CKWR 98.5 in Kitchener has been having issues this weekend too.
An annoying buzz on their signal which they have been advising is an issue with their Bell line to the transmitter.  (Their online feed is fine.)
Wonder if Bell is having issues in the KW area.

+1 for Ed.
There even used to be a website dedicated to asking for a DVD release.  I believe music rights were a big issue.

But what I really want to watch are some of the CTV classics like Thrill of a Lifetime, Circus!, and Live It Up!

I remember that Live it Up reruns air briefly on those early 2000's specialty channels on Expressvue (Pamela Wallen channel?) But you can't even find it on YouTube.

If you want to get your Cancon gameshow fix (including Pitfall, Acting Crazy, Definition, and my faves, The Mad Dash and Test Pattern), check out BonusRound.ca.
For 2 bucks a month (an amazing deal), there are tonnes (metric) of Canadian game shows to stream!
(Note that this is an unpaid plug for this amazing streaming service!)

Just received an email from Bell that in the coming months, the will stop supporting SD satellite receivers.
(And that they will upgrade my old receivers to HD for free!)

I wonder what they are planing to do with their original Anik satellite that sent the SD signals and if it is capable of broadcasting HD.

Thanks to Bonusround.ca, I'm catching up on episodes of Test Pattern.
First of all, it's a travesty that there is not more info on the internet about host Dan Gallagher (RIP).

2nd, where was VTR Productions in Toronto located?  It appears that they no longer exists.
All I can really find is a 2015 SOWNY post about VTR Productions Demo Reels https://gta.boardhost.com/viewtopic.php?id=45
and that Fraggle Rock was shot there.

Where was this legendary production studio?

I just got back from vacation, fired up the computer, and pulled up CKWR's online feed.
I noticed a really bad hum on their audio and thought my speakers were bad.
I then noticed that I had to search around the house to find a working FM radio and noticed the hum appeared OTA too.
Can anyone else in the KW area confirm what my ears are hearing?
Hard to believe that they can continue to broadcast with audio that is that distorted with a hum.

I was always more of a Dr. Ruth kinda guy (listening late at night in bed with headphones to Rock102 on Sunday night),
But if you were a teenager in the 80's & 90's in Southern Ontario, you were subjected to Sex with Sue!

W Network is showing a documentary on this icon of sex education.  Should be interesting!

I've always been fascinated with 3D.
I remember that broadcast of "Gorilla at Large" on Global in 1982, where you had to get the glasses from Mac's.
Then in the late 80's during Halloween, WGRZ did a 3D night with a Three Stooges movie.
Back in the early 90's, I bought a VHS tape of some 3D Sci-Fi movie from the 50's that had a lot of bubbles and a monster... and with 3D glasses packed in.  Didn't really work.

Well, fast forward to 2021, and I picked up a used 3D TV and Blu-ray player.  There are definitely some movies that just don't take advantage of 3D... but lots that do.
The 3D Rarities series from www.3darchive.com has some awesome Blu Ray films that really demonstrate how 3D should work on a tv.  Unfortunately, a lot of movies don't take advantage of their techniques.

Give it about 20 years and it will become popular again for a new generation.

Also, on a side note, I picked up a bunch of 33 1/3 records a few years back that were commercials for radio stations from the late 50's to the early 60's at a radio swap meet.  I especially like the Crown Diamond Paints jingle.

One warning, it's Mediafire so there might be a lot of pop-ups.
Enjoy!

Thick book with lots of photos.  433 pages!
I also noticed on the last page it states "Manufactured by Amazon.ca  Bolton, ON"

Steve Cichon always writes interesting books... he also wrote Irv! - Buffalo's Anchor Man.

Steve "gets" our fascination of broadcast history in the SOWNY area.

Well, that was interesting...
On Discovery's airing of Highway Through Hell last night (Sept 20, 2021), they were only playing the music audio track with Foley sound effects... the narration and dialog was missing.  (I noticed on Twitter they acknowledge they were having technical issues.)
Funny how much music and sound effects that that they add that you notice when dialog is missing... air breaks, crunching, door opening latches, chains rattling, whooshing, etc.

I don't recall The Art Shoppe in Toronto but I guess they just recently closed.

Enjoy your trip back to 1975!

+1 for "Our World".
Back in 1987, I got my first VCR for my birthday at the end of summer and was able to record the last 2 reruns of the show.  Well done show that was more interesting than Cosby.

In the early 2000s, there was a station in Cambridge (the name escapes me but they eventually turned into DaveFM).
One afternoon they broadcast that the next 3 people that showed up at their promotions van parked at the Walmart at the 401 and Hespler Rd. would receive a prize.
I was about 10 minutes down the 401 so I thought I'd stop by and see what was left.
When I arrived 10 minutes later, the promotions team said no one showed up so I could have everything.  (A CD, a branded car window shade, and a frisbee.). LOL.

Years later, my office co-worker programed all the Speed dial numbers on the office phone for Y108.  I won on The Wheel of Meat, lots of event tickets, and 100 Lotto 649 tickets.  (Only won $5.)

I've been listening to CBC Radio 1 out of Kitchener for a few years now and noticed that all of their content is broadcast in mono.  All the music that they play (Beatles, etc) is in mono, where if I switch over to the Toronto CBC, it's in Stereo.
Anyone else notice this (or care?)

A little bit odd... but back in the 80's on Sunday nights (one Sunday I'm pretty sure was NYE), I used to listen to The Sunday Funnies and Theatre of the Mind on CHUM-FM.
I could be wrong but I don't recall the shows ever being pre-empted for NYE celebrations.
(My family didn't celebrate NYE much in the 80's)

Good times.

I would stick BASF 90 minute Chrome tapes in my deck and hit record.  The sound quality was stellar for the time.

I noticed that in the morning Roger Christian would cut in between the automation reels.  Sounded almost out of place ...lol
