TSN Cutting Overdrive to 2 Hours

Re: TSN Cutting Overdrive to 2 Hours

From the article:

The trio will be on live from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., sticking to the regular start time, with the 6-7 hour shifting to what the network is calling OverDrive replay.

A replay from a show that just aired is an interesting approach to programming.

Re: TSN Cutting Overdrive to 2 Hours

Sounds similar to what iHeart does on The Nightshift with Shane Hewitt, which airs on CFRB. His show runs from 7-10 PM weekdays, but the last hour is a replay of either previous segments from that evening or pieces that ran earlier in the week. A bit cheesy, but I think the logic is no one stays tuned for the entire show or people who weren't listening before are tuning in for the final hour.

Either way, it doesn't look good on them, in my opinion.

Re: TSN Cutting Overdrive to 2 Hours

Who wants to listen to something that just aired an hour earlier. My personal belief is that I believe with TSN 1050 and Overdrive's ratings being so low, that it's a cost cutting decision. I heard that the show is recently available on YouTube and Instagram so, that may be their future.

Do you think they're paid by the hour?

Re: TSN Cutting Overdrive to 2 Hours

Watched a bit of the show today.  Bryan Hayes claimed that they still had the option of Overdrive having a third hour live from 6-7pm.  This would be when a big trade happens later in the day or some other late breaking sports story warrants the extra hour.  The hosts seem to be putting emphasis on the Youtube channel for the program.  Maybe ratings aren't great on CHUM but on TV they are often in the top 5 trending shows.  So on TSN they likely do alright.

Yeah, was wondering how this would meaningfully cut costs.

My guess is they're having trouble filling three hours a day, every day. Less is more, and all.

Great insight, Stan.🤔 Of course they're not however the ratings are down so like every other media company, I'm sure it was a cost cutting decision. You have a union mindset!

It was a rhetorical questions. If you're referring to 1050's ratings, they don't matter....... Overdrive is a TV show first, a podcast second, and a radio show third. So perhaps it was not a cost-cutting measure, but rather a cost-avoidance measure. "We want a raise!" "No..... but we'll shorten your workday by an hour so you can have dinner with your family"

The only decent show on there. Otherwise, it's a wasteland.

Re: TSN Cutting Overdrive to 2 Hours

Toronto Star guest columnist Jonah Sigel opines this is just another symptom of radio's overall decline.

"Make no mistake, the strategic move is as much about survival as growth. Radio ratings have been on a slow decline for years as podcasts and social media changed the game. Today’s fan doesn’t need to catch “OverDrive” live. They can scroll a best-of clip on TikTok late at night or listen to the podcast version the next morning."

Even ‘OverDrive,’ TSN’s flagship show and the gold standard in Canadian sports radio, is subject to change

TSN1200 in Ottawa airs Overdrive at night.  But, most of the content is stale dated.
