Movies Not Filmed In US Are A Foreign Threat Says Trump

Maybe it was the fact that the new Little House On The Prairie is being filmed in Winnipeg put President Trump over the edge.  He claims that the movie industry in the US is in peril, so bring on some new big tariffs on movies not filmed in the USA.  More from Deadline...https://deadline.com/2025/05/trump-movie-tariffs-hollywood-1236384980/

Like previous bozo eruptions, this latest one is designed to look good on paper and keep the base happy, but has little practical chance of being implemented. In the meantime, new film and TV production in Canada with U.S. and foreign co-producers continues to rise.

That was my first thought, too, and I think this is another middle finger to what he sees as left-leaning Hollywood, who he views as an enemy. Plus, it hurts Canada as he prepares to meet with Carney, so that's a bonus.

The head of the current regime in America recently appointed some degenerate sycophants to be 'Ambassadors to Hollywood'. Perhaps this is their plan.

Fat Nixon isn't smart or aware enough to think of this strategy.

Stephen Miller and Peter Navarro are behind this.

I trust that Carney's team has anticipated a shaming-attempt (à la Zelenskyy) in the Oval Office meeting and have crafted an appropriate response.

Re: Movies Not Filmed In US Are A Foreign Threat Says Trump

I think Trump has a love/hate for Hollywood.  After all he was a part of that circle for many years, and some would argue he still is.  Trump loves the spotlight and exposure and this is what Hollywood and media represent to him.  He does hate the Hollywood elite, and this tariff ruling if implimented will make it very difficult for producers and the film/TV companies.

The reason production is done outside of the US and California in particular is to keep costs down.  The US dollar alone balloons the price of production.  Everybody has tax breaks now for film production (including California) so the competition is like never before.  Producers will go where their dollars go further, and right now that doesn't appear to be Hollywood.

If Trump is successful with this tariff of 100% then that would scuttle most production outside of the US.  However the Governor of California says that Trump doesn't have the authority to impose tariffs on movie production.

This one bottomed out fast.   CBS news at 6:00 put the report on and the reporter also added that Trump has no power to tariff movies, books, audio or anything else covered under the US 1st Amendment due to a Congressional change in the law a few years ago specifying that they are exempt from the emergency powers he's currently abusing to tariff things outside of the usual Congressional jurisdiction.

This is a non-starter that won't survive the judicial process, and Hollywood is rejecting it too.

It will be yet another one of Trump's illegal Executive Orders which are losing court challenges.
