As someone who personally enjoys numerous programs produced by PBS network stations as well as national network ones such as Nova, I seriously hope this trade relations disaster doesn't inflict them any significant consequences.

Besides my personal concerns with fad-exploiting people just taking advantage of Canadian patriotism and "buying Canadian" as "the current thing", there's also the issue of possible collateral damage inflicted against entities that are not at all involved in the politics behind the initial tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, and they could be commercial, non-commercial in the case of local PBS and NPR network stations and possibly even charitable.

These are very unfortunate things to think about. Staying more strictly within the topic of broadcasting, particularly at the local level, WNED provides those who are able to pick up its over-the-air signal with a total of three channels multiplexed on to its single transmitter. There's the main PBS network station WNED itself on 17.1, Create; a 24/7 arts & crafts channel on 17.2, and PBS Kids; a 24/7 young children's channel on 17.3. Many other PBS stations have a similar arrangement. There's also a full simulcast of WNED 94.5 FM as an audio-only channel that for some reason is mapped as 31.10. WNED provides all of that with a much smaller proportion of public (taxpayer) funding than CBC, CBC Radio-Canada (French), TVO, or any of the other provincial public service networks.

Each of our public broadcasters provide only a single program service or "channel" and over-the-air coverage is much more limited than those of many PBS network stations boasting decent networks of re-transmitters. Thus, PBS is entirely morally worthy of continued viewer donations and I would support the sponsors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and local PBS stations. I hope others agree.

Can’t figure out why WNED doesn’t carry World sub-channel. PBS outlets in Erie and Roc

May 14, 1948 WBEN signed on to viewers in Western New York and the Toronto area on channel 4. For the first seven months of operation they were affilliated with NBC. In January 1949, they became a primary CBS affilliate. Two local shows I remember were Popeye's Playhouse with Captain Mike Marion and Buttons the Cabin Boy and Meet The Millers. During summer vacation I always watched Popeye at 9am weekdays. My mom would always watch the Millers at 1pm for new recipes and cooking tips.

I remember Santa’s Workshop with “Forgetful” the elf was shown during December. Maybe in Captain Mike’s slot.

Wasn't CKVR a CBC affiliate back then?  Part of the plan must have been disaffiliating and going independent.

Jack Miller at the Spectator covered these stories in detail. Seems to me at one time Jack reported that CKVR wanted to replay CBC prime time programming the next day in the morning and afternoon.

Does anybody have access to those Soec columns?

Quite a few years ago, during one of the four times I was at CHML, quick hits which featured conversations with the local Environment Canada experts (careful, now) would become part of our daily drive-time menu. Prior to that becoming fact, a couple of us wound up at the Mt. Hope airport to discuss what the technical terms in the forecasts -- 30 per cent chance, etc. -- really meant.

We came away with a pretty good overall picture. Most important:

1. They really didn't want to commit to anything beyond what would happen the next day.

2. The possibility of change became greater the further down the line you went (e.g. 7-day forecast).

But 3. The key to remember, and the reason that we don't always get what they say, is the Great Lakes
make this one of the toughest areas in the world to do accurate weather forecasts.

That was back in the '80s. Sound like this week?

The World of Weather, with meteorologist John Wingfield. 7:55, 12:40, and 6:15 daily on CHML.

Low power is what it is although Bill Hepburn in Grimsby says he gets it all the time: http://dxinfocentre.com/pix/22-Toronto.JPG There are people regularly receiving Star Ray fair distances but I think they are all using antenna amplifiers.

Since the latest repack the station has less interference. In the east end of Toronto analog 22 went off the air in Oshawa and in the west end TVO in Kitchener did not move to RF 22.

Rabbitears.info has a good map of potential Star Ray TV reception: https://www.rabbitears.info/contour.php?appid=0000ca1ada0099999990099999999000&site=1&dma=N&map=Y&contour=N&lppc=N&int=N&pop=N&incpop=&excpop=&z1=N&nrqz=N&lprw=N&head=Y&asrn=&extras=&cir=&circen=

Citytv on channel 79 would have been difficult to pick up anyway due to the high frequency.

If I pick up anything on RF 22, it's WXXI and subs from Rochester. Never a peep from anything else.

Seems to me Cherington started by doing the 6 o’clock news on CHML and then “Nightline” from 9-11. Then a coordinated programming change with CHCH moved him to 6:30-9 right after the major news, weather (The World of Weather with meteorologist John Wingfield), and sports and a new title—Action Line. (Same time Perc Allen moved “Open Line” from 1:30-2:30 to right after the 12:30 p.m. newscast with Lloyd Dafoe) When Action Line started airing earlier, Cherington was free to go over to CHCH after the radio show ended and deliver the 11 o’clock news on TV.
