Very sad news.    I feel like I've known Bruce for a long time just from our social media interactions.  I got a chuckle out of some of his contributions on Twitter, Facebook and here over the years and I recently started following him on the Twitter alternative Bluesky.   I was last in contact with Bruce to tell him about Mike Cleaver's passing because he wasn't on the Yellow Board.    My heartfelt condolences to his close family and friends.    RIP.

As a nerdy aside, I'm amazed that DisplayPort never took off for TVs. DisplayPort is an open standard (no royalties), and it's more technologically advanced than HDMI.

Probably the same reason knots are still the unit of measure in maritime and aeronautics instead of metric alternatives - the governing organisations are too lazy to effect the change.

The DisplayPort's I've had experience with never had sound capability, just video.   So HDMI was definitely more advanced because it carries both.

That was great info.  Thanks for sharing.  I sometimes browse online copies of The Star and Globe from the library and even the cost of electronics in the mid 80s early 90s is an expensive eyeopener when adjusted for inflation in today's $.    I remember paying $600 for a Toshiba 27" color (CRT) TV using my employee discount in 1996 and today that price is $1100.  Granted it lasted almost 20 years while a LED is good for maybe 10.    It's always neat to have the Bank of Canada's inflation calculator handy when looking up old ads.

The CBC had a great TV exclusive on the arrests of the Boyd Gang in North York on Sept 8.   They had escaped the Don Jail after notorious bank robber Edwin Alonso Boyd had been apprehended  (in March) at 42 Heath St, not far from my place in Midtown Toronto and next to where my friend rented for 20 years and had been where the cops set up their surveillance of Boyd's house next door.    The CBC TV coverage was a big deal at the time.
Where was Boyd Gang in September 1952?

I found a video of the first news cast and it had to do with the Boyd arrests.   Unfortunately CBC posted it to their Facebook page but it still plays without having an account.

It wasn't the hosts that saved the broadcast, though. It was their guests, which included people like Evan Soloman, Scott Reid, John Baird and many others with actual political experience. 640's coverage, by comparison, was subpar. So congrats to 1010. They were better than I thought they'd be on a very important night in the world.

It got to a point where I went with the very sedate coverage of PBS because they had the highest called scores for both candidates!       I always get a charge out of how each coverage can have differences in the called numbers.   It's a little like watching a hockey game on 4 channels, with each having a different score.

Straight from the article: "Spotify has increased its prices in Canada across the board, following a similar move made in the U.S. this past June."

RIP indeed.

The number of versions within 1 year of Me And Bobby McGee is bountiful.    Several artists covering the same song is probably unlikely today.

From Wikipedia:

""Me and Bobby McGee" is a song written by American singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson and originally performed by Roger Miller. Fred Foster shares the writing credit, as Kristofferson wrote the song based on a suggestion from Foster.  A posthumously released version by Janis Joplin topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971, making the song the second posthumously released No. 1 single in U.S. chart history after "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding. Gordon Lightfoot released a version that reached number 1 on the Canadian country charts in 1970. Jerry Lee Lewis released a version that was number 1 on the country charts in December 1971/January 1972 as the "B" side of "Would You Take Another Chance on Me". I listen to a few podcasts a week and most are 30 - 45 minutes with a few others extending to 2 hrs., but only occasionally.   A recent interview by Bob Leftsetz with former Toronto based promoter Johnny Brower was just short of 3 hours but since he's an excellent story teller the length was fine.     If the content is worthy of the time I don't care how long it is.   But when it starts dragging on or going off topic it should be edited down.   Some just put what they record straight to the podcast app without trimming the fat.   It can be a real pain in the ear.

On that Toronto concert film, I'm not sure if it's in the movie, but there's a radio connection.

The story goes that the desperate promoter tried to convince CHUM-FM that John Lennon was on his way from the U.K. to perform at Varsity Stadium. But at first, the station didn't believe him and refused to mention anything on air.

Only after it was confirmed did the prog rock FM decide to tell everyone. And that's when it exploded.

I hope that aspect of the story is told because it became a big part of the legendary success of the show.

Brower talks about it in depth, including why he refused to get 'radio people' to MC the concert and hired Kim Fowley and Rodney Bingenheimer, who'd been flown in from Los Angeles.   His reasons are solid too.   Fowley had the idea to get John Lennon as well, so without him the show would have crashed and burned.    CHUM wasn't cooperating until Lennon had an impromptu press conference at Heathrow airport announcing his imminent trip to Toronto so they finally believed Brower's story.   Too bad it was too late to be involved  except to spread the word on the air claiming it to be a 'CHUM exclusive', which is wasn't.  They found out by reading their news teletype like everybody else.

I remember Black Label being popular well before 1989, probably mid 1980s.   It was taken up by the younger crowd in the downtown Toronto club and bar scene.    It wasn't until 1989 that Carling realized what they had with its rising popularity and started to run ads for it again.

From what I understand she left the bike lane because it was partially blocked by a construction dumpster.  She was hit as she entered the roadway.

Is it too much to ask local news reporters to do their job and find out:

Does one need a permit to place a dumpster on a public road/bike lane?

If so, who was the permit issued to and who issued it.

In that same vein I’d also like to know which nearby construction project was connected to the dumpster.

BTW, the dumpster was removed by the time the 6:00 PM news reporters did their live hits from the scene.

I’m not asking for Mike Wallace here...just a few simple answers.
Thanks

Unfortunately we'll probably never know because the reporters I see on TV only interview tight lipped cops and bystanders and never drill any deeper.   The cops usually have no background to how something happened and understandably don't do conjecture, while the interviews with bystanders are almost always filler about how bad they feel about the incident.

Typically, once the reporter has left the scene the whole topic vanishes from the public eye never to be heard of again, leaving a pile of unanswered questions.

Fortunately this one will get lots of push back from cycling groups which hopefully will keep it on the front burner for a day or two.

I'm sure NASCAR fans who are cord cutters were not happy to hear they wouldn't be seeing the end of the race!

I can't recall a major network doing that to its viewers before and it's a terrible precedent. As much as I hate sports run-overs, if you're going to show the thing, show the whole thing. Don't make me to turn to another channel, especially if it's one I can't get.

I have.  Sadly it happens a lot in motorsports, especially when there's weather bad enough to stop a race.    I recently saw one where NBC stuck with it through the end, an extra 2-3 hours.   It was probably preempting something less spectactular like pro Pickleball.

Not only is it not on the main network, but it's also not going to be on cable. Only the streaming service Peacock will have it, which will limit it for the majority of Americans who don't subscribe. Not sure how popular the race is down south, but it's one of the marquee events up here and it's a shame we're losing the exposure and publicity that comes with it being on free TV.

IndyCar: Toronto street race not being broadcast on NBC

I noticed that too and it's because the Toronto race competes with the NASCAR Brickyard 400 from Indy (also on NBC).      It's one of NASCAR's signature events and though in decline, NASCAR is way more popular than IndyCar presently.   They led in with the British Open, another major sports event.    NBC has done a solid job of race coverage this season with a lot of variety and IndyCar is one of 3 series they've shown.    When most races are on TSN+, they've also been on NBC, which sabotages  TSN's stupid streaming efforts nicely.
