He'll remain PM and Liberal leader until a new leader is chosen. He has discontinued the current session of Parliament without dissolving it until March 24th. This is controversial, however, it has been done from time to time by other Prime Ministers -- both Conservative and Liberal.

Trudeau promises a "robust" leadership process, meaning he endorses nobody, and indicates there should be multiple candidates for the leadership.
One of them is likely to be Kristia Freeland, possibly Mark Carney, maybe Melanie Jolie and likely more.
But if the polls hold the same, whomever becomes new leader will likely be a Kim Campbell prime minister and only hold the job for a month or so.
Oh well, that's enough to get your official portrait hung in the Parliament building.

It will be interesting to see if the people who were looking to Pierre as an alternative change their minds when he's not running against JT.

We're doomed, we got duped by this effen narcissist. He might not have to leave if there is a national emergency. Yet, he leaves, when our economy sucks, tariffs are looming, our dollar is low and he just walks away for 2+ months.
He is a friggin' asshat. And Singh is no better, nice to see a socialist drive a Maserati. Man, Canada is doomed/
I pray we become a 51st state.

I see there's no point in trying to stop the politics. So how about this as a compromise? You can put almost anything reasonable here, but just in this one thread. Please keep it off all the others. This is where it should go. Hope that's fair!
Everyone else who hates this stuff can skip this thread and stay happy!

RA has pleaded to keep partisan politics out of this forum .. & you go & post "We're doomed, we got duped by this effen narcissist .. He is a friggin' asshat .. And Singh is no better, nice to see a socialist drive a Maserati. Man"
a stereo-typical MAGA "i do whatever the frig i want" attitude .. go run your own forum.
we want you to be happy .. move to Trump land .. it's a win/win ..
My apologies RA ..

Thanks RA, decent of you, however I did reply to the “51st state” post earlier today. I think when this is such huge news, it is hard not to expect some reaction on SOWNY, but let’s not drag it out for weeks as there’s radio to chat about!

To respond to Joe's misunderstanding as to why Trudeau chose now to leave:
The Foreign interference report is due out later this month, many suspect that the whole reason why the Conservatives are so utterly desperate to hold an early election is that they themselves are compromised the most (we've already had testimony that confirmed Poillievre was helped by the Indian government to get his leadership role in the PC party, even as Patrick Brown who was a frontrunner got conveniently banned from running due to a scandal that later proved to be utter rubbish. Brown testified that he doesn't think the India interference played a role in his losing out, but I suspect he's just trying not to burn his bridges with the PC party so he can try again).
The news has under-reported the fact that Poilievre keeps saying No to getting his security clearance so that he can read the confidential reports that Trudeau, May, and Singh are able to. Why? Well mostly likely he would fail to get that clearance because there is something in his past that is incriminating (or as some have pointed out, his wife's past related to her father). He seems very adamant about not getting it using any flimsy excuse he can.
Now a key point: if he were to become Prime Minister, he would get automatic security clearance without having to undergo an investigation, which again I think he would otherwise fail. And he could presumably stall or bury the release of the foreign interference report as the PM.
Now that Singh has backstabbed the Liberals and signaled that he was going to vote alongside the Reform Party (errr, the "Conservatives") for no confidence, this could have triggered an early election that might allow Mr PP to become the new PM. By proroguing government the way Trudeau has, there's no chance for Singh to bring down the government before the Foreign Interference report can come out. And when it does, a lot of voters may see Mr "slogan boy" and his party of far-right morons in a very different light.
Trudeau's not a fool, he knows there's been non-stop interference in our political system for years from Russia, China, and India. And that he's been the target of insane lies spread on TikTok (to influence young people to turn against him), and on Twitter and Facebook. He's taking a very smart route to ensuring other Canadians get a chance to see just how widespread that interference has been, by preventing an early election. And I would recommend people pay good attention to it before we wind up with our own Trump Lite running our country into the ground.

I feel security clearance should be mandatory if you desire to lead a federal political party.
Outside of that, I have nothing to add. I like to amend the Shakespeare line about killing all the lawyers first and make politicians second.

NOTE: My apologies to Radioactive, I thought the other thread was the one open to political talk but apparently it's this one.
Just to follow up on what I had posted in the closed thread, this was the reason why PP only posted a pre-recorded video and didn't do a live presser. When he doesn't have rehearsed slogans and rhetoric to ramble out, he is a terrible speaker. A perfect example from 2022 as he stumbles around to answer a question that his handlers didn't anticipate:
His handlers obviously don't want him to embarrass himself and told him to release a video. Imagine if he was the PM and had to negotiate with Trump. For all his many, many flaws, Trump is a fast talker and can make up lies to support his case on the spot (Trump himself admitted to it once, where he bragged he "won" a phone argument with our PM by conjuring up a bunch of fake statistics to support his counter-argument).
