If you've ever tuned around an HD radio in your car, you'll notice it right away:
680 News and the Fan 590 are both on CKIS-FM Toronto.
1010 CFRB can be heard on CKFM, Toronto.
AM740 is piggybacked on CFMZ, aka Classical 96.3, also in Toronto.
And Corus' AM640? If you want to find it, you'll have to tune in CING-FM, a station from Hamilton.
My question: why is Corus the only one to use its more distant Hamilton station to carry its T.O. talker? They have Q107 and CFNY. Why did they farm it out to a town farther away? I've noted before 640's HD station occasionally nulls out in several areas of the city, and I can only attribute that to where the signal is being sent from.
Anyone know why they didn't situate this on their Toronto stations like everyone else? It usually comes in just fine, but I find it odd.

I think, They neaded to apply to the CRTC to get HD radio.
So, I don't CFNY or CILQ were Hd capible because of the old CN tower Antenna.
But, Corus should Apply to the CRTC to make CFNY or CILQ Hd capible.

This is correct, The CN tower wasn't able to accommodate it. It can now, but Corus isn't going to spend any money they don't have to.

Because, Unlike broadcasting companies in the UK, Canadian and american broadcasters don't cair about quolity programming and making good use of digital radio.
On worldradiomap, when you click the link radio stations in buffalo ny, only wdcx, wlkk, wned and wbfo have differant content other than AM stations on HD radio.
Canada should have stuck with DAB.

Also because, Canadian and american companies only beleav in streaming the AM signels, Not making use of a cleer fm radio signal for HD radio.
By the way, CKIS's HD signal sumtimes cuts out in Scarborough, But I can get CING like a local.
Strange right?

CING is significantly higher power, and CKIS is weak to the east of the city, in order to protect WBEE.

At the time Corus launched HD, the CN tower which CFNY and CILQ are on, the CN tower was not able to do HD without installing your own antenna (as CKFM did)
I'm also thinking CING had newer equipment at their transmitter site, which allowed HD to be installed easier/cheaper. With the move of CING to the new CHCH tower, the signal is not as strong as it once was in parts of Toronto. The CN Tower is now able to transmit HD on the master FM antenna. It's just a matter of time before Corus upgrades their equipment up there, and I suspect 640 will move over to CFNY or CILQ signals. To be clear... Corus is the only major commercial broadcaster NOT to be on HD at the CN tower now... It's just a matter of time before that changes.

But, How could I always get CING like a local in Scarborough?
But when I go to visit family in the queen street east area, I cant get it at all.
Even when they swiched to the CHCH tower, the signal still comes in here in Scarborough.
I'm in the Midland and Kingston road area near the bluffs.

Speaking of Corus radio, they have announced this morning that CKNW is officially moving from 980 AM to 730 AM on February 24. CKNW is currently being simulcast on both 730 and 980.

According to Broadcast Dialogue, the official swap takes place Feb. 24th, while the Daily Hive reports the 980 signal will loop in listeners where to tune to keep hearing the station until sometime in mid-March, when presumably 980 will go silent for good.
Considering the station was #1 in recent ratings, this is a significant change in the market, even if it has been going on for a while.

Simple - when you're downtown, the very strong signals from the CN Tower and First Canadian Place overload the front end of your radio. Anything that's not coming from those two sites receives interference, and that includes CING.
Out in Scarborough, you're not as close to CN/FCP, so the signals reaching you from those sites don't overload your radio and CING can come through better.

Somewhat interesting - both signals are in the ratings separately and 730's getting about a third of the tuning already.

I can also get CKLH and CHKX.
CHKX comes in cleerer than CJKX on my HD radio, even with the antenna not pointed the right direction.
