Agreed, but possibly accommodating listeners looking for the biography? Quite a few might be looking for 'Martin Whatshisname'. I had a foreman who was name challenged, constantly sending our maintenance workers out to see 'Whatshisname' on #6 crane. 😁
Haha, true!

SOWNY » Help finding an old documentary (possibly CBC) » November 20, 2024 3:18 pm |
I came across this Reddit post a few days ago. Poster is looking to find an old documentary or news report about Sikh-Hindu conflict in Canada, and offers this comment:
“This documentary, published by CBC’s The Fifth Estate, includes footage from an older documentary or news report. Could someone please help me find the original report? The footage appears from 7:06 to 7:20 and again from 8:40 to 9:02.”
The poster also wishes to identify the reporter, in the older clip, sitting at the desk with a pile of newspapers or documents in front of him. I thought it might be Eric Malling with a late 70s/early 80s haircut, but I’m not sure.
Poster did contact CBC for assistance but didn’t hear back from anyone.
I thought that some here might find this an interesting challenge, given the collective institutional memories of many members! In the second clip, I could only identify Flora MacDonald, which would put it between 1979 and 1980.
Thanks for any help!

IIRC that is/was an OPP communications tower
The OPP tower is east of the former CHIC 790 site, now CHLO 530 (located between the 6th line and Trafalgar Road). FWIW, that site has quite the history. CHIC 790 had a 10 tower array at the site. It was also the original site of CFNY-FM (formerly CHIC-FM after moving from 2 Ellen Street in Brampton) before moving to the CN Tower. I believe it is also the site of the failed application by Evanov to move CIDC-FM closer to Toronto.
Thanks!

It’s been a rough few days for the entertainment world - first Maggie Smith, then Kris Kristofferson, now John Amos.
I didn’t watch Good Times during its first run (I probably wouldn’t have appreciated it as I was younger than 10 years old), but a few years ago I watched the whole series through on Antenna TV.
A very minor role for him, but I remember when he played the father of one of Will’s girlfriends on Fresh Prince.

That 290 mile reception range is a huge red flag. With the curvature of the earth, the best you could expect to receive with an outdoor antenna is signals 75-85 miles away. An indoor antenna probably half that distance.
Heh. This reminds me of when my spouse went to Save and Replay in Mississauga to buy our rooftop antenna. He was looking at the bigger antennas and the salesperson asked if he was trying to pick up a signal from Algonquin Park 😄 In the end he settled for one that would get us channels from the GTA and Buffalo, and it’s served us well for over a decade now.

I was still asleep (was very pregnant and had lost my job earlier in the summer, so I had a good excuse to sleep in). Heard the news flash on 680 and was briefly confused because I thought the WTC was in Chicago. Went downstairs, turned on the TV to Breakfast Television and saw Kevin Frankish with the breaking news.
My husband worked at the Toronto Star printing plant at the time, and he got called into work as they were running an extremely rare afternoon edition. I still have the copies of the papers that he brought home that day and for the next few days.
