It was mainly about improving Amercian TV reception in those early days, but it's easy to forget about the importation of FM signals from the States. The article below is from Nov. 1976, and shows which stations cable companies wanted to bring to their customers.
Do any of them still do this?
(By the way, I recognize all of them except WREZ Buffalo. I thought I knew all the Queen City stations back then, but I'm not familiar with those call letters. Could that be a typo or did such a station exist?)
WREZ was the call letters for the present day WNED-FM 94.5 from 1973-1975. It was co-owned at the time with the old WEBR AM. In 1975 Western New York Educational TV Association bought it and it became a classical music station.

SOWNY » Do You Remember Your First Ever DX Catch? » April 6, 2024 12:33 am |
About 1965 My parents got an AM radio for Christmas shaped like a world globe. One night my Dad put it up on the mantle above the fireplace and turned it on. I couldn't believe my ears what came out of the radio. 'This is WWL New Orleans" in Niagara Falls! After that night I kept trying to receive it again. I picked up other distant stations along the way. ( This was before digital readout on radios.) I caught the DX bug. My father eventually got me Whites Radio Log in Communications World and I was able to log it again and found other DXing opportunities.

I recently saw the current "Guess Who". They were terrible. I also saw Burton Cummings solo. He did some of the old Guess Who songs. He was excellent. It sounded like the old Guess Who.

They will probably have inexpensive USB dongles with 3.0 tuners like a Roku that you can plug into your non 3.0 TV to get 3.0. It's all digital. By then practically all TVs will be smart TVs. I think that they will probably extend the deadline. They said AM radio is going away. It's still here. I have a 3.0 tuner. The picture and sound are better than 1.0 and the signal is more stable. The only problem is the encryption on some stations. The reason why North America went digital for TV was because the cellular companies wanted more frequencies and analogue was hogging up the bandwidth. Digital requires less bandwidth.

I have YouTubeTV with Spectrum internet only here in WNY. I can login to YouTubeTV on my smartphone using cellular data. YouTubeTV uses your IP address to determine where you are. If let's say I travel from the Buffalo area to Rochester I would get Rochester local TV on the app.

No I never had trouble with WBNF. I am far enough north of Grand Island that I don't receive it plus the WBNF signal is very directional away from Canada. I am right on the border plus I am using an antenna pointed towards Toronto-Hamilton. The only Toronto area channel I don't get is CFTO.

I saw the French 819 line system at the French Pavilion at Expo 67 in Montreal. I noticed how much sharper the picture was compared to the North American NTSC system.
When I went to Germany with the USAF they had at the base a TV that could receive NTSC (for the AFRTS broadcasts), PAL and SECAM. The German PAL broadcasts were sharper than NTSC (Never The Same Colour).

SOWNY » Is The Picture Really Better With A 4K TV? » July 25, 2023 2:53 pm |
Good 1080p is almost as good as 4K. 4K is better if the program has HDR. I get ATSC 3.0 from Buffalo none of the channels have 4K. From what I have read there is no 4K over the air broadcasts in the US. Not enough bandwidth with the subchannels they are carrying. With Buffalo 2 1080i channels and 3 720p channels. Maybe 4K in the future if the FCC allows ATSC 1.0 stations to convert to 3.0 which would free up bandwidth since some of the subchannels would go back to their old 1.0 frequencies.

Same programming as 1.0. Slightly better picture better colour more stable. The transmitter is in Grand Island NY from what I understand it is directional away from Canada. It is still in a testing phase.
