I was at this show after gatecrashing with a bunch of kids from "Everdale" (the free school)
We had a couple of hits of "chemical mescaline" which I wanted to try after having used peyote buds...I was 15 at the time and about to have the worst experience of psychedelics I ever had.
We settled on the grass to the east of the stage and sat back for a concert day that I'll never forget, for good or bad, because for me it was a lot of both.
"Satan's Choice" Motorcycle Club escorted Jim and the Doors to the stadium from the airport and took over a section behind us leaving us between the bikers and the stage. OK until Yoko climbed into her bag and began screaming for the next seemingly endless minutes.
The bikers expressed their feelings by freely throwing empty beer bottles towards the stage, unfortunately landing on me and my hippie friends. Screams of racial epithets and boo's! came from the afflicted bikers!
Luckily, she ended and the Doors took the stage!
(Lots more to the story, but I'll tell it some other time)

Ex CHEZ jock Mike Giunta and I got into a bit more detail:

Radio was the dream job of kidss like me back in the 1960's, 70's, and into the 80's. Sad to see it in the state it's become today because it didn't have to happen.
Technologically we could have kept up with the times, like the British have. (Do you know DAB (Digital audio broadcasting) is doing fabulously well in most of the world? Excepting, of course, here)
Radio is being destroyed systematically by the people with the power to "fix it." But, they are bankers and accountants who don't know the first thing about what made radio great in the first place...
Artistic creativity.
You (Mike) understand it, I know. Harvey Glatt understood it, but the smartest move he made was selling CHEZ FM when he did. So did Jim Waters and Gary Slaight!

I fought what I thought was a good fight, but lost, crashed and burned out. Luckily I reinvented myself doing talk radio, which is the only place left to go if you want to be a personality on radio today. Otherwise get used to reading liner cards and saying "That was.."This is... "You're listening to (fill in the blank) minutes of non-stop...and don't forget to tune in tomorrow morning for..."
Remember that old  CHEZ 106 ad about "Break the General morning habit"? (referring to Ken "The General" Grant of heavyweight morning man on 580 CFRA) The picture in the ad had a guy face down on his pillow putting a hammer through his radio! That's me today listening to almost any station...
🤢 p.s. If you want to hear what can be done with radio today...and done THE RIGHT WAY! Give a listen to Indie 88 Toronto! They've got it!😜

It's not the first regularly scheduled show, but rather a special to promote Ford's new car "The Edsel".
In this show they kinescoped as well as videotaped the program, running the kinescope at the same time in case the videotape failed.
This video compares both methods side by side:EDSEL SHOW 1957 with BING CROSBY =kinescope first video tape

Yes, but I still like being on the radio yet many are telling me to retire and get out of the business.
I don't want to!
If I can do it I'll die behind a microphone... (How many times have I done that unintentionally?)

Hello, I must be going… The Opioid Epidemic & the radio show that tried to help: People Helping People — Cancelled
The day in 2001 I got hired by NewsTalk 1010 it was still better known as CFRB. I sat on the corner of Yonge & St. Clair in Toronto where their studios were located looking down on the city and feeling like I was on top of the world!

I found the archive of CKLW 20/20 Newscasts and clips that covered each day beginning jan. 1 1964 and done so that you could recreate each day if you wanted to.  Amazing!  Dick Smyth started it when he was at CKLW and Byron MacGregor continued it until the newsroom and the operation fell apart after Bassett sold CK in 1980 or so.
It was buried under garbage piled up in the station basement together with audition tapes sent to Paul Drew, The RKO "History of Rock" etc...
The tapes were in terrible shape saved only by neglect.
When I contacted the National Archives of Canada they sent a archivist from Ottawa THE NEXT DAY!
The Archives paid to have the entire collection preserved and were astounded that it had been kept by a private broadcaster.

...and fixed it by moving Benny to afternoons.

Me & Freddy Mercury of Queen.
He looked puzzled, but the truth is that had his mothers best friend not won the "Meet Freddie Mercury & Queen Contest" with Mark Elliot on CFRA Ottawa, I doubt I would have met her.

My all time favorite "Loathsome Broadcast" was the funeral announcements daily at 12:30 pm on CFRA Ottawa, for "The Kelly Funeral Homes".

I had just agreed to take over the evening show on CFRA in November of 1976 when I sat in my hotel room and decided I should turn on this new radio rocker I was to be working at and find out what they sounded like...

So I dialed "580" just in time for the funeral announcements...

I remember at that moment I began praying: "Holy Mary, Mother of God, what have I gotten myself into?"

Can I voice a complaint about people who complain about talk show hosts?

I've recently relocated to Niagara Falls, Ontario and through the mess of moving, reassembling and discarding I came across an archive of some of the best "People Helping People" calls and shows from the past 21 years.

I'm actually finding it therapeutic to listen to what I don't know I'm going to say next! (An "out-of-body" experience)

However, my listeners are complaining that I'm "not live in the studio".

They tune in and hear "You're listening to a re-broadcast" and angrily shut the radio off!!!

HEY!
This is like me giving you a steak dinner, but you'd rather have a hamburger from McDonalds!

(It's also fun relearning my editing skills, They're pretty rough in places!)
(Where is Doug Thompson when you need him?)

Brian has been on Newstalk 1010 where I worked with him.  He was the Parliamentary Correspondent and he's never been a lefty that I know of.  Even so, I found him balanced and fair in his commentary, and I'm noted as a leftist.
He certainly has my respect.

I went through this with my first wife who was French from Quebec City.  She hated Winnipeg when we lived there, but Ottawa was perfect.  Just French enough and just English enough.  Just right!

So, does CFRA still exist or has it become "CTV Ottawa" as we were forewarned?...

(Brilliant move by the way...Eliminating 68 years of heritage and familiarity in a day. If so...Are they going to run the audio from CTV Newsnet?  That sounded so great (NOT) on 1050 Toronto.  I loved hearing them say "Lets look as you can see here"... Did that get a .1 rating or a hash mark?  I can't recall)

I was actually made "Program Director" (sort of) as "Nils Johanson" of Doug Leiterman's ("This Hour Has 7 Days", "Here Come the 70's" later repackaged as "Towards the Year 2000" well known for the theme song "Tillicum" by John Mills Cockell and "Syrinx") " Leiterman had a cable franchise called "Wired City Cable TV" in Scarborough when I was 19.  I lasted about a month before all hell broke loose and I got fired for screwing up a CRTC presentation!  The TV critic at the Star lambasted Leiterman for my mistake.  It was hilarious.
Doug wasn't amused.
I had worked for Doug's wife Beryl Fox at TVO on a kids show called "Walrus" that I got no credit for.

p.s. Have I always been a problem to people in this business?

Hey IG!
I just got "had on Facebook" by some disatisfied reader who blasted me anonymously!
I thought the radio board was getting irrelevant?
Wish I'd saved a screenshot, but I woke up to my friends clamoring that this guy was blasting me on my account.
Wow!  Keep up the hatemail!
If you subscribe to me, read the email posting.
I LOVE IT!
it got ruined though when he got to the the end he praised me for PHP....

to the writer:
IF YOU'RE GOING TO CALL ME NAMES,
TELL ME I'M WORTHLESS AND "HAS BEEN" AND LEAVE IT AT THAT.
DON'T THEN TURN AROUND AND SAY SOMETHING GOOD!
IT RUINS YOUR SCREED AND YOU LOSE ALL CREDIBILITY!
(Which was "tenuous" at best because you hid behind a pseudonym)
(Never thought I'd have to teach the proper way to write "anonymous hate mail!")

I was brought in by A. (Kip) Morecroft who later ended up running Rogers Cable's Community Channel, but died very young.
Kip was the brightest and the best I ever met!
I remember him explaining concepts like "Pay Television" which sounds bizarre today, but you have to believe it made "no sense whatsoever" to my mind in 1970.  "Why would anyone pay for television?" was my mindset at the time.
He got me to understand things like "personal programming" and "the wired city" when the concepts were futuristic drivel to most everyone.
At Rogers he inherited a 2" video machine nicknamed "the white elephant" that took up a whole room but never worked properly.

I don't usually mention it, but I did a course at Humber College when it first opened in Rexdale.  (Was it 1970?) Anyhow, Graham Cable TV was opening their Community Channel and sponsored a group of volunteers to train at Humber. It was intense and taught us all the TV basics which was, when working with obsolete cameras and equipment, a lot more than any volunteer who followed got trained.

The lead instructor was "Jerry" (and I'll be damned if I can remember his last name...help!) who saw me as this impetuous kid who was determined he should be on the air at 16! "I could do it better!"

Jerry took the time to ground me into reality of how to get a job.  How to present ideas and how to basically "Win friends and Influence People".

I'm sure he gave the same talk to every kid who entered the program and thought nothing of it.  But, it stuck in me and I've always done my best to discourage people from a career that's broken almost every heart associated with it in some way, shape or form.

Media eats people up and spits them out faster than you can blink.  Harder still is dealing with what comes after success.

"How many mountains have I fallen off of in my career?" I ask.

Warren Cosford was quoted saying that he thought I'd commit suicide when my djing career came to an end in 1994.  That's not a whole lot of confidence...
