SOWNY » Corus execs get bonuses... » Yesterday 8:20 pm

Yeah I know bonuses are a legal construct but the last line is particularly damning:

"Corus added that “management also furthered considerable efforts to right-size the Company for a more sustainable future, achieving stated targets related to headcount reductions by the end of the fiscal year.

What's the takeaway other than the Execs were rewarded for cutting jobs?

SOWNY » Mark Jan. 10th On Your Broadcast Calendar » Yesterday 12:51 pm

Lol - I suggest these Execs don't show their face around the office much. The people still there are sure to be even more upset.

SOWNY » It's Not Your Imagination. TV Show Seasons Are Shorter Than Ever » Yesterday 11:50 am

In the pre-streaming era, some of the "landmark HBO" shows (Oz, Sopranos) only ran 8-13 episode seasons.

I do prefer the term "series" over "season". It's more accurate since there are now multiple television seasons per calendar year. Hearing Jeff Probst proclaim "Survivor Season 47" always sounded weird/wrong to me and I believe the latest promos have dropped the word "season", and it sounds cleaner being promoted as "Survivor 47".

One time Q107 PD Dave Farough used to do a live on-air shift on Dec 25 - but that was back when PDs ran one station.

I am wondering if the Hamilton management positions will be taken over by someone else, or do they also fall under the umbrella of the "Kitchener/Guelph Cluster".

I've heard rumblings that the Hamilton cluster will be shut down. 95.3 will be run out of Toronto and 107.9 is moving to London.

No rumblings or "will bes" about it, those FM moves happened when Corus shuttered CHML in August. There are no people left in Hamilton per se.

The Ottawa PD is a rock star and a true talent - easily one of my favourite people in the industry today.

SOWNY » Would You Listen To A Station With This Format? » December 19, 2024 5:56 pm

Wasn't block programming a necessity in the early days of radio, perhaps in smaller communities/markets? I think there are some stations in the UK/Europe that may still use this non-format format.

Hey mic’em, Hollywood Suite is running their Christmas free preview at the moment and have some decent movies to select from, my PVR has been working overtime! Check them out, they’re commercial-free to boot, I’m even thinking of subscribing.

Hollywood Suite also has an Irish crime drama called Kin available. They only have S1 on offer but the show is decent and has a great cast.

SOWNY » Why An Adele Song Has Been Banned From Radio & Streaming Worldwide » December 19, 2024 12:29 pm

Banning something globally doesn't feel like something an "ordinary everyday judge" should be able to do.

Would be interesting if somebody poked the bear and played the Adele song just to see what happens.

The television version of Police Squad! is pound-for-pound funnier than the movies could ever hope to be.

Might be just me but in the era of Google, these trivia shows seem, well...trivial. It's no longer about what obscure tidbit you might happen to know but how fast you can look it up while waiting on hold.

SOWNY » Who Owns The Title "Ask The Experts?" » December 16, 2024 9:09 am

I've always thought "Ask The Experts" to be a bit of a lame umbrella term for client-based programming. Come up with a proper show name instead, even if it's a one-off.

The CRTC doesn't (or at least didn't used to) particarly care what a radio station did after midnight. Cancon doesn't apply from midnight to 6 am, for instance.

This, I knew. I used to produce an overnight music show. IIRC, we ran CanCon at 20% just to keep some degree of consistency.

I was thinking more along the lines of adult-targeted programming. Sue Johanson's "Sunday Night Sex Show", as an example; but that show was an outlier, it's not like each station offered up their own slate of such programming that I can recall. Which is how I got here in the first place lol.

Of course it could be argued that a talk station is adult-targeted all day long. I suppose a music station could "leave in all the swears" in tunes after a certain hour.

This reminds me...has radio ever had what television calls a "watershed hour"? As a kid, I could get exposed to all kinds of theoretically unsuitable tv programming after a certain time but radio never seemed to go too far down that road in my experience.

I'm not sure who that new imaging voice is but he's incredibly dull. True, there's not much personality you can inject into "You're listening to the Ben Mulroney Show," but somehow the guy they chose is so listless and lacking any emotion or life, it makes you question why you're listening. What an odd choice.

The old intro gang they used was much, much better.

I had the chance to hear this imaging today and I agree.

He sure did. Michael Monty was a good man.

I was fortunate to "debut" (after college radio) during my internship on a random overnight at Q107. Nothing serious, just bantering with the host at the time.

My last CRT TV bought in 2001 or so cost me nearly $1000. I think it was a 31" screen.

When I upgraded to an HDTV in the mid-2010s, it cost me less than $500.

On topic, I've seen Perkins make unforced errors repeatedly but I'll forgive this one. Spanner is almost "too British".

I'm guessing nobody gets to review the copy before going to air, which I cannot fathom.

As for the Orion problem - a good guest will pronounce the word correctly after hearing the host bungle it and an even better host will pick up on that and adjust their own faux pas.

(Now I want to hear today's newspeople pronounce "faux pas")
