Who said anything about not needing news in a small market? If anything news is more important in smaller markets since the local paper could be long gone. Why tie up your only newsperson as a morning co-host?
I think that when the newsperson officially co-hosts a radio morning show lessens the credibility of that newscaster. Also indicates the station isn't overly concerned with news since the talent is on the air more than in the newsroom. If you're not in the newsroom, you aren't working on local stories. Again, in a smaller market with few local news sources, the radio newscasts are important and should be treated that way.
My comment about news stems from your comment "=12px I would have had three local shows with the talent that they hired."
You're right about the news position. It should be dedicated to news only, and working on those local stories. A long time ago, at big corporate radio, someone in an expensive suit said, "Let's cut the news departments in small and medium markets because no one listens to the news anymore".
The worst is when there's two hosts and the news is recorded by a third person who works on another station within the cluster.

I don't understand why so many stations, even small stations, feel that they need two or more hosts to do mornings. Zoomer in Owen Sound hired three announcers for local programming, but two are mornings. So this limits you basically to a live local morning show and afternoon drive weekdays. I would have had three local shows with the talent that they hired.
*** one does news and hosts, the other one hosts ****
and yes, you do need news in a small market.

By the way, a runner up to this horrible spot is the one from Shopify, where a female announcer gleefully tells listeners the commercial is short 6 secs. and then proceeds to hum an irritating tune to fill up the time. That one sends me straight to a channel change.
Thanks for the compliment.

Has an all woman morning show ever worked anywhere? They tried it in Ottawa with the late great Jewel FM, then dropped the idea shortly before becoming Lite FM.
Now Zoomer has dropped the idea...
Yes, there are a few. One in Calgary, one in Vancouver, and a few solo females doing mornings across Canada.

This isn't new. Bell's Move brand and Bounce brand constantly do this. Also, other Corus stations are most likely taking qualifiers for the same contest.

SOWNY » Will Joe Bowen & Jim Ralph Be Calling Leaf Games On Radio Next Season? » May 17, 2023 5:11 pm |
I don't want to take away from their legendary status as I love listening to hockey play by play on the radio and have listened to them call games for many amazing years......but it's 100% time for them to retire and I wouldn't be surprised if their contract wasn't renewed.
I don't feel listener backlash would be overwhelming. This season, we opted to listen to our TV stream over the radio broadcast.
41 years is incredible. And if they don't get a new contract, they should get a huge celebration, thank you and a big send off.

Is this because "back in the day" radio people were discouraged from taking time off?
I didn't even turn on a radio yesterday.

I heard Heather doing traffic and didn't even flinch. I think it's just radio people who feel like this. People in smaller markets wear different hats all day, every day and no one cares.

How many of us grew up in this business only to be told that women perform news and traffic positions and if you want to be a jock, it's middays?
How many of us have been told "don't get pregnant? It will ruin your career.
How many of us have been told "You're a mom now and you're not as good anymore"
You're only in this management position because we need to have a woman in that job.
No one will ever listen to an all female morning show or a solo morning show host that's female?
How many of us have heard "if you tell people about this or you make noise after you leave, you'll never get hired anywhere else?"
How many of us are still being told this in 2022?
My favorite is the line from the Jurassic era that it's scientifically proven that women hear female voices differently than men do and women don't enjoy other women on air for that reason. That's why you could never ever have an all female morning show.
IS THIS A JOKE COMMENT?

She could probably make a living being her own brand. She's super popular online as well. If I was her I would go the Youtube/Influencer route instead. Who needs traditional broadcasting when you have your own brand?

I know the show isn't what it used to be, but Derringer's on track to be #2 in the current book, and they spent a bunch on marketing it in the spring. Not going anywhere.
And Q certainly had a good book last rating. Now last time was not typical with all of the changes in the marketplace with the pandemic, but Q107 seems to have found itself over the past while. It will be interesting to see if everything holds for the September book. Sounds like weekday mornings are pretty solid. All those TV spots must be helpful.
I find it 100% relatable.
