Seemingly small chinks in the armour but are the traditional networks traveling the same peak and valley of AM radio and the daily newspaper?

As a listener, I loved it.

In the mid-sixties I was a teenager living in stodgy Ottawa where Lawrence Welk was consistently #1 on the Hit Parade. Our family went camping in Pinery Provincial Park where we could pick up the signal from Windsor's CKLW. I had never heard anything so good, or entertaining.

On-air talent was top notch, the sound was energetic... the commercials had imagination. I read somewhere that CK sped up their turntables 15% to add to the frenzy... (or perhaps the commercial time?)

Not a favorite of everyone but to me it was radio at its peak.

I second "W.O.L.D". That was the first song that came to my mind.

I liked it but perhaps not a favorite if you're Talent.

As I recall, Russ Thompson, afternoon drive at CKFM at the time, refused to play it.

I like PBS. I am a subscriber. Their NewsHour is definitely not pro-right but no one forces me to watch it.

I had heard a Trump comment that 'you're commercial or you're not'. For PBS, I assumed that meant, as innocuous as they are, the Viking Riverboat commercials.

Again, an assumption, I figured it was NPR that he was after, not so much for their pro-left opinions/features, but for their lack of balancing pro-right opinions/features.

Taxpayers of both sides fund them, taxpayers of both sides deserve a voice.

Thank you to those who pointed out that taxpayer-funded Healthcare is a very attractive benefit to manufacturing in Canada.

RA...

Wow. I would never try to engage in a debate with you about Trump or perhaps even US politics in general. You know much more about the details than I do.

These days, I figure that it up to those much younger than I am to decide in which direction the country goes. My days of hanging off every utterance from cable news channels, giving myself daily ulcers, are long behind me.

Now I tend to focus on results, rather than how we got there. All I am willing to do is to vote every four years then hope for the best. I have been a conservative all my life and when it comes to making a choice when voting, who best aligns with what I believe:

Closed borders
Lower taxes
Smaller government
Drill, baby, drill
Merit-based opportunities...No Affirmative Action... DEI by another name
Two genders
Solving National issues, not interfering in International issues

So the best choice of the two, is Trump. Is he a perfect feces-throwing chimp?

Of course not. But he best aligns with what I believe and gets the results that I hope for.

Separately but related, I could not tell you one comment Justin Trudeau has ever said. I was not a fan of his father and I am most likely not a fan of him. Until this past weekend when the UK waded into the Ukrainian sinkhole pledging £1bn and boots on the ground, I had no idea who the Prime Minister of the UK was.

On the other hand, many Canadians - certainly on this board - are acutely aware of the US President and are PASSIONATE in their abject hatred of the man. It's a free country with free speech and we are all able to hate who we like and express it.

The way I see it, that much vitriol about a politician that you cannot affect or vote for is very similar to what they say about holding a grudge... swallowing poison then expecting the other person to die.

But that's just me.

Thank you for thi

This post contains no pro/anti Trump comments or opinions. This post contains no pro/anti Canadian comments or opinions.

It is a question about two Trade Agreements between Canada and the US. that took effect during my time growing up, living and working in Canada.

Being as RA has given us some latitude in this thread, I am hoping that my questions about the Auto Pact and NAFTA can be answered by someone more knowledgeable than I, perhaps a Newsman or, at very least, someone who was watching The National and not the Baby Blue movie on CITY like I was.

In a nutshell, what was in it for the US. Did they benefit and how?

The Auto Pact resulted in an increase from seven percent of vehicles made in 1964 in Canada that were sent south of the border, to sixty percent in 1968. This created thousands of jobs and decreased vehicle costs to Canadian consumers. What was the US's motive? How did it help them?

A similar question with NAFTA. It appears that a market of 10x was opened to Canadian exporters but the US gained perhaps the size of one additional state. What was the US's rationale?

Let me state again that I do not know the answer but would like to find out. These are not 'gotcha' questions, ' I told you so questions', or loaded questions. I have long wondered why, plain and simple. Whatever the answer, the US made these deals with its eyes wide open.

I am not saying that he is right, but I am wondering if this is an area where Trump feels the US is being taken advantage of.

Again, I am not saying that he is right...

I hope that someone might be able to give me insight into what the US had to gain, or, was it simply worldly thinking??

Thank you.

Tying broadcasting into this thread, I hope that no Canadian Patriot watched the American Super Bowl game, especially using a VPN or a Seattle TV feed to circumvent CanCon.

I hope no one munched on Doritos dipped in Old El Pase salsa during the game.

Or ordered a pizza from Dominos at half time. Or, perish the thought, added an order of Buffalo Wings, the great American creation. Perhaps they slopped Kraft dip sauce on their Hanes t-shirts or Levi jeans.

Driving home in their Ford or GM product, I hope they didn't listen to an American artist on Sirius/XM. At home, once the game was over, I hope they didn't continue to watch a television program produced for ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox or even the CW.

If they are sports fans, I trust that they do not watch any NBA, MLB, MLS games or indeed the NHL, an American non-profit headquartered in Manhattan whose Canadian players make up 41% of the league.

Nor did they go to work the next day at a Canadian subsidiary of a US parent, a company who manufactures product for export to the US or a natural resource company thriving due to shipments made to, at 75%, Canada's largest trading partner.

You don't want to be aligned with the US or become the 51st State?

It's a bit late.

It's good to see that this non-political forum is well-balanced.

As a US tax-payer, President Trump and our next President, J.D. Vance, did exactly what 77 million of us voted for.

We are well-over being the world's policeman and footing the bill, especially for lost causes halfway round the world.

If you do not like President Trump's solution for peace or of you agree with the Ingrate's performance, then all of you other NATO countries are more-than-welcome to step into the financial breach to begin sending good billions after bad billions to fund this unwinnable war.

Though what this has to do with radio, Lord knows.

This is a new one on me. I did do a search and it doesn't seem to have been mentioned before.

This test originated at Radio Central in New York in the early 1940s as a cold reading test given to prospective radio talent to demonstrate their speaking ability and breath control. The way it was shown to me was along the lines of a reverse Twelve Days of Christmas in that you repeated and built on the previous line.....

Line1
Line 1 & 2
Line 1 & 2 & 3
Line 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 etc

Professional announcers would be asked to perform the entire speaking test within a single breath without sounding rushed or out of breath.

Here are the phrases...

  • One hen
  • Two ducks
  • Three squawking geese
  • Four limerick oysters
  • Five corpulent porpoises
  • Six pairs of Don Alverzo's tweezers
  • Seven thousand Macedonians in full battle array
  • Eight brass monkeys from the ancient sacred crypts of Egypt
  • Nine sympathetic, apathetic, catatonic old men on roller skates, with a marked propensity toward procrastination and sloth
  • Ten lyrical, spherical, diabolical denizens of the deep who all stall around the corner of the quo of the quay of the quivery, all at the same time.

Wow. And I struggle with being a Greeter at Graingers, ".... home of hard hats, french safes, rain shoes, overcoats and work boots."

I've seen three seasons of the original French version of TF1's "HPI" (Haut Potentiel Intellectuel or "Giftedness") on MHzChoice. It starts out cute but the premise eventually gets old. One of the reasons I watched all the seasons available was to see Audrey Fleurot's generous décolletage well-displayed in clothes from the French equivalent to Forever 21.

I hold out little hope for any Hollywood original idea gained by watching tv in France.

Shogun???? The big winner??

Haven't they beat this story to death??

But I looked it up referencing the years...

I read the book in the seventies. The Richard Chamberlain TV-adaptation was in the eighties. The Shogun-ish version with Tom Cruise, the Last Samurai, was in 2003.

That face in the mirror is getting old.

CFRB got in my way, too, for WCFL. But WLS was loud and clear in the evenings back in the late sixties, early seventies.

I worked a project in Chicago in the 90's. I called in and got to talk to John Landekker when he was morning drive at WJMK.

My first time listening to Rewound Radio... great tunes! Thanks for that. I'll be sure to be listening this weekend for the WLS/WCFL Extravaganza!!

A year before I got married for the first time. I think I had begun the transition to listening to Buffalo's (automated) Rock-102 WBEN-FM at home, CKFH daytime and 'KB or WLS at night on the car's AM radio.

#1 - The Streak?? Damn, we had no taste.

#7 - Werewolf by the Five-Man Electircal Band - never heard it and it doesn't age well on YouTube.

#12 - I'm A Train - Albert Hammond - I really liked the song but I'm surprised it reached #12.

#20 - Just As Bad As You - Shawne Jackson - didn't know it was penned by Dominic Trioano

#23 - by Fludd - a follow-up to Cousin Mary? The band name is all I remember.

#25 - I always thought Billy Paul was a one-hit wonder with Me and Mrs Jones.

#26 - Bobby Womack - Kinda Muscle Shoals for CHUM's playlist.

#29 - Paul Anka song. Never heard it.

However....

And though her daddy would scream and shout
She simply would not take the garbage out!

When I lived in Burlington in the eighties my go-to station was WGRQ (then) and Carl 'Blood-n-Guts' Russo.

Life happened then a couple of years ago I flew into Buffalo, rented a car and tuned in WGRF. By the time I got to St. Catharines the signal was gone.

Dick Biondi at WLS is a bit before my time, then I couldn't pick up him up at 1000 WCFL very well, with 1010 CFRB being too close.

To me, WLS was John Records Landecker... Boogie Check, Boogie Check, Rah, Rah.

JAM Creative Productions began producing jingles/beds in the mid-seventies and well beyond for WLS and a hundred other stations around the world. In 1985 they put out this novelty song mentioning many of those stations, including 1050 CHUM, 570 CHYM, 630 CHED in Edmonton and Montreal's CKGM.
