Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

I am surprised that nobody has yet commented on Trump's reality show performance at the White House today.  If Trump really is siding with Putin and no longer cares about the rest of the free world including Canada, are we in danger of losing our freedom of the press and media in a world dominated by the likes of Donald Trump (Corleone) and Putin?  He now controls which media have access to White House events. Who will defend the free world?
The fact that today's episode of the new Apprentice show was on display for the world to see was both embarrassing and an eye-opener of what Canada could be facing next.

Can the military step in and take this guy and his band of crazies out? Put Obama back.

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

Trump has already fired several of the top people in the air force, navy and army... with an obvious goal of replacing them with Trump loyalists.

Makes sense: if you're going to lead a Christian Nationalist takeover of a country, you definitely have to make sure that your own military can't be used against you...

Since 1945, only two American presidents have had negative public approval ratings after their first month in office. Both of them are named Donald Trump.

mojo55, I did consider commenting on this minutes after I picked my jaw off the ground when I watched it while having a late lunch, but decided not to as we’re supposed to leave politics off of this board, which I really struggle to do! I agree, Canada could be facing this next and we’re far from ready.

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

Some of us have been sounding the alarm on this felonious Russian asset ever since he rode the down escalator, in 2015.

He isn't a clown; he's an extremely dangerous, devious traitor to everything, except power and money. Traitor to his wives. Traitor to his friends. Traitor to his business relations, and now traitor to his country and its allies and trading partners.

Anyone who thinks he hasn't had, and won't have, an overwhelmingly negative impact on Canada's economy, our media and our way of life, is dreaming in technicolour.

This should be the number one story in all discussion, in this country, public and private.

The way of life we've all built and grown accustomed to is under dire threat. Our children and grandchildren will pay the price if we don't take this madman very, very seriously.

This professor refers to Trump as a narcissistic sociopath, sending the USA hurtling towards not just authoritarianism but an actual dictatorship.

https://www.instagram.com/p/DGm70_Rozm2/

He's not wrong, and someone online pointed out this week that the Republicans passed a bill in the House, called the SAVE act, that requires a birth certificate or passport to vote. So your current name would have to match your birth name. If you don't have a passport and you're a woman who changed your last name when you got married to your spouse... you can't vote. This would presumably leave out 69 million women from voting according to one woman. I've not verified this myself, but it sounds about right with what the Republicans have been moving towards: voter suppression of traditional Democrat voters.

Obama was my favourite demicrat.
In 2016, I was hoping he would run again.
He was fair, not far-left.
But, about the media, if trump gets rid of pbs the US will be doomed when it comes to smart information.
Also, kids will be doomed if they still watch PBS kids, there programs were very educational, they toght us plain old canadians/americans about other cultures.
I hope trump smartins up and keeps pbs/wned alive.

What a dumb rule.
Most women change there last names.
He just wants to make sure he takes over and stays in power.
I'm a conservitive, but trump's just not one.
He's a evil dictater who hates canada and canadians.
He should learn about the cultures he will get rid of like the newfie culture and nova scotian culture.
Also, the quebecois culture.

Obama is constitutionally prohibited from being president again. For those that are inclined to obey the constitution, presidents are limited to two terms.

Obama served from 2009-2013 and 2013-2017.

I wonder how any remake of the FCC will affect radio? And whether or not any economic consequences of the new regime will impact the viability of radio - for instance, might we see AM make a resurgence (talk radio), or might we see an economic downturn that increases the rate of station closures?

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

This is such an interesting dilemma for the Orange Monster. On the one hand, AM radio in the U.S. is the bastion and strength of the Conservative movement. On the other, Elon's Teslas don't have AM radios and there's no way he's going to want to add them if the proposed Act mandating the band in autos passes.

So what will the feds in the U.S. decide? Unless they make an exemption for the equally monstrous Musk (which undoubtedly would not go over well), it's quite the conundrum.

Not really sure that the average MAGA voter would own or buy an EV.  Tesla sales are sliding right now.  Down 16% from December 2024 to January 2025.  From CNN..https://www.cnn.com/2025/03/01/business/tesla-takedown-musk-doge/index.html#:~:text=Tesla%20recently%20reported%20a%2016,December%202023%20and%20January%202024.

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

I'm not sure that's the point. This will cost the automakers extra money (no doubt passed on to the consumer) at a time when tariffs are also going to raise the cost of a new car at least 3-grand in the U.S. Even if they don't buy an EV, some car manufacturers were talking about eliminating AM in gas powered vehicles, then changed their minds under pressure.

If it becomes mandatory, they won't have a choice. So do they please the Republicans who want Conservative radio to spread their message or do they please Trump who wants to please Musk? You know he won't want to spend the extra dollars to put the band in his cars, which under a new law, he'd have to do.

Also, if MAGA members won't buy an EV as you say and Democratic voters are boycotting Musk's companies as they've vowed, who's left to buy a Tesla, AM radio or not?

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

It's good to see that this non-political forum is well-balanced.

As a US tax-payer, President Trump and our next President, J.D. Vance, did exactly what 77 million of us voted for.

We are well-over being the world's policeman and footing the bill, especially for lost causes halfway round the world.

If you do not like President Trump's solution for peace or of you agree with the Ingrate's performance, then all of you other NATO countries are more-than-welcome to step into the financial breach to begin sending good billions after bad billions to fund this unwinnable war.

Though what this has to do with radio, Lord knows.

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

This is why I try - apparently unsuccessfully - to keep politics off this board. It's always going to offend someone.

The reason this thread is still here is because I, too, share the original poster's fear of what he's seeing in our greatest neighbour. You are certainly welcome to place your vote for whoever you want, although I hope you will get another chance to make that choice in four years. That's far from guaranteed if the history of despots elsewhere is any indication.

And you may yet come to regret that choice when you discover four years down the road that what you voted for has brought mostly ruin to his biggest boosters.

And as for what this has to do with radio and TV, when the leader of a supposedly free country issues threats of pulling licences from stations because he doesn't like what they say about him or sues CBS' "60 Minutes" for millions because they edited a piece featuring a political rival for time - like newsrooms have been doing for decades - and it wasn't in his favour, or bans legitimate news sources (like AP) from the White House for capricious and ridiculous reasons, then we all have cause to worry.

History shows the very first thing dictators do is take over the media, suppressing anyone who opposes them. I love U.S. TV and always have. A lot us north of the border are scared shitless that what we've seen too often overseas is now right next door to us. We're not there yet - but you can see it from here.

Nobody held a gun to America's head to be the world's policeman to foot the bill.  The US seemed to have appointed itself to that role.  Other NATO countries have long stepped into the financial breach as well and have been spending good billions in this and other conflicts.

If the US no longer wants to be the leader of the free world, that is their decision.  But please understand that the influence and calling of the shots are also gone.

You are correct that all of this on surface has little to do with radio or TV.  However the current US president is a media type and is constantly talking about numbers, media and ratings.  He even said that the mess on Friday with Ukraine's president Zelenskyy was "good television".

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

When tRump threatened this country; when tRump belittled our prime minister; when tRump attacked our deputy prime minister; when tRump announced that Canada isn't a real country...it became our business.

Anyone with an ounce of historical reference understands exactly what tRump is up to, and where this is leading. Unfortunately, 77 million Americans chose to ignore the lessons of history.

If tRump wants Canada, it's too bad that his great-grandfather (you know, the brothel operator in the Klondike) didn't stay here. In other words, tRump, get your nose out of our business.

Wouldn't it, won't it, be great when the average level-headed American citizen starts to speak up for and support their Canadian cousins. All it'll take is the right spark.

The orange one may or may not have tertiary syphilis but he sure acts like he does.

Would a media company build listeners/viewers if they decided to no longer play clips of his irritating voice but simply quote him by reading his words. I've heard numerous people say they'd prefer to pay more for a channel that allowed them to escape the sound of Trump. Might it be worth trying out? Run it up the flagpole? 🇨🇦🤞

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

What  deLaat fails to understand is that the US gains a LOT of influence over foreign powers by virtue of being the world's policeman. This is known as "soft power" (this includes humanitarian aid like what was being provided through USAID before Elon Musk began to attack it).  When it comes to things like having sway over how nations may vote at the United Nations or within NATO, the US's role as a protector for other weaker countries allowed it to both be seen as a role model and the standard bearer of how other countries should behave on a global scale.

Remember, the US hasn't exactly been seen in a positive light by many countries, and big reason why Americans like to pretend that they are Canadians when travelling abroad.  That money is well-spent. By having Trump stupidly abandon those causes, he is allowing the US' biggest rival, China, to now step in and take over when it comes to soft power, and you can bet that those countries will become more and more aligned with China's goals and values, in the future, and against the increasingly isolated and hated, United States. Trump is a small thinker, who doesn't understand the big picture at all, and quite frankly so are his followers.

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

Pfizer is the 2nd largest recipient of USAID, after Afghanistan. In that country the Taliban is paid not to attack USAID developments, like the never finished power plant that generates 2% of its intended output.
In 1996 Joe Biden sponsored a bill to restructure agencies which placed USAID under direct authority of Secretary of State. Endless billions have been wasted on these soft power initiatives. Even Hillary Clinton acknowledged that USAID has lost its way in her book 'Something Lost, Something Gained'. Marco Rubio has full legal right to spend taxpayer money only in the best interest of his country.

Re: Is Today's News From Washington A Sign of Darker Times Ahead

Yes, I'm sure Marco Rubio will spend it "wisely" at Trump's direction: billions of taxpayer money into  Trump-owned properties or that of his daughter. If there's one thing I've learned about the Republicans, they love to claim money is being "wasted" on initiatives that help the poor and downtrodden, when it could be used to enrich themselves, their political donors, and their wealthy allies.

I'm not going to pretend that every altruistic effort by the Democrats will be a smashing success, but I know for sure, the Republicans will do jack nothing except cut taxes for the rich (like recently extending Trump's tax cuts that primarily saved billions for billionaires), steal money out of social security to pay for those cuts, spread misinformation about vaccines to ensure the return of measles and other deadly diseases, push religion back into schools where it doesn't belong, and continuing to bow to Putin because Trump is clearly a Russian asset.

America?  Your country peaked during the tech bubble, when that crashed, it began declining at a rapid rate, with housing bubbles and mortgage-backed security scams, crypto bubbles, health care fraud, increasingly wider and wider gaps between the rich and poor, and now you elected a president who is a convicted rapist, con man, confirmed pedophile, and Russian agent to run your country in order to "make it great again". The real reason why Canada doesn't want to become the 51st state?  No country wants to join the US as it circles the drain into the toilet, because its people have been suckered by decades of lies from FOX News.

Tying broadcasting into this thread, I hope that no Canadian Patriot watched the American Super Bowl game, especially using a VPN or a Seattle TV feed to circumvent CanCon.

I hope no one munched on Doritos dipped in Old El Pase salsa during the game.

Or ordered a pizza from Dominos at half time. Or, perish the thought, added an order of Buffalo Wings, the great American creation. Perhaps they slopped Kraft dip sauce on their Hanes t-shirts or Levi jeans.

Driving home in their Ford or GM product, I hope they didn't listen to an American artist on Sirius/XM. At home, once the game was over, I hope they didn't continue to watch a television program produced for ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox or even the CW.

If they are sports fans, I trust that they do not watch any NBA, MLB, MLS games or indeed the NHL, an American non-profit headquartered in Manhattan whose Canadian players make up 41% of the league.

Nor did they go to work the next day at a Canadian subsidiary of a US parent, a company who manufactures product for export to the US or a natural resource company thriving due to shipments made to, at 75%, Canada's largest trading partner.

You don't want to be aligned with the US or become the 51st State?

I just heard David Frum, a former White House employee to previous presidents, note on CFRB that during that disastrous meeting on Friday, Trump banned the AP and Reuters from the Oval Office, but invited TASS, the Russian propaganda arm, to attend. If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know, I don't know what does.

It's a bit late.

And I certainly hope you don't live or work in a building that contains Canadian lumber, of which the U.S. imports a significant amount.

Or that you don't drive a car that contains Canadian-made steel.

Or that the vegetables and fruits you buy at the supermarket aren't grown using Canadian potash, a huge export to the U.S.

Or that you can live without the aluminium in so many products you use every day without even realizing it, the majority of which comes from north of the border.

Or that that gas and oil you use in your cars and your homes don't come from Alberta, selling it to you at a discount.

Or the boundless wattage of electricity sent from Canada to many northern States doesn't suffer a sudden blackout.

Or all those cheaper drugs that many Americans order from Canada because they save them a fortune don't stop flowing your way.

Or all those tourist dollars from Canadians flocking over the border every day, especially in the winter, don't stop coming.

It's not exactly quite the one-way street you imply. And letting traffic flow both ways is the only way it works. You may not think much of Canada. But boy, will you notice when we're not there anymore.
