I get where "cash" is coming from on this.   In 2023 you should be able to get an extremely local only basic package (which skinny is not fully) and pick past that what you want.  Sadly unless forced, it never happens or they try and change huge monthly fees on single channels to make them way less attractive.   This just makes cord cutters cut more!

Interesting point about the updates. My Rogers Ignite TV service has not updated at all since I switched from Legacy to Ignite...that's not to say it won't update, it's just amazing that there have not been any updates...by now.

Ignite does update fairly regular..   It's the firmware and most times it happens overnight and you would never notice when it happens.   They are not changing much on what you see.. but background items change... added apps etc.

I won't lie.. I'm shocked.   With the amount of effort they have been doing to try and get Z1035 into Toronto proper, this could have been a possibility to fill in the hole in downtown that their current signal has.   I can only assume that costs to keep it operational along with the huge possibility of the CRTC calling them to a hearing over it, likely outweighed the benefit.    103.9 being so close to 103.5 also can't be used by anyone else without Evanov signing off on it.    Sad state of the business currently... I sadly don't think this is the end of these moves yet.   I do wonder if Elmnt FM is next in Toronto and Ottawa, unless some major change happens..

I think you are really over thinking this.   CityNews 680 actually does do NEWS live, Traffic reports live, etc.  News stories most days are pre-recorded on any news station, and under your logic they should have those done live 24-7 as well?  With Newscasts and traffic being live around the clock... pardon me if I ignore sports reports and business not having a human in the seat 24/7.   The fact they have a radio newsroom staffed is more than any others alone.   The fact they are hosting on air live news coverage and traffic reports 24/7... that should be commended and is true to what matters.   Live 24-7 is in fact true even if a few reports get recorded during an hour.

I don't doubt your sources, but their release caused more questions than answers and does make it sound like they could very well try to keep both signals on the air, just run them as one station.  If not, I would expect more direct wording of shutting down 103.9, which they are safe to not make any mention of.    As they are required to cover Orangeville news and info with 103.5.. they do also cover Toronto... so technically I think it would adhere to requirements there on both signals for local content.

Only Evanov's management and owners know their true plans.... but I wouldn't be shocked Sept 1st either way.

The release from Evanov is a bit confusing.  It either means what you mentioned Saul, that 103.9 will be a rebroadcaster of Z1035, or they are closing Proud FM and incorporating some talent and features from Proud on 103.5.

Based on the wording of their release... I'm willing to put some money down that the plan is to bring over the 2 in house hosts to Z1035 to be able to say they still cover some LGBTQ+ content, and "integrate" 103.9 and 103.5 together as one station.   Translation: running the same audio on both signals.      Sept 1st we will see, but I won't be surprised if 103.9 remains on air just rebroadcasting instead.    It may have taken them a few years, but the accusations of Z103.5  "sneaking in the back door to Toronto" may just be coming true.

This article shows which ones they are and how they've survived the FM surge.

I think though the story of how is the market able to support News, News/Talk and Sports based formats. Most have heritage in those formats.   Some also have added FM signals to transition over.   AM playing music, in smaller markets, or in markets that already over served with talk based formats will not be as HUGE for billings.   I also remind you, this is TODAY and not where we are going quickly.  5 years from now, I think these numbers will be much lower if they only have AM as their only signal.   Transitioning now will protect these stations, which is why we see FM's being added to WINS, KNX, etc.    I think over time we will see Canadian owners protecting their crown jewel AM's by adding an FM where possible.   I just hope they don't wait until the damage is done and they can't turn the downward push around.

It’s the best it can be without reducing the quality of the main classical signal, which would be a really bad idea.

There is a reason for this...   It's the source feeding the HD2 at first Canadian Place mostly.   Could be processing, but it seems like the audio feed is more the issue than the HD signal itself causing it.

I get why they are doing what they are.

AM HD requires the site to be tuned to allow for it.   Sadly it's a CBC site that is old and the cost would be outside the benefit likely at this time.

96.7 is a very weak signal, and only covers downtown.

96.3's HD2 covers a much broader area, and more cost effective to get on there.   To be honestly, if you have HD in your car, not sure why you wouldn't listen here by default for Zoomer Radio.

A station I don't understand that has dropped their HD signal is Elmnt FM.   Since they dropped it, the country station in Buffalo has their HD takes over randomly when it grabs the HD signal from there, dropping Elmnt's analog.   In the west end especially, 106.5 becomes hard to lock in because of this, unless you turn HD off on your car.  If it's some weird cost cutting measure, they may want to re-think if they want to cover the west with anything useful.

If Evanov buys it.. doubtful they will just re-broadcast 530.    Both Hamilton frequencies are 50,000 and blast into Toronto, so there is opportunity if a religious or brokered multi-cultural wanted to air their shows that target the whole area.  CHCH I can't see buying either for the simple fact CHML exists.   1150 or 820 trying to offer a news talk format just doesn't make sense for the Hamilton market.

I also can't see them keeping Windsor as a music format.  You are up against Detroit radio there... and as a stand alone AM, you are not going to make it work in 2023.   Multi-cultural could work very well if you target Windsor and Detroit.    And before anyone says it.. 1220 St Catharines isn't showing any profit yet... and I think they have a huge battle ahead of them as a music station on it's own. Not sure any one buying Windsor or Hamilton would take that risk.

I bet you multi-cultural will be on 820 or 1150.   I also can see this done in Windsor as a stand alone.    Multicultural or Religion are two formats that could work on AM and make money as stand alone operations or AM only.    Oakville is a great example of this.

Automation is only as good as the people controlling it.  There also may have been something bigger going on.   John Moore's interviews may have been a backup that kicked in after silence of 60 sec. (most stations have this in play).   This would have set off alarms to engineers and programming who may have jumped in and put on a feed from ESPN Radio (as it would be already available to them from TSN).   This would have immediately cut off backup audio.   Once they got things back in order, they likely tried to make up some local spots missed due to the issue, which is more important than programming sadly to avoid makegoods in 2023 and then once that finished it got back to where it should be jumping in to CTV NEWS.   Everything that happened there for sure would not have been just automation.  It screams of someone jumped in with a panic once alarms started going off.    As for 1150, as they have ZERO staff locally looking after the station, I'm guessing no one has listened/reported the issue.   Based on the ratings, no one is listening either.   It's 100% due to misconfigured switcher commands.

Again... Automation is only as good as the people controlling it.

I noticed this as well... along with some audio processing adjustments.   I'm not sure if they dropped HD for ever, or they are not done getting things setup.   Based on when the switch happened, and some audio level issues still existing, (Over the weekend, they are much quieter than other stations on the dial, which is not normal as they normally are on par)  I'm thinking they put an effort to get KLOVE's main audio on the air, and will address extras in the near future.   EMF isn't against HD as they have history of using it in many other markets. I also wonder if there was some transmitter adjustments made that could have lead to a better "STEREO" lock in Toronto, as I have never experienced analog issues on a HD enabled station.   I have experienced HD lock though from distant stations, so perhaps they could be leaving it off to better serve Toronto?    Only their engineers know/time will tell.

There would be few other options as AM 980 is host broadcaster to the London Knights

As AM980 had the Leafs before...  I bet you they will be happy to take them back.   There will be conflict with London Knights, but spill over could happen on one of their FM's... perhaps the country?  I just can't see Bell fighting to keep Leafs to air on Virgin or their Pure Country brands that perform well on their own.   Corus on the other hand could afford to give some time on their country to Leafs if their is conflict with the Knights.

This video was recorded from Star before the simulcast started.

I've had a listen for a bit today after they flipped over...   It's still basically a Top40/CHR but perhaps a little bit more dayparting, playing more a ADULT CHR during the day, and more mainstream CHR at night.   They do have some confused messaging going on with "TODAY'S BEST MUSIC" "HOME FOR MUSIC AND FUN" "HIT MUSIC" all going on at once.     They seem to have dropped the "Buffalo's #1 HIT music Station"   I do wonder if they will clean that up once things settle a bit.    Really should be a strong message and stick with it, as they mostly have under the BUFFALO's #1 HIT MUSIC STATION.     I also think they shouldn't stray too far from CHR, as it will welcome someone else to try it.   If they stay where they are musically, they likely can take the younger side of 102.5's audience and keep 98.5's current without issue.   I do think their focus on AT WORK may be a bit off brand for Kiss.   I could be wrong..   If you try to be too broad.,  you don't make anyone happy.

With 96.1 becoming STAR 96.1, and musically being more mainstream modern AC doing 90's to Now, I think the market actually is in a better place for the future.   Soft AC wasn't really performing in the ratings there...    This should actually help them a lot  by grabing audience from STAR's mid-older demo, and actually balance things out better within the market of it's size.  STAR 96.1 should be focused on at work listening which it seems they are...  That is right in their lane.

We will see... it's been a while since this much change happened in Buffalo's market.

Toronto is a bad example because of the way it's setup for rental on FCP, but normal cases, you can add HD to an existing plant for much less on FM than you can on AM.    I do know the CN tower is going through an upgrade and not sure how they will handle HD via their existing tenants and the new master antenna system.   The point of the upgrade on top of getting equipment modernized, is to allow stations on the CN tower add HD if they want.   I'm willing to bet we see most jump on board. 99.9 only has HD because they are using their own antenna and space left from CFTO analog on the CN Tower.   I also wonder if most on FCP have been able to make deals because majority on FCP are in HD, some with 4 HD signals.

There is many issues with how HD is done, the lack of effort by the industry to improve things also is an issue.

I will not talk about home based radios, because most people are moving to streaming for that use.   Smart speakers, etc. are the home radios for a lot of people now.   HD should be made available on low cost clock radios and other home devices..  Sadly home HD radios are way over priced which will not make anyone care about it, so streaming may be the best case for most homes.    Stats show homes are moving this way and have been for a while.

For in the car, I think radio still has life left over streaming.       The major issue is how it's being setup on radios.    The easiest way is putting HD for the station you are broadcasting on the main signal.   For 1010 for example, it really should live on 1010 am.    It would then flip to HD automatically if your radio has the feature.   It's easy.... and the user has to do very little to know how to work it.    Sadly most AM sites are not ready to go for HD and require investment which owners don't want to make.    FM on the other hand is fairly easy to setup to be HD ready, with limited upfront costs involved for most stations.  This is why most owners have put their AM's on their HD2-3-4 of their FM stations.   This is where the issue is.     Without promotion, no one knows/cares about these because of what you have to do to get to them on your radio.   For 1010, you have to go to 99.9 FM... wait for the HD to come on, then go to HD2.     Trying to explain that to a listener is way to complicated for something they get with zero effort at AM1010.

The way it could be fixed is working with the manufacture of HD.   Develop a way to operate like digital tv does, with virtual channels.    This way 99.9 fm hd 2, would be connected to AM1010.   So when you dial up AM 1010, your radio could automatically connect to 99.9 HD2.        They also could allow radios to show
