Would You Keep Broadcasting If You Only Had Weeks To Live? This Man Is

His name is Johnnie Walker and he's been a DJ on the BBC for decades. He's been told by his doctors that he only has a few weeks to live and is bedridden and on oxygen. Yet he continues to do his weekly Sunday radio show on the Beeb, despite his condition. And it's further cemented his bond with listeners.

"The reality that he will one day present his final show is not lost on him, and Johnnie has said he plans to be more “sentimental” about his song choices as that sad day approaches.

“I’m not yet at the stage where I’ve become sentimental about my choice of records. When I realise that I’m broadcasting my very last few shows, it might happen then.”

After a career spanning almost 60 years, he remains determined not to retire despite his illness, quipping that he “needs the money."

I'm not sure I would be that dedicated to staying on the air if my last few weeks were being spent in agony. Yet, he seems to have not only resigned himself to his fate, it also ironically may be one of the reasons he's still clinging to life. We never got to hear him on this side of the pond, but he sounds like a pretty amazing guy.

Re: Would You Keep Broadcasting If You Only Had Weeks To Live? This Man Is

ABSOLUTELY! For you quarter century club members or above, you know radio is a calling. It's in your blood. Only the select few know what we've put into this vocation. Most would never do it for theirs but we willing do so without hesitation.  Radio's still my mistress and anytime I can jump behind a mic anywhere, I will.
But at 70, established and with an incurable disease, I know I'm not going to those next call signs. I'm just glad to see some "warriors" sharing on the big yellow board. Ciao
