Hi RA,
I seem to remember it was Walt on the CBC feed.   To watch this event we schleped an old black and white TV from my grandparents up to the cottage at Catchacomma Narrows.  I rigged up a large old antenna on a piece of conduit pipe attached to the cottage and used some old brown two wire cable run to the TV.   We either received CHEX ch12 or CKVR ch 3 (or some repeater).  I had my sisters turn on the TV and I manually rotated the antenna until they screamed what channel looked the best.
As the picture was coming live from the moon, I went down to the dock to see a moonlit night and looked up to the skies at he moon itself to see what was thought to be a techno miracle.   Hard to fathom at the time!

Hi RA,
Just to chime in here, a few memories of CityPulse.
We beat CFTO during the last year of being at 99 Queen St. E.  Yes there was bubbly stuff for all, thanks to the format of The Price is Right.    There was no "outbreak" before CityPulse at 6.   It ran, Price is Right Credits, Station ID (5sec), CityPulse...  you kept your audience, very simple.
Now on the "The party's over memo"   Thanks for posting RA!
The real story is that a few weeks after poor old Karen Reid had to personally hand each CityPulser this memo, Hurlbut asked about 15 at random staffers into his office (I was one of them) and asked how his memo ended up on the walls of CBC Toronto.  He was floored that this would happen, but what did he expect?
I don't know about everyone else, but I thought we all busted our butts everyday to produce the best newscast going. Then CP24 came along and CityPulse all went downhill from there.
Thanks for sharing RA

Hi RA,
I was saddened to hear the news of David's passing.  What a lovely human being.
I cut many a story with David while he was at CityPulse.  He was from the analog days...you know, hand writing a script on a piece of lined paper.

A few stories that demonstrate the qualities of David.
He was kind enough to attend my first wife's funeral and we had several discussions about death, dying and the afterlife.  (He never "pushed" his religious convictions on me.)

After a press conference about (can't remember the exact event), he was in the newsroom writing his story and was visibly pissed off, (he never lost his cool, just this once) that the first question in the conference  went to a CBC reporter all the while he had his hand up first.   He felt slighted that he wasn't taken seriously, and that he and CityPulse were playing second fiddle to the Corp.

David wrote for me a fantastic letter of recommendation that opened the door to becoming a high school teacher in communications technology at the TDSB.

RIP David

Hi RA,
Back some years ago, in fact at midnight on my 21st birthday May 2, 1976 I started my first radio shift at CFPA  1230 in Thunder Bay. That's right, no voice tracking then, just a crappy old board, headsets that came from the Titanic, 2 turntables, 3 cart machines, a classic Ampex reel to reel tape machine and a 635A mic. Just me and a smoke encrusted studio. I was hired right out of school (Confederation College RTA) and Jim Parker, the owners son, had me start the overnight shift because someone quit (wonder why).  I only had to work one week and was promoted to the 6-12 shift 6 days a week plus Sundays was 3:30 to midnight.   I think I was paid $460 a month and thought I'd died and gone to heaven, I was on the radio!  First song played after the news, that I read, (rip and read BN with single spacing to save $$$, as was the Parker's only goal) was the Bellamy Bros "Let your love Flow". Just remember it all started at a 1,000 watt radio station! 250 at night of course.

When I worked at CityPulse, BT was off only on the stat days, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
There was no CityPulse Tonight on Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day had only CityPulse Tonight airing. Skeleton staff, but time and half plus a day off in lieu.   AND we had Christmas dinner provided for us, usually from Coleman's Deli, with the best corned beef sandwiches!

Back when I first started in the biz,(1976) my first gig was slave labour at CFPA radio in Thunder Bay, 6 to midnight 6 days a week.  And on the sixth day 3:30 to midnight.  Every day at 6 pm it was Back to the Bible. At 6:30 it was another canned religious program that started with boat sound effects and that's the only thing I remember about it!   On Sunday, a local Baptist preacher got into the act with his show and some of the time he talked about circumcision.  No kidding!  I'm 21 years old, what was with this circumcision stuff.  I think I lead a sheltered life.

Hi RA,
Since I worked at CityPulse for 17 years, maybe one day I'll get the typing fingers working overtime, but first more about 2 newserials that I cut with Peter.
San Bartolo.   Peter and cameraperson Max Trotta in 1985? flew to Nicaragua to document the building of an elementary school by a group of Toronto citizens.  It was so hot there that Max lost 30 lbs in 3 weeks.
The other was the 50th anniversary of D-Day in 1994.  One of Peter's greatest series and as a former British paratrooper he loved anything to do with the military. I can't remember who was the cameraperson,  but I do remember the heart and soul that Peter put into the series.

Hi RA,
Sad news indeed. A crusty old guy that had a heart of gold.  It was always interesting cutting a "Silverman Helps" story.  I had the pleasure of working with Peter and his producer Terry O'Keefe on many occasions. I can vividly remember Peter and Terry going at it, having heated arguments about the pros and cons of a story in the edit bay with me stuck in the middle as the sparks were flying.  Peter also fronted "CityBiz" for CityPulse Tonight.  Peter used to always refer to me as "short ass"!   I never took it personally, because his bark was worse than his bite.

May his memory be a blessing.

Yes RA,
It is true, CityPulse Tonight did not air one night (don't remember the exact date, at 299) because a credible threat was phoned into the hot line.  Thankfully it was recorded, and the police were called.  The accent used on the call was scary. We had to wait outside for the police dog to show up as it was at another call.
Before that in 1985 back in the old building at 99, there was also a credible bomb threat phoned in by someone claiming to be Armenian, during the same time the city was being shut down. We all stood in the parking lot across from the station and waited for the all clear that happened at 5pm.  Needless to say, nothing was cut for the 6. In one hour we cut the entire show! Editing rocked that day!

Hi Radiowiz,
Yes the trip up in the elevator was an experience everyday.   Rist was the master of plays on words, spooky things, and creating fun stories.  It's too bad CityPulse lost that creative edge when CP24 signed on. It was the death nail of the real CityPulse.
The elevator in the "old" building was also used to inform employees of their sudden termination!  Read it first in the elevator, find out later from your boss. So...there's a little truth to the "Elevator from Hell"!

Hi RA,
Here goes the story....
I was called "the Rammer" by Gord Haines, the ND at the time.  This name appeared on a memo posted to the whole newsroom at 99 Queen St East. This designation was given to me because Gord felt that the editing dept need a person who could "ram" though stories to air no matter what.  I had only been at the station for a little over a year and I must have made a great impression on the powers that be.  It pissed off the older more experienced editors in the shop. Needless to say, the name stuck for a short while, but things started to change.  I really detested that name, but as for "the Foxer" here's how this nickname was born.
Greg Manzuik was called "Gregger' on the air, Dave Rutherford (sports producer) was called "Ruther' so naturally I was next, and  suddenly "the Foxer" was born. Even to this very day I bump into old CityPulsers that still greet me that way.  Many others in the newsroom had nicknames as well that weren't part of their real names like  "too tall","pearl",and  "stats" .   It was really the use of these nicknames at work that made CityPulse feel like a family, the names weren't used in a mean or malicious manner ,it was meant as a sign of love and support for one another as you would a family member.   I understand that this feeling has all but disappeared in a very corporate world, all in the name of profit.    As the TV saying goes, "stay tuned".

Hi RA and LorneH,
I know I'm a little late for comment, but here goes.
Kevin tried very hard to get to CityPulse while working at CKVR, in fact he auditioned while we were in the old building, before BT ever took off.  He sat in the late Glen Coles' newer assignment desk and did the audition, like a "streetbeat take".  As BT flourished, I can vividly remember Kevin and one of the production crew (I think Dave was his name)both lived in Barrie and they commuted daily through the worst snowstorms southbound on the 400. This provided a golden opportunity to record some of the most spectacular pile ups known the OPP and give Sgt Cam Woolly his launch to stardom after he retired. It was always the lead in the news packs because NO other outlet had the viz.   Kevin's personal ambition is what made him successful.  Sometimes he could drive you crazy, but he always thanked you and made you feel part of the team.  I have to agree with Lorne, a great talent and now Rogers is facing cuts "Everywhere".

This was in the old building 99 Queen East.  When we moved to 299, we still had one Live Eye but a few years later, got another one, so Chris started co-ordinating both for the 6.  As for CityPulse Tonight, it was up to editing, usually me or others to aim the live eye.

Hi RA,
Oh the "Dead Eye" as Gord used to call it. Two of the greatest guys ran it,  Brian Dean and Bryan Cook (Cookie), I think that's what their first names were if my 65 year old memory serves me. They knew this monster inside and out, probably better then Ron Reid did! If there was a location in Toronto that could see the Bank of Montreal building, then it was a go.  If you were downtown in the shadow of the B of M these crafty guys could bounce the signal off another skyscraper and back to the receiver, no kidding. They used a left or right circular polarization to angulate the signal. I bet they were great pool sharks!
Longest range shots were to Niagara on the Lake, Caledon Hills and the Pickering Nuke plant. It was even rented by American Broadcasters once in a while for live hits on their morning shows long before BT.
Driven into the ground, but what a piece of cutting edge technology for its time!

Hi RA,
Let me chime in here.....
Natalie came from CJCL Metro 1430 before she worked at City.

How about Barbra Laskin, she was the first story I ever cut as a jr. editor at CityPulse.  Very nice to work with as I recall, because it wasn't too long after she went stateside I think to WNYW?

Or how about Terilyn Joe or TJ as we used to call her.   What a mouth on that gal!   So she rushes in with raw tape in hand to cut a story, in all the confusion that was CityPulse Tonight, somehow the raw tape gets mixed up with a voice over tape and she accidentally bulk erases the raw instead of the voice over tape. Oops!  Or just before going to air she's in the women's bathroom (right next to editing) prepping her hair and looks at me and says "I have to get rid of this JF look Foxer" What's the JF look? Just Fucked. Oh please, get the soap out!  Thought she ended up at KGO. If anybody talks to her, ask her about the "plum sauce", she'll die laughing.

And last but not least, Anita Kartalija, I think she came from CKO. I don't think she got along with management, but look who's talking now, she's working at RBC Financial, and laughing all the way to the bank!  Good for you Anita!
