Here is a personal favorite. Not well known, but a great alt. country lyric, about a free form DJ who refuses to play the consultant's playlist, and stands up for his beliefs. He also recorded a rock take on it a few years later, but this is the one that moved me: Mark Germino sings about Rex Bob Lowenstein.

I've been using AccuRadio for half a dozen years now for my roots music fix and soundtrack. Sound quality is good to excellent, Free to stream, minimal if any commercials and a huge amount of tunes...plus great mix and match genre features. Highly recommended and well worth checking out.

Thirty years ago, I walked out of CJJR FM in Vancouver at 530am after an allnight shift. Right across the street was a high end audio visual store, with an odd looking Asian model of tv in the storefront window playing to itself, and any early passers by.  I had never seen Hi Def tv before and it was mesmerizing..the picture quality was unlike anything I had ever experienced. The price tag on it was five digits...around 20-plus thousand. Amazing import... but only for the mega rich at that time. I must have spent ten minutes just standing, jaw dropped  in amazement.

David Friend, The Canadian Press

A new report on Canada's radio airwaves says songs performed by women have been underplayed on commercial music stations for at least the past decade. The 11-year study released Monday as part of Canadian Music Week crunched data from some of the most popular radio formats and found that songs by women – especially women of colour – were played far less than songs by men.

While those findings won't surprise many in the music industry who've been outspoken for years about the lack of gender representation, the numbers offered a tangible insight into the state of a key component in the success of many performers. “Radio is the only system within the industry that collects and reports their data in such a transparent way," explained musicologist Jada Watson as she presented the study to a Toronto conference room attended primarily by women from the music industry.

"Not only does the tracking of airplay generate industry charts, but because radio is governed by the Broadcasting Act, their data (reports) distribution by time of day, song type, and ... Canadian content regulations."

"Share the Air: A Study of Gender Representation on Canadian Radio (2013-2023)" looked at the top 150 most played radio tracks of each year starting in 2013, plus all tunes played in 2023 on some of the most popular radio formats including Top 40, country and rock music.Watson conducted the study through her SongData research program, in partnership with Ottawa's National Arts Centre and advocacy group Women in Music Canada.

She found that while there was a "bump in programming" for songs by women across all radio formats last year, the study said it's too soon to tell whether that's only a temporary improvement.Women were least represented on rock stations, particularly the harder-edged active rock format where they got just 1.9 per cent of airplay on average in 2023, or one song every four-to-five-hour programming block.

The study found that alter

"Anyone familiar with the author knows it's pronounced "Albere Cam-moo," since he was from France. And he's pretty famous, so there's no reason to get that wrong unless the writer and announcer had no idea who he was."

After a couple of listens, I want to think this voice over is an AI creation...and the name "Cam-ooo" is not in it's audio file. Hence, the dumbing down of communication and information continues in 'Murica.

At my first fulltime station,CKOK Penticton, good old Garner Ted and the WT played each and every night at nine thirty on the dot leading up to a ten pm news block...right in the middle of the evening rock show. His contract with the station must have been rock solid, because he was  there when I arrived in 73,and still there into the 8os until the new owners bought out of the arrangement. Yes, the broadcast brought in huge money to the station on a yearly basis, but what a horrid tune out...and the numbers showed it. However, money talked. His dad Herbert W. held forth on Sunday nights with his own show. Tape on,monitor down.

M-F, he'd intro and briefly background a classic  b/w horror or adventure film from the early thirties. He introduced me to The Claude Raines version of the Invisble Man, Karloff.s Frankenstein, Wolfman, the original The Phantom.of the Opera and others.

The background noise during studio news is awful, and makes the broadcast sound bush. Anyone else notice this? Those lavalier mics worn by the anchors must be Radio Shack ommni-directional 29 dollar specials. They need some kind of noise filter added to the audio chain. It's particularly bad when they are turned on again after an out of studio report,or weather segment. Cheaping out,CHCH?

I just watched a PVR'd copy of CHCH's early 30s late movie "The Front Page" This comedy was shockingly loaded with sexist, racist, and red-baiting dialogue and situations ....and there was no disclaimer either in front or during the show. I know for the era,it was common to air these things,...but in this "woke" day and age, they took a real chance by not fronting a disclaimer.

CNN ran some rather unusual ads this past week. One was a primetime evangelical begathon. I could have sworn I was watching Crossroads instead of the election coverage.A lenghty, flat-out begathon for support, funds and " offerings" for the Billy Graham Jr. Ministries. Another was a blatant right wing wacko rant (think: Guns,God,and that horrid Comrade Biden and his henchmen) about saving the GOP's "stolen" election. I understand CNN might need the ad money...but these two spots stuck out like sore thumbs among the medicine and insurance ads.

Back in the day,any morning show worth it's salt used parody commercials, either pre-produced,or live. Garrison Keilor did live ones on Prairie Home Companon. In Radio's Golden age, the great Jack Benny used the live commerical to great advantage, integrating them into the script of his show. Here is a short piece where he talks about the Jello spots.

I empathize with that family. We have been in our condo apartment for six years, and the family below us has been in theirs for at least ten. We occasionly hear a faint broadcast feed of some sort, coming thru the wall in our bedroom. The couple downstairs say they have no tv or radio playing, but they have heard it too. We have checked piping, wiring, framing and all..still no answer. Weird.
