I did this once while on a plane from Toronto to Acapulco in 1986.
As you mentioned, the stations came and went very quickly. It was interesting to hear the announcer's voices and they transitioned from what I would consider accent-free to very thick southern ones, and then to Spanish as we passed over Texas and into Mexico.

During the Liberal leadership race, the CPC was running ads ("Carbon Tax Carney", "He's Just Like Justin") two or three times per hour on Bounce 99.5 in Kitchener.
They continued for a few days after that race ended, and have seemingly stopped.

Or Johnny Bravo - then people would get really confused. "Is he Greg or is he Johnny? Which one are we getting?"

As for Giant Tiger. I go to this store a few times a week. For me it's like a small Wal-Mart but you can park close to the front door and you don't need to go for a very long walk just to buy some milk. This is a small town store where rent is cheaper. I really don't think this type store would work in downtown Toronto.

Also, kids will be doomed if they still watch PBS kids, there programs were very educational, they toght us plain old canadians/americans about other cultures.

SOWNY » Can Anyone Explain This? » August 3, 2024 7:18 am |
LEDs themselves don't emit RF, but the electronics that drive them can. If not properly shielded, interference can result.
turkeytop wrote:
These warm, summer evenings I always stay outside on the patio until after dark. I sit at the patio table under the patio umbrella with my radio.
The umbrella has solar powered LED lights running along each of the ribs. These mid-summer nights, the lights always turn on about 9:15 PM. The very instant they switch on, it somehow attenuates the signal to my radio. A weak station gets weaker and sometimes gets lost altogether.
Anyone have a theory as to how that happens?

Spotted a "CKTB" plate in Kitchener today, number was 840, not 610.
Tangential to this thread, back around 1986-87, the PD (Eric Samuels) for HTZ-FM in St. Catharines lived in the same townhouse/condo complex as my family. His white Mazda RX7 had the vanity plate "HTZ <crown symbol> FM".
I wondered (as a dumb teenager) if he had a collection of such plates from all the stations he worked at.

I got a huge laugh when John Moore mentioned on Monday a throwaway line about a PR event at CFRB, which involved the sponsor bringing in free food to the station. He noted that all of it was gone in about four minutes, as the pack descended on the freebie like an invasion of locusts.
The reason this made me laugh so much was because I know how true it is. There's something about broadcasting and the people who work in it that makes them go absolutely insane whenever a free meal arrives.
What is it about radio and TV people that leads to this? Have you experienced this? Is it like this in other jobs, too?

I realize this thread is abot TV, but I found that being up on the escarpment, Fonthill area, 103.7 from Erie would often come in clearly.
I know that BrockU's campus radio has that frequency, but I'm guessing it's either not too strong a signal, or is not directed that way.
Dave The OTA guy wrote:
WBBZ is hit and miss for me. I don't know if it's their signal, me being close to the escarpment or a combination of both. When WBXZ came on the air I was able to get them. After the ATSC 3.0 switch where some area stations switched or swapped frequencies I lost them. It did get me a rock solid signal for WPXJ where I never got it before.
Back in the analog days, I'd get Rochester quite often on clear days and nights. The escarpment is likely the reason I can't get Erie here in St. Catharines too.

I didn't watch this concert, but I read that Downie was, quite understandably, not at the top of his game.
Annoucing that your beloved lead vocalist had a terminal condition and then, days later at most, announcing a tour seemed opportunistic.
RadioAaron wrote:
Great vocals were never really the appeal. It was more lyrics, stage presence, and riffs. I’d argue that him being a better singer would have removed some of the appeal.
But if you never liked them, you’ll definitely not like this show. Concerts rarely translate well to TV, and he was ill. I was there, and live it was a little more rough than usual

I know this is pedantic, but when reporting on an accident or other traffic infraction, the statement "Travelling at a high rate of speed" is meaningless and is very very grating.
Properly expressed, it's "rate of change of" something.
Rate of change of position is speed and rate of change of speed is acceleration.
Everytime I hear this on air, I hear a chorus of my university physics professors immediately correcting this.

It brings to mind the "New Kids on the Rock" prank by Scruff Connors at HTZ-FM from the early 1990s:
My recollection from listening at the time is that he never said "New Kids on the Block", but "New Kids on the Rock", a reference to the large rock etched with the station's logo on the lawn in front of the station.
That, coupled with the fact the NKOTB was no where near HTZ's playlist should have been a clue that something funny was going on (funny strange or funny haha depending on your point of view).

Interesting that they have Rita Celli listed as host of "Ontario Today".
It's been a long time - two+ years perhaps - since she's been on-air.
Presumably she's not coming back as the current host, Amanda Pfeffer, doesn't introduce herself as "sitting in for Rita Celli" as the people subbing for Gill Deacon on "Here and Now" do, as she deals with long-covid.
