SOWNY » What TV Shows Did You Like as a Kid? » April 14, 2024 2:24 pm

Growing up in Barrie, especially before CKVR signed on, we could get all the Buffalo stations (WKBW,WBEN,WGR) thus I could enjoy both Dave & Tom on their versions of the "Rocketship 7" show plus Capt. Kangaroo and I have vague memories of Howdy Doody. Plus Daktari, Razzle Dazzle (Alan Hammel), Kiddo the Clown, Uncle Bobby, all the Saturday morning cartoon, Sea Hunt, Sky King, Have Gun Will Travel, Uncle Milty & Make Mine Country(CKVR), Hogan Heroes, and all the 60's comedies plus many Brit comedies like Benny Hill, On the Buses and later Monty Python. Oh such a misspent youth traded in for an adulthood in radio.

SOWNY » It Was 60 Years Ago Today… » February 7, 2024 12:38 pm

Yes, the Beatles performed on the night before my birthday (what a gift) in '64. The next day the kids were all talking about the Sullivan show at school. Later on,  I actually saw "David" Jones at the Shubert Theatre in NYC performing as the "Artful Dodger" in Oliver. I have the show's program in my treasure trove of artifacts but it's too large to post. Stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel where I developed my love of NY Cheesecake, the best. The passion for Radio days with its music and "personalities" came not long after.

any and all sports betting ads, which run incessantly on Sportsnet and TSN.  I could live the rest of my life without ever betting on sports, or knowing the "odds" on a particular game.  The Canadian sports networks are addicted to gambling advertising $, even though the Sportsnet and TSN packages now cost $50 per month (retail).   They have gone to "in program" advertorials giving you betting info as well.  A pox on them all.

I'm all for freedom of speech however when your freedom interrupts mine then we have a problem. Yes, I can mute the commercials or change the channel or heaven forbid just drop watching hockey but that just isn't right. If it was a socially redeeming issue (human rights etc), than yes we should have a decent discussion but come on, it's gambling where talking about. Those that wage on games know how and where to do it. Why does the general populace need to be subjected to these inane/incessant advertisements that interrupt our enjoyment of our favourite sport? Maybe it's time they do what they did to the cigarette company's years ago. Just a though

How about Rat Patrol, Sky King, Daktari, Johnny Quest (cartoon) Have Gun Will Travel, Kiddo A Clown (Trevor Evans in Toronto) Make Mine Country (Barrie) Razzle Dazzle (Al Hammel). God, I'm getting old.

It's annoying seeing ads for Alberta that have nothing to do with Ontario.

It's more annoying being in Alberta (or anywhere else in Canada) and being force fed ALL those TV ads for betting apps which are only for Ontarians.

SOWNY » Stingray Bringing Back AM Sports Radio To Edmonton » August 14, 2023 6:51 pm

What's the old saying, you can't make a silk purse out of sow's ear. I've been to the mountain folks (PD/AM drive/sales) and the 1440 frequency has not been a viable commodity. The only thing that was worth salt was the R.J. Tompkins Ukrainian show.
Locals don't listen since Edmonton signals bombard Wetaskiwin. Edmontonians won't since the 1440 signal doesn't cover the capital. I even tried to get the owners to agree re-apply for a "Christian" format before there was even such a thing going in Canada. However the CRTC could NOT give me enough answers to do the paperwork because THEY didn't have the answers. Well at least Jackie knows how to program (CFCW) and whether the staff works in Wetaskiwin or remotely in Edmonton the station will make a minor splash on the air-waves, like the Edmonton Elks this year BUT their best hope is streaming and Stingray
Sometimes, like Mama Carleson wanted, the (radio) station was meant to be a tax right-off.

SOWNY » Rogers Tests AI Program That Could Replace On Air Talent. Hear It Here » February 25, 2023 12:54 pm

If I worked for Bell Media, Harvard, Virgin, or iHeart Radio I would be very afraid. I was there when computers and then VT came in and told countless people they would be replace by this new technology. It will first start in the smaller markets in the weaker dayparts. Imagine having a great voice returning in the overnight hours spewing local content. I can see the evil glean in the "bean counters" eyes but the "local content" can now be sold to both the CRTC and advertisers UNLESS the CRTC somehow legislates that a certain percentage of "on-air" broacasting MUST be HUMAN. Wouldn't this bring up an interesting human rights dilemma. hmmm
Just some of the things for members of the big yellow board to ponder. Oh BTW, I've been listening to the demo for over an hour and it sounds quite good, better then most human stations. As stated, you should be worried, Nano Nano

Although it was number 1 way back when, "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks. Blah, made me cringe every time I HAD (MAPL/CRTC regs) to play it. That's the only one I truly hated. I could tolerate the rest because ultimately, the song was someone's favourite tune (including SiS); and you can't piss off your P1's.

=12pxIf you watch the Blue Jays on Sportsnet Pacific or West you will see some different ads than the Ontario feed. Often these are for stores or lotteries only found in Western Canada.  I have even seen ads for a few western radio stations on Pacific and West.
okay trade ya, your Doug Ford for for our Danielle Smith.

SOWNY » Does anyone actually get any broadcast journalism training anymore? » November 13, 2022 8:59 am

electronic media has to only look in the mirror as to why it is losing listeners/views.  I'm tired of listening to "babies" telling me about life and "my era music".  There are bona fide broadcasters residing in the community (who could blow the doors off these people) there maybe driving bus or working at golf courses because of corporate decisions, youth movements, ("we're going in a different direction") and lack of respect for quality who were let go from stations.  There don't seem to be "farm team" radio stations these days, where you build/develop personalities/newscasters much like, back in the day, you'd have CKBB used by CHUM, (I know, I dating myself) however when you got to "the show" you would have someone who know the basics. That's my 2cents

SOWNY » CTV Toronto strikes again » November 12, 2022 9:10 pm

Welcome to life in rural Alberta, Lethbridge specifically. The weekday desker continually boots well-known names on numerous occasions and seems ignorant to that fact. Obviously the producer doesn't monitor the recording nor care to correct this faux paux
While the whole piece is recorded an hour before airing in Calgary before hitting in the air, you would think a check on a pronunciation could be sourced from a colleague or the producer could ask for an edit or re- record.
I hope our future broadcasters aren't watching these stations since they don't exemplify what broadcasting is truly all about. But again, that's just my 2cents.

SOWNY » Global's Weekend Weather Forecast Package Is Infuriating » November 7, 2022 12:34 pm

Agree with all comments but what is even more infuriating is the Weather channel going to regional forecasts in smaller markets. Communities that once had 2 minutes of specific in depth coverage now get short 15 second rotational useless info-hits lumped in with 3 other areas. The Weather Channel has gone from a must see to a who cares in our household.

SOWNY » N.B. Radio Station Break & Enter A Sign Of The Times » January 3, 2022 7:46 pm

In the early '80's I arrived for my morning shift around 4:30, only to find the station had been broken into. Thank goodness the only things missing were electric typewriters however it was a mad dash to clean up the control room which was somewhat ransacked, all while organizing the news teletype for RnR's and phoning the OPP to report the incident. Back then the station ran 6a-Midnight. And "yes" people used their AM radio to wake them up with "O Canada" at 5:58a. I know since I did some sound checks "on-air" early one morning only to receive a call from a listener who was laughing at the early sounds coming from their speaker. Gotta love the biz, at least back then. Ciao

SOWNY » What is/was your preferred headphone set? » May 12, 2021 9:57 am

cheap but solidly built with a good cable. You would NOT wear the studio cans (who knew where they had been). You had your own with most going through a couple of pair a year. These were for work, not ëasy listening, meaning: they were dropped, kicked, thrown and generally suffered abuse. Station engineer would set you up with a good pair for home use.

Agree whole heartedly with MJ V's comment. FoxSports seem to have great broadcast crews, especially FSN with Anthony LaPanta and AltitudeTV in Denver with Marc Moser. But they are not ashamed to play up any Canadian connections they have on their crew.

When you lived 60 miles north of Trawna, I have to say CHUM & CFTR for the music and personalities but late nights (mid-6a), when CHUM powered down, it would be WBZ (1030) out of Boston. I know it's not top 40 but Larry Glick (& I know there are Glicknicks still around) was an entertainer and personality who created theatre of the mind every time he was on the air. At least we can access airchecks to rekindle our love for these influencers on our life.

On second thought, isn't "iHeart" an oxymoron? You can't have heart and gut the lifeblood of a station. This move was done by the smart people who have brains. But then again as the Tin Man said: "brains do not make one happy and happiness is the best thing in the world."

SOWNY » iHeart Radio U.S. Goes On "Employee Dislocation" Firing Spree » January 15, 2020 12:45 pm

When you take the "humanity" (a living being) out of radio, you lose that personal connection with the listener. I'm a radio dinosaur, when social media connections supersede the landline and face-to-face to interact with listeners becomes management's mantra, its time to sign off. For most with well over a quarter C in the biz, it was a good ride and I pine for the days when I could project and hit the post. Classic hit stations are too limited in their playlists and the announcers are too far removed from the music. Nothing locally that really grabs me. I want to remain loyal to terrestrial however after a "Sirius" test, I must admit satellite radio satisfies my listening desires. So where am I going with this or is it a ramblin' man spewing. No, it's a cry out to management/ownership to program to those in their senior years. Those who valued radio and the enjoyment and memories they received. Seniors are becoming the largest segment of the population and have the $ to support advertisers (are your listening Sales). But as management has told me, it's an interesting idea. Oh well. As a true Trawna jock once said, "come get me mother".

Why do we have copy the Excited States? It's somewhat embarrassing in that the second place team receives $200 worth of board games and a hearty handshake. At least we can hold our heads high in that the Yanks copied "Dragon's Den" Maybe the US could reboot "Littlest Hobo", the Beachcombers", "Reach for the Top" or "the Forrest Rangers"

SOWNY » An Observation About Local Radio On Christmas Day » December 27, 2019 1:19 pm

In the "cookie cutter" small markets, there's no local news and if any announcing, it's all VT's. Many have syndicated programs or run a jukebox. News preps for this time weeks before with stories to run pre and post Christmas. Stations rely on their social media platforms to update audience. Unless you're in the major markets, the sad fact is, there is little use being live.

SOWNY » Listeners Outraged Over Threat To Their Favourite Radio Station » April 6, 2018 7:36 pm

I too am a "Glick-nick" and still a member of his long-time digital tribute club. Bottom line for listeners, go after the station's advertisers. Tell them, listeners will boycott any business that advertises with the station when it flips to iHeart. We can't roll back the clock to when BZ ruled the night with Guy Manella & Calling All Sports Jerry Williams talk show and Larry Glick's all night get-together. P1's are pee o'd   Radio needs listeners but radio is also a business, and like any business they need money to operate. So tell the business people where the buck is going and it's not with them IF BZ crashes.
