OK, I also have a confession to make. And it's like kicking a puppy. But I never liked Downie's voice and didn't think he was a very good singer. So you're not alone.

A college classmate of mine, almost a lifelong Kingston resident (born and raised there), also wasn't much of a Downie fan, but liked Rob Baker and I believe knew him personally.

Maybe this far back... this well-known segment, the "sad flower", was first shown in SS's early days, but was remembered for being shown in the early '80s, immediately after the explanation to Big Bird that Mr. Hooper had died.

Was raised on some of WTVS' programming on cable... I could understand why they moved out of the old WJBK studios in New Center, but not why WTVS moved all the way out to Wixom of all places.

This will make the station another one back in Detroit proper; NBC affiliate WDIV has always been downtown, on West Lafayette, while the rest are out in the Southfield area.

SOWNY » Those under 35's aren't watching TV news...it is a growing trend » April 15, 2024 8:02 pm

40 y.o. guy here, and covid for me pretty much killed any possibility of returning to watching TV news. Prior to that, corporate horn-tooting (e.g. Vancouver 2010 on CTV/TSN, and Bell Let's Talk) and various events in the U.S. had led me to seriously reduce how much I'd watch news on TV, but covid was the final nail in the coffin.

Nowadays, for local content in my area (Ottawa Valley), I watch the websites of local radio stations and print/digital publishers, including the area's Metroland news site, and the small independent papers the Eganville Leader and, from the Quebec side, The Equity (Shawville). As for my go-to outlets for national and international news, the traditional wire services (e.g. Canadian Press and Associated Press) are two of them, as well as the BBC.

SOWNY » What TV Shows Did You Like as a Kid? » April 13, 2024 11:08 pm

For programming in general, I was very much into game shows as a kid. When we got cable in the late '80s, it brought in the American networks via Detroit, and so I'd be able to watch daytime game shows such as The Price Is Right, Classic Concentration (I was able to occasionally solve a rebus) and, in the Ray Combs era, Family Feud. There were two Canadian GSs that I'd often watch; one was CBC's "Talk About", hosted by Wayne Cox and produced at CBC Vancouver; and "Kidstreet" with Kevin Frank, aired on Global in Ontario and taped in Calgary at CFAC "2&7", now a Global station itself.

As for children's programming, one of my favourites was the original Inspector Gadget, which Global ran in mornings as late as 2002 or '03... the soundtrack by Shuki Levy & Haim Saban is still one of the best in an animated series. Also in my younger years, frequently watched stuff like Today's Special, Mr. Dressup, and in its last couple of years in production, The Friendly Giant. Look up, waaaay up...

SOWNY » Do You Remember Your First Ever DX Catch? » April 4, 2024 8:00 pm

On AM, my first was New York's WCBS, which often came in very well at night at our place in the Peterborough area in the early '90s. First FM DX catch was Sudbury's CJRQ 92.7; this was before Peterborough's Trent Radio (CFFF) moved to that frequency from 96.3.

The father and son behind this stunt never say what station it is, but in a separate post, the son indicates it's on a frequency of 1460 AM and is 10,000 watts. He also expresses surprise that the meat wasn't all that hot after coming in contact with the metal, despite the shower of sparks and half the thing being blown off.

Oh, and one more thing, and this may be the most important fact of all: the hot dog used was an Oscar Meyer Uncured Beef Frank. So now you know.

Talking Hot Dog gives new meaning to 'Ham radio'

The brand of hot dog probably rules out Guelph's CJOY as the station in question.

SOWNY » Radio Contests Not As Easy As They Used To Be » March 25, 2024 10:15 am

Many stations in southern Ontario continue to do "Hi-Lo" in one form or another... an example would be the "myFM ATM" that MBC's myFM stations often run once or twice a year.

On a related note, Stingray's Hot 89.9 in Ottawa posted on Facebook this morning that their contests etc. are now open to all Canadians, including Quebec residents. Very often those residents are excluded from various contests and promotions originating elsewhere in Canada, due to provincial laws/regulations involving contests, promotions, games of chance and so on. Guessing that Stingray finally went through all the necessary stuff with the regulatory agency (the RACJ) to allow QCers, esp. those in Gatineau and other places in the 89.9 OTA coverage area, to participate in their stations' contests.

SOWNY » Bell, Rogers & Telus Tell Gov't. Cttee. Their Prices Are Coming Down » March 19, 2024 8:07 am

A couple of months ago, my wife & I switched from Rogers to Koodo (part of Telus) for our mobile service. We were paying nearly $200/month (including taxes) for a shared plan, and now on Koodo, on a month-to-month bring-your-own-device plan, our total is $72/month for unlimited calls and SMS/MMS in Canada, and 10 GB data each at 4G speeds, which is still plenty, as we use wi-fi as much as possible.

One other thing I like that Koodo has and Rogers doesn't, is its included "call control" where non-whitelisted callers have to dial a specific digit to get through to us... blocks pretty much all robocalls, and my wife, with an Ottawa number, was getting a lot of them. With this feature, I might not need to use the "call screen" feature on my current phone, a Google Pixel 6a (with Android 14) that I've had for a couple of weeks now.

Great info - I also remember the RCA Turnstile antennas "batwings" used for low band VHF - CKVR used one.

So did the now-dark CJOH (CTV Ottawa) rebroadcaster on channel 6 near Deseronto... got some clear photos of the antenna years ago when I was doing some transmitter work for Napanee's CKYM-FM 88.7, which is on the same tower.

We use FRS at the local junior hockey games, for the ice-level crew to relay goal and penalty info to me (the public address announcer and online scorekeeper) in the stands; my wife (the DJ in the gondola, beside the broadcast commentators) listens in, and also communicates with us using her radio.

SOWNY » Kingston’s historic student-run radio station faces enrolment crisis » February 23, 2024 9:43 pm

I remember hearing the station for the first time in 2001, during a week-long high school program at Queen's; the transmitting antenna was just a stone's throw from the campus, atop the old Kingston Collegiate. Turns out when I began studying radio at Belleville's Loyalist College later in 2001, at least three of my classmates were CKVI alumni, and I believe Loyalist saw a bunch more ex-CKVI personnel over the years.

SOWNY » Super Bowl ads » February 12, 2024 7:45 am

My wife watched her Chiefs win it all on the CTV feed (CJOH). Not sure if she chose to watch it there or if CBS (WWJ Detroit) was simsubbed here, which it normally isn't on our Cogeco system... Bell is the dominant provider here, primarily satellite, and Cogeco locally is exempt from simsub requirements due to a low enough subscriber count.

Can't really speak for many of the commercials, if any... I didn't pay much attention to them, but a friend who watched OTA via Watertown NY's CBS outlet, WWNY 7, commented on the lack of ads for streaming services and telecom providers.

EDIT: She did watch on CJOH... the box was still on that channel (ch. 701) and not WWJ (ch. 713) when I fired up the TV this morning.

SOWNY » A Radio Station That Feels Like Grandma's House » February 8, 2024 11:15 am

SOWNY » CFRC Radio Is Queen University’s Best-Kept Secret » February 7, 2024 9:03 am

In 2006, while in Kingston visiting family, I was able to check out CFRC's studios at Carruthers Hall. Just inside the station entrance was a display of vintage equipment, and in the two control rooms, lots of gear, and no real automation in sight, just a Mac with iTunes to play recorded content. What impressed me the most was the acoustics in the rooms - no echo/reflections at all!

Campus radio for me was a good stepping stone to commercial radio, first with a Grade 12 co-op placement at Trent Radio in Peterborough, followed by more than a year on Loyalist College's CJLX. The latter was primarily a "teaching station" for the college's radio broadcasting and broadcast journalism students, mostly programmed like a commercial station, and when I was there, was the only station in the area playing any kind of rock format... 'LX ran rock/alternative for the majority of the week, with a maximum of 25% hits, not counting newer Canadian hits.

We in the radio class of '03 had a lot of fun running CJLX in the 2002-2003 academic year, and it was one of my favourite times in the early part of my radio career.
