It wasn't that long ago that if you wanted to work in major radio news it was either CHML, CFRB or CBC.

What an amazing amount of talent in that publication. I feel honoured to have worked with many of them.

From the Stoney Creek News  June 21.2012

By Laura Lennie, News Staff

In his more than 60-year broadcast career, Warren Beck has been an operator, cameraman, anchor, reporter, director and instructor.

The Stoney Creek resident has also served on industry associations and boards.
“I can’t recall ever not wanting to go to work on a certain day – some days you wished to hell you hadn’t gone to work – but I’ve never had a day where I’ve been reluctant to walk in and start working,” said Beck, 78. “I think that’s pretty remarkable that you can say that, after being so long working in the business.”

Beck began his broadcasting career in 1950 in his hometown, St. Thomas, Ont., where he was an operator at CHLO.

In 1954, he came to Hamilton, where he worked as an operator at CHML until 1962.
“While I was there, I also volunteered in the newsroom; I wanted to feel around and see what it was like,” Beck said. “They had a great news director, Don Johnston, and he let me come in and just observe. I don’t think I wrote any stories, but I observed and I liked it.”
Beck wanted to gain more news experience and got a gig as a newscaster at CJOY in Guelph.

“We only had a staff of three, so you were able to do a bit of everything, it was a great experience,” Beck said. “I worked with news and sports director Norm Jary. I gained a lot of experience through him and that’s how I got started in news.”

Beck later took a job as an anchor for a television station in Indiana. But he quickly returned home when he was offered a position as a general reporter at CHML.

“I covered everything – city council, committee meetings, boards of education and politics,” Beck said. “I started specializing in labour and I liked it, so I ended up being a labour reporter. I was appointed assistant news director in 1970.”

Beck held the position for two years.

He was promoted to news director after Johnston was hired as a news directo

I had just walked out of the bank when all the lights went off. I switched on CHML and they were off the air.  Then went to 680 News and found out about the big blackout which lasted until about 7 am the the next day if I recall correctly. I remember who bright the stars were that night with no artificial light to dull them.

If someone like Zoomer Radio purchased CHAM they would get a super strong signal that reaches north and west and could set up a southern Ontario-wide network aimed at folks who still listen to radio.

Just a thought.

Nobody would want them anyway. It wouldn't have any effect.

I disagree.  Someone with vision and aiming at an older audience might make those signals work for them as part of a bigger operation. But that would be competition!

Wonder if the CRTC will force companies like Bell Media to hand back licenses for stations with strong signals like CKOC and CHAM which appear wasted with their current formats, possibly to avoid competition.

I interviewed Ballard in the early '80s when the Leafs moved their farm team to St. Catharines. He and King Clancy did a stand up routine at the news conference/announcement.  I can see why Ballard changed and not in a good way, after King died.  A good read on all this is Pal Hal, an uninhibited, no holds barred account of the life and times of Harold Ballard, by Dick Beddoes.

Sad thing is the Leafs were not a bad team in the mid '70s if only the owner would have let his GM run the team and stayed out of it.

Two other one-time broadcasters weren't so lucky. Former mayor and longtime radio host Bob Bratina came in a distant third, losing to Andrea Horwath in the race for mayor of Hamilton.

And one-time CFTO reporter Karlene Nation (and ex-Sauga 960 host) finished a distant sixth in Spadina-Fort York.

Bratina has had a good run at elected office and went out on his own terms

Sign of the times.

Years ago I was watching CHCH News at 6 pm and they got their word graphics mixed up between a car crash in Thorold and the Bosnian civil war

The newscaster was talking about the civil war while an image of a car crashed into a tree appeared and then they talked about the car crash while an image of a tank rolling down a street with the caption 'Thorold last night'
