You'd think a channel with the letters "NBC" in its name would be affiliated with that network. But come later this year, that will no longer be the case.
MSNBC (where the MS once stood for Microsoft) is divorcing itself from its bigger brother and by later this year, it will no longer share resources, graphics, logos (including the Peacock) and most importantly, reporters and anchors with its over-the-air brother.
Which leaves those working there with a tough decision to make.
"NBC News employees who worked both on the broadcast and cable sides have been asked to choose which entity they will join. Most NBC News staffers are choosing to stick with the network. "
The move comes as owner Comcast sees a decline in cable subscriptions and does not want the second place all news station to cause problems for its richer parent. Some well known names are jumping ship to go with the cable station, and that means they will no longer be seen on NBC News.
NBC & MSNBC Are About To Become Separate Networks

This isn't the first time NBC has split. Back in 1945, due to antitrust litigation, NBC sold off its Blue Network, which became ABC .
I wonder if NBC News will now follow the example of ABC and CBS and create 24 hour live streaming service?

Correct. And new anchor Tom Llamas presides over one of its newscasts immediately after fronting NBC Nightly News.
