SOWNY » JOE SCHWARCZ weighs in » February 25, 2020 1:06 pm |
Schwarcz had a program simultaneously on Toronto's CFRB and Montreal's CJAD back in the S. Kowch era. After it was cancelled, Schwarcz' name arose from time to time here in the SOWNY forum as an example of quality programming that was sacrificed in favor of mindless infomercials. The Toronto Star (not exactly Scientific American magazine) has an interesting piece in today's Life section, in which Schwarcz is asked to comment on various so-called miracle supplements from arsenic to garlic to protect us from the coronavirus. (Hint: he sez it's all bullshyt)
Interesting stuff (long time since I've posted anything positive about the Toronto Star)

Sullivan did not host Elvis' Sept 9/56 appearance because he was in a head-on collision while driving his Mercury passenger car, (a show sponsor) at 1:30 a.m. the previous month. Alcohol was said to have been a factor (and people said Elvis was a bad influence, shame on Ed)

Tony Burman relates a hilarious story in his weekly column in the Insight section of today's TorStar:
Margaret Thatcher had little use for the BBC or the CBC and so Burman (then CBC) was surprised in 1984 to receive an "acceptance of a request" to interview her. They had not requested an interview but showed up anyhow. Just before it was to proceed they discovered that her handlers had screwed up and thought it was CTV that arrived.
They went ahead anyhow even cutting to a commercial break. Gotta give the CBC credit for thinking fast on their feet, eh?

This thread began w. a comment that Canadians should be able to catch the CFL championship with an OTA antenna, then attracted comment to the effect that "free" is still too expensive for Cdn football. Personally I thought the Hamilton/Winnipeg game was at least as entertaining as the NFL's Buffalo/Denver match earlier in the afternoon.
