"like kicking a puppy" is a good analogy here. His vocals never appealed to me, but a lot of people found something there.

I suppose this question could be asked of many Canadian artists, but how big would they have become here without Cancon regulations?

RadioActive wrote:

OK, I also have a confession to make. And it's like kicking a puppy. But I never liked Downie's voice and didn't think he was a very good singer. So you're not alone.

I know that I'm in the minority among Canadians in feeling this way, but I've never understood the appeal of this band.

I always found (and still do) their music to be very tedious.

I know this is pedantic, but when reporting on an accident or other traffic infraction, the statement "Travelling at a high rate of speed" is meaningless and is very very grating.

Properly expressed, it's "rate of change of" something.

Rate of change of position is speed and rate of change of speed is acceleration.

Everytime I hear this on air, I hear a chorus of my university physics professors immediately correcting this.

It brings to mind the "New Kids on the Rock" prank by Scruff Connors at HTZ-FM from the early 1990s:
https://nauticazinger.wordpress.com/2016/12/18/top-5-scruff-connors-moments/

My recollection from listening at the time is that he never said "New Kids on the Block", but "New Kids on the Rock", a reference to the large rock etched with the station's logo on the lawn in front of the station.

That, coupled with the fact the NKOTB was no where near HTZ's playlist should have been a clue that something funny was going on (funny strange or funny haha depending on your point of view).

I suggest "I Believe in Father Christmas" by Greg Lake.

And speaking of Greg Lake, "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" by the TransSiberian Orchestra (mentioned above, and is a banger of a Christmas track) always bring to mind "I bet this is what it would sound like if Emerson, Lake, and Palmer did Christmas music."

Interesting that they have Rita Celli listed as host of "Ontario Today".

It's been a long time - two+ years perhaps - since she's been on-air.

Presumably she's not coming back as the current host, Amanda Pfeffer, doesn't introduce herself as "sitting in for Rita Celli" as the people subbing for Gill Deacon on "Here and Now" do, as she deals with long-covid.

Sure, the people who love him will love that clip as it shows him "putting a liberal in his place", but I don't see it endearing him to anyone sitting on the proverbial fence.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm actually replacing a many years-old iPod Nano whose battery has diminshed capacity.

I still use it to stream via Bluetooth to the car stereo, with it plugged into the power port.

@The Weed mentioned their Android phone has FM radio - I was under the impression that all Canadian cell providers have the FM function disabled.

This topic is peripherally related to the theme of this board, so please indulge me.

I'm looking for recommendations for MP3 players, with the following features (if possible):
* FM tuner
* playlist - ability to import these from Windows Media Player or similar application would be nice (creating a playlist on the player itself is very tedious)
* bluetooth would be nice (for connection to ear buds or car stereo)
* long battery life - "long" is, I realize, vague. A battery that doesn't suffer severe drop-off in life after a year's use would be nice (my recent Sandisk and Sony players have suffered from this)

Thanks,
Ron

I was on day 4 of a new job in Kitchener.

Traffic was barely moving, as the lights were out across the city.

I was brand new to the city and barely knew my way around so finding less busy routes that would get me closer to home was a challenge. A 20 minute commute turned into about an hour.

Our power came back on at about 2 AM the next morning.

They are carrying several seasons (series) of "Utopia", a satirical show about the "National Building Authority" (a government organization tasked with large infrastructure projects).

It captures office politics and stereotypical government waste perfectly.

Netflix Canada carried series 1 and 2 several years ago under the name "Dreamland."

I highly recommend it.

How's your cell reception?  In 10 years it should be 5G and you'll be able to stream it in higher quality than FM.

I don't know if streaming radio like this (via cell) is a viable option for most due to cost of data.

As mentioned somewhere above, Triumph's stage show was a spectacle and very, very loud (saw it twice).

I've also had the fortune of seeing Rik Emmett as a sole artist twice in acoustic shows. He's an exceptional guitarist and pretty good singer in a non-arena setting.

I could probably get by pretty well without them, but the sound level in a lot of programs seems to swing wildly from "a whisper to a scream", so to speak.

Out of respect for my neighbours, I keep the volume down a bit so I can pick up the dialogue without having the volume too high.

I wonder how much this will affect their bottom line though.

Normally (traditionally, I guess) higher ratings would lead to higher advertising rates but as I understand it, the majority of Fox's revenue comes carriage fees and not ads.

As well, has't Carlson's show been lacking in advertisers as there are few entities that want to be associated with him?

This seems to be a thing with sportscasters - their own cute/unique way of naming something. "Pots" for goals in hockey, "ribbies" for RBIs in baseball, etc.

I've always thought it sounded a bit silly.

RadioActive wrote:

I've been listening to a number of Jays games on the Fan and there's one word they keep using endlessly that stands out: "velo," pronounced Vee-Low.

It's short for velocity, and it seems to have become the word of the season for these guys. I must hear it referred to at least 20 times a broadcast, and for the life of me, I have no idea when it became so common that you can't listen to a game without it being used almost every inning and in the pre- and post-game coverage.

Never mind that the real thing isn't pronounced veel-ocity. For some reason, it's become the new buzz word in these broadcasts - at least on the Fan - and I have to admit, it's starting to get on my nerves. Anyone else notice this? They sound like teenagers using the latest slang word. But way too often. Is this new or have I somehow missed it in years past?
