SOWNY » New "All Star" Canadian Group Brings Old 70s CanCon Back To Life » October 29, 2023 11:33 am |
For the most part these cover versions are true to the originals. What's really interesting is the choice of songs here. Chester's Make My Life A Little Bit Brighter is a great example. It was a classic Cancon turntable hit. I don't know how many copies were sold, but I do know it was a song that was played an awful lot in the early days of Cancon regulation. Bim's Can't Catch Me is another example. Bim is Roy Forbes and he subsequently recorded under that name. The reason it was such a hit was its length (it's not a bad tune but...). It was 2 minutes long, the perfect Cancon filler.
This album shows us something else. In the early days, Cancon was scoffed at by radio. The songs and production were generally considered inferior, yet they obviously are fondly remembered by the band. I have long felt that musicians view music very differently than their audiences. They appreciate music and don't judge it the same way as mere mortals. These songs clearly made an impact on the band members. Kudos! It's actually a pretty good listen, and you have to love the K-Tel packaging!

Jim had the gift of the gab, a true Irishman and a true gentleman. I worked with him in London and at Seneca and always enjoyed his company...and his stories!

Spinning Wheel is right when he says it should be called Talk Opinion 1010. Nothing new there, that ship sailed long ago...and as for AMFM's question, is talk radio on the decline? Emphatically no. Just look at the CBC numbers. What's on the decline is the AM band and the notion of appointment listening.

@Radiowiz I disagree. The only way to win is to go FM
SOWNY » Mike Bendixen Back In T.O. Radio & You'll Never Believe Where » September 5, 2023 8:57 am |
Bendixen is a smart guy. I know what concerns he has had about the Talk format on FM but I think if it's true that Corus will find or flip an FM signal to Talk, he'll make it work.

As mentioned by Ale Not this is an MLB thing. I'm amused by how entitled everyone seems to be about seeing EVERY game for free. There was a time when we were lucky to get a game a week, now every game is available and people get hissy when heaven forbid they have to pay for it. Get used to it folks. Streaming is the future, it won't be free, so get used to it.

SOWNY » Dave Agar Hounds Fox » March 17, 2023 1:45 pm |
21% is actually pretty good considering most Fox viewers watch only right wing content, and none of them are reporting on this, for good reason. If they tell their audience what's going on, they might start doing dangerous things. Like thinking.

I agree with Paterson1. The difference in the reactions is either sexist or political because to my ear the similarities are obvious.
SOWNY » Dave Agar Hounds Fox » March 5, 2023 8:54 pm |
Dave Agar is a newsman, a legendary one. It's my belief that all newsmen are watching this case with interest as there is so much at stake, and it's not just money. I'm not a lawyer so my theory may not hold water, but I believe Fox has not agreed on a settlement for a very simple reason. Dominion Voting Machines are quite likely to demand that Fox air any apology that is agreed upon , most likely for an extended period of time. Fox is more likely to take their chances on the legal case than admit to any wrongdoing on air. Why? Because such an admission would probably cost them a lot more than whatever judgement is made against them.

SOWNY » Has Anyone Officially Replaced John Derringer On Q107? » January 28, 2023 8:39 pm |
The irony of the misogynist-in-chief being replaced by a woman and having her work with the two enablers left behind is something to reflect on. Why would Corus do this? To somehow try to appeal to women? If so, why keep Parker and Garbutt? Far more likely they couldn't find another morning show they liked.
SOWNY » Mark Burns? » January 16, 2023 7:04 pm |
I worked with Mark Burns at CFTR but I can't confirm the date. I thought it was '73 but could have been sometime late in'74. He did go the CJFM in Montreal and I don't know where he went after. I don't think it's the 'QM Mark Burns as the voice sounds different
SOWNY » Q107 Calgary Is Flipping » January 10, 2023 7:24 pm |
The CRTC is like the old grey mare...she ain't what she used to be. One of the issues with all the conglomerates owning all of the stations in all of the markets is they now have the power. You want a station in say, Fredericton? Well then you have to bend somewhere else. CRTC has been toothless for a very long time.
SOWNY » Q107 Calgary Is Flipping » January 8, 2023 7:54 pm |
They're going to simulcast AM and FM and see if the CRTC allows it...if they do, watch for that to happen elsewhere.

I'm sorry but I don't understand "her paycheque is no longer directly controlled by Trudeau." Does that mean the City of Toronto workers paycheques are controlled by John Tory? Or that, heaven forbid, the OPP paycheques are indirectly controlled by Doug Ford? To be fair, I don't think Vassy had any hesitation in calling out Liberal dishonesty and missteps. I actually, with my own eyes, saw her do that on multiple occasions. Maybe show her a little respect.
