I'm not going to dispute what you say, necessarily, but I'd rather hear whatever vitriol comes in from a live person than a pre-programmed robot. At least they can be argued with.

And then there's this: if the talk show host can be A.I., how long before the "callers" are, too?

Soon we'll have radio stations that only robots listen to.

Maybe the AI would change the topics of talk radio more often and  talk radio would rise from the ashes , If I hear the term Carbon Tax one more time . Apparently human hosts and programmers are not .

What amazes me is one would think ratings would rule the indicator  if a host or show is working or not. Apparently this is not true  a show can be tanking and there is no change, ratings suck then everyone shouts "radio is dead " NO substandard radio should be killed. I run my own biz and if a team member is not performing up to spec  its goodbye . It's a simple concept.

It's the future of broadcasting, well future? Sky in UK has a lot more choices within the broadcast than Canada can dream of .   With the customizable new multiview experience in the Apple TV app on Apple TV 4K, users can see up to four games at once on the screen including Major League Soccer matches, Major League Baseball “Friday Night Baseball” games, and live studio shows “MLS 360” and “MLB Big Inning.

I love the Oakley show as it steps away from the misery radio format that talk radio in Toronto has become . Talk radio should not only be informative but entertaining. It has forgotten the entertaining part. So that "jokey" bit personally is much more attractive than  constant banging on about Toronto's problems and what a jerk Trudeau is .

I recently shared my disappointment ( mildly understated )regarding the quality of talk radio in Toronto . However, I was pleasantly surprised when I tuned into AM 640 during the Oakley show and heard genuine laughter and conversation between real people. I double-checked to make sure it was AM 640 Toronto, and it was! Since then, I have been listening regularly.

I have heard Oakley's show before and found his topics to be entertaining and refreshing compared to the usual political discussions that dominate Toronto radio. I believe that some credit goes to ex-Alex Pierson, Mike Downey who began as a sound operator and worked his way up to a producer. He knows how to go against the grain and read the audience, and John Oakley has the experience and talent to make it all work. Finally, someone has broken the mould.

I would like to give a standing ovation to the Oakley and Downey team.

The number of panels is one thing; it's an age-old piece of programming that can work. The GTA panellists are all the same political wonks in one form or another, with few exceptions. The topics are usually so dry and precisely different from what the average person talks about daily. I rarely sit down in a pub and discuss Toronto City Council budget details, quoting city councillors by name. If I had friends that did, I would hit them over the head with a slightly used golf club. There are no ordinary people on these panels that the average person relates to.

When I hang out with my friends, we laugh, and there is fun, something missing; who wants to listen to doom and gloom? There is an interchange with my friends which needs to be improved on the radio rather than each person covering their talking point.

Nobody on a panel will change a listener's views, so lighten up. I can call my ex-wife or accountant if I want doom and gloom.

I don't get it, the ex-boss of 1010, whose ratings are less than a 2, wants to make 640 into a carbon copy of 1010. Why nor clone 680 or CBC which have great ratings OR do something innovative ? Something different?

Then they wonder why the ratings suck .

Please, please talk show hosts saying the same thing day after day.  "We have a busy show today" or "A lot is happening on the show today."
This only works if you come on the air one day and say, "Hey, we have a slow day today with very few topics of note."

Nice Video!!!  On October 10, 1995, at 10 p.m., the station changed to a full-time talk format.[6][7] As Talk 640, the station aired syndicated shows such as Joy Browne, Rhona Raskin, Dr. Laura and Live Audio Wrestling, along with local programming hosted by personalities such as Gene ValaitisJane HawtinBill Carroll, Shelley Klinck, Marsha Lederman, Karen Horsman, Michael CorenDave Chalk, Spaceman Gary Bell and Roger Kelly. It was then MOJO for awhile then in 2004 changed to current format. 1010 was getting a round an 8 in 2004, thats 4 times what it has now .

So we compare TV to radio ? And when 1010 had an 8 and 9 share, 640 was very much in play.

"=12pxwe have two stations that refuse to hand ratings over to the other."  Sorry this does not compute, perhaps expand ?

"I don't understand why AM 640 and 1010 talk radio stations are so similar. They seem like carbon copies of each other, even down to their topics and guests. It's confusing since 1010 used to be a dominant player in the market, but now it's just battling with 640 for a 2 share . In my opinion, it's important for businesses to differentiate themselves to stand out from their competitors, especially in a shrinking market like radio, but that seems to have escaped these 2 combatants

The content of both stations is often heavy and dismal. I prefer to have a laugh during the day, but talk radio in Toronto has become too negative. Additionally, both stations only focus on Toronto issues and ignore anything outside the city. As someone who lives in Oakville, I find it frustrating to hear endless chatter about Toronto traffic or the Eglinton cross-town.

While the corporate overlords may be to blame, ultimately, the stations need to step up and create must-listen talk radio or shut down their transmitters altogether."Carbon Copies Dont Work And Other Talk Radio Rants

I don't get it ( actually many things ) why AM 640 and 1010 are carbon copies of each other. With the once mighty 1010  battling 640, does somebody not know how to differentiate between the two? They both sound the same, even down to topics and guests. Radio is a shrinking market, and differentiating your product ( applies to any product) should help you stand out. It's a simple business practice but evades the management of these stations.

The content of both is so heavy and dismal in most cases. Who wants to tune into that? I enjoy the odd laugh throughout the day, but talk radio in Toronto has become misery-central.

Both have signals that cover the GTA  but ignore anything but Toronto issues. I live in Oakville. Endless chat about the Eglington cross-town or traffic jams drives me to want to stick an AM antenna through my ear drum.

You can blame the corporate overlords all you want, but at the e
