If it is indeed a format change and country is the most likely option tomorrow would be a great day for Today radio to make a change. They haven’t gained any market share at all. Still one of the bottom stations. May as well flip it.

I hope the new owners are aware of what they're in for, because they're going to have a lot of programming to replace.

Consider:

-CKTB runs Jerry Agar's Show out of CFRB from 10-noon.

-That's followed by Vassy Kapelos from Ottawa during noon-2PM.

-At 7 PM until 11, there's NewsTalk Tonight with Jim Richards and

-From midnight - 5 AM, it's all iHeart Radio repeats, including John Moore and Bill Carroll.

What do they all have in common? They're all sourced from Bell stations across Ontario and Quebec (Elias Makos), programming that presumably won't be available to the new owners any more.

That's 13 hours of programming a day they'll lose out of a 24-hour period (and that's not counting weekends.) It's not going to be easy to fill all that time without some new hires. Unless they opt for some kind of syndicated stuff overnight. But there are still a lot of holes during the day. And filling it won't be cheap, even in a smaller market.

It will be really interesting to see how they do it.

I wonder if they will shift times of shows during the day. Hire a new voice or two and syndicate most of the overnight and weekend programming. As for HTZ Ashleigh is based out of Calgary now. So that will be a host replaced. Bounce and Move will need more on air staff at times also. I can see them investing in it. But at the same time I think they will look to do something different with one of the stations in a year or two. Try a format change to boost listeners and advertising dollars. Also with a local ownership they might actually do better in the market. People may tune in more again now that the programming will be a bit different.

It is worth noting as well that CBS got out of the radio business six years ago in the US, selling their 185 stations to Entercom (now Audacy).  This has not worked out well for Audacy which is now in chapter 11 bankruptcy.  They took on too many stations at once when the radio market was starting to soften, all of this prior to COVID.

Audacy paid $2.4 billion for CBS radio and last month when they filed for bankruptcy they listed $2.66 billion in total debt.  With chapter 11 they will be able to slash $1.6 billion of the debt.  Bell Media, Corus Entertainment, and Rogers Media are all profitable. However both Bell and Rogers have high debt loads from their other divisions.

Bell selling these 45 so called under performing radio outlets to six different and smaller companies is a much safer bet.  And all of them are familiar running smaller stations which again is a plus.  All six made their companies successful in smaller/medium markets.

If  Bell decides to sell their larger and healthy medium sized stations in the future, let's hope that Pattison,  Cogeco and a few smaller/regional players buy these stations.

In time, alll of this could be the best thing to happen with radio in Canada for years. Let those more familiar with broadcasting run these stations, and not a mega conglomerate like BCE, where radio has only been a minor sideline since day one.

I have heard rumblings that bell will be selling more stations. Plus I heard Corus and Stingray will also be selling stations. So I am sure a lot will change in the next year or so

I have a follow up question.
Why don’t any of your stations list the on air staff on the websites? I enjoy going to station sites and seeing who works there. In my opinion it gives a personal connection to the talent that entertains us.

Long time listener first time caller here. With the new stations you are getting I saw last night there is no job cuts coming, which is good. Will there be any format changes there or elsewhere, maybe to streamline formats or brandings you have? Mainly I am looking to see if there will be any more FREQ stations elsewhere. I understand if you cannot answer yet but I am just curious. As a listener that is what I am curious about the most.
I appreciate you as an owner of a station coming on and discuss things here. I cannot remember a time when a radio station owner actually listened to what people have to say and wanted to address what is being said.
As for FREQ, I tell everyone I can about it and have even got friends from BC and Alberta tuning in because of the sound and mixshows. I would love hearing this format at more stations. If I recall one of the stations you are buying in Kingston had a format similar to FREQ previously and was a good station.

Thank you for what you are doing with local radio and keep up the good work

There is a good podcast interview with Vista President Bryan Edwards. He mentions keeping all 80 employees and hopefully adding more. I have heard from a lot of other people that the plan is to hire more people and make things local in more markets. Pure country Peterborough is most likely going to be KX Country. Durham is getting a Bounce, Move and Pure and will almost guaranteed to be hiring more staff. Bounce or Move will most likely become a rock station similar to The Rock in Oshawa. Maybe Ed the Sock will expand his reach. It will be very interesting times in Canadian radio. I am hoping some of my radio friends get back into radio and a lot of people do not lose jobs because of the sales.
Although I am concerned for the St Catherines and Hamilton station being sold to WhiteOaks because they generally are Christian stations and the current formats do not fit what they generally broadcast.

I am expecting a lot of changes at TSN. I love watching the Jay Onrait show but there is already a sportscentre that airs on other TSN channels and so why produce 2? They also run a lot of filler programming on the network already so it wouldn’t surprise me if more of that happens. I also wouldn’t be surprised if they got rid of some of the local NHL broadcasts of Ottawa, Montreal and Winnipeg games. Sell off those rights or let them expire and then let Rogers take over.
I am just going through the list of radio stations being sold and it seems like there is a lot of stations that have one host on many stations (Tarzan on Bounce) and in BC I think there is some syndication of morning and afternoon shows in the interior stations. It will be intriguing what those stations do and what they sound like over the next 6-12 months. I am expecting several format/branding changes for sure. Recently Vista bought a couple stations in Alberta, Country 96.5 (CKLJ), Rock 104.5 (CKJX) in Olds and Country 106.5 (CKVG) in Vegreville. They also just flipped a 2Day radio in Lethbridge to Country.

As much as I use SiriusXM, my plan is coming for renewal and I paid 135.60 for my last full year. They had emailed to let me know that in March it would go to $390 for the year. I called and the best offer they could give me was 197.91 plus taxes and fees. Then they tried to offer me a different plan but I would lose the sports play by play and the Howard stern channels. And it would still be more than my current rate. The new rate would still be about 160 a year. With less channels
So I am pretty much leaving now.

I keep it because I listen to hard rock and metal. Most of which doesn’t get played on radio. The songs that I do listen to that may get played on regular radio are edited down so much that it doesn’t sound good. So I keep the SiriusXM and I also use Apple Music on my phone for other stuff. I enjoy listening to the Sirius on my phone when I am out running errands and not in the car. But I also have playlists of music on Apple Music and when I find good songs on a Sirius station I add it to my playlists.

Agreed. I got an email today from someone I know quite well and the information I got about station sales and some stations maybe shutting down and a bunch of other news is going to be really interesting. And it's not just one company making a lot of moves. Another bigger company is going to be doing a lot too. Canadian radio by December is going to look really interesting.

The website was updated again and the show has been pulled but if you tap on the shows portion at the top it says The Morning Rush in the pull down but tapping it takes you to a dead link page. So I assume it went up prematurely and was pulled. Must have spoiled the surprise.

The morning duo of Mark & Ian haven't been heard since before Christmas and this week it's just non-stop music with liners in the morning slot with a promise of 'new' Fresh mornings on Monday. I'm guessing it'll be a multi-market morning show, perhaps Scott & Kat (who are already heard in the afternoon on 103.1). I have no inside knowledge about this but it seems to be "the thing to do" in the radio biz these days.

If you go on the website and look at Fresh Mornings it only mentions Mark. I heard he is moving to afternoons. Scott and Kat will most likely be heard in the mornings soon. There was a rumor I heard before Christmas that the Fresh stations, plus Energy Hamilton as well as The Beat and Jump were mostly going to operate as one network. Same playlists. Same hosts for most of the day. Specialty shows like the Fresh 20 on all stations. Maybe the changes in London will be a starting point for that.
Another clue that things are changing is a lot of the station websites have glaring holes for shows at certain times of the day. So it makes me think changes are going to go full steam ahead soon. It would save money unfortunately.

Let’s not forget that closer to home, Bell put up over 50 radio stations for sale.  In the coming weeks, as the applications are filed with the CRTC it will become clearer the extent to which Bell is abandonning its bad investments in radio.  In some markets the land where the transmitters (were) located will fetch far more money than a sale of the assets of the stations.

So I have heard from other sources Bell offered up all stations including ones that they have now shut down. But then I heard the list was cut down to 50 or less. It will be interesting to see what happens because currently on the Pure, Move, Bounce and Virgin branded stations a lot of hosts run shows on multiple stations across those networks. If for example Bell sells off the Manitoba to BC stations (except Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton) would hosts on those stations who originate from Ontario stay on the stations. Or for instance any hosts that originate in Winnipeg or Victoria that originate on a station that is sold what will happen then. For example Johnny Novak does mornings on Virgin Victoria but if that station is sold but not Virgin Edmonton (where he does afternoons now) what happens to his Edmonton show?
I think there is going to be a lot of changes this year if Bell does sell 50 stations. But it could also be a nice boost for Pattison who currently has zero stations in Ontario or east.

In the US to get this thread back on track, I don't think Audacy will be forced to sell stations. From what it sounds like is the creditors will take ownership of the company. I think Audacy will sell stations or at the very least take offers. Depending how many creditors there are that may take over the company, maybe it gets split into multiple companies. If that is the case there will be a lot of new changes to on air lineups as many stations across the Audacy family either have no on air staff at certain times of the day or they have one host on many stations.

Well I can safely say that Corus isn't updating websites with speed right now. Jeremy White finished his show just before Christmas on Energy in Hamilton, and he is still listed. Turn Up show is still on all the sites it was aired on and they did the final show on New Years Eve. With all the layoffs they may have laid off the web guy too. Or they just haven't had a chance to update things yet.
Also just remember the Corus stock is in the crapper so most likely they are cutting corners to save money. Take a look at the new Country station in Winnipeg. The morning show host at Country Winnipeg is the afternoon host of CISN country Edmonton, the afternoon show in Winnipeg is the morning show co-host on Country 105 Calgary and the midday host is the same midday host as the one that does middays in Calgary, Edmonton and London. So basically they let go of hosts in September, and launched a new station on the 27th without hiring a new host. Also to point out both FM96 London and Y108 Hamilton have the same on air lineup until 6pm every day.

The only criticism of the show was during July Talk. I love them as a band and near the beginning of the performance when it was time for Leah to start her part her mic wasn't working properly. No big deal, she was able to power through and ended up using a different mic.
Otherwise from what we saw of it, the show was good. Although the countdown was off by a couple minutes. The timer was showing 4 minutes until the new year, and according to my Rogers guide it was 11:59 same with the clock on my phone.

I look at these numbers and am surprised. Edge is nowhere near as good as it used to and Indie in my opinion is much better. With better on air staff. Boom at the top doesn't surprise me at all but the fact Kiss, Virgin, Z and CHUM are between 3-6 in that order is a surprise. There used to be more of a gap between them. There has always been people talking about a possible flip at one of them, whether it's Kiss or Virgin. Same with the possibility of a flip at edge because Indie was doing much better. But now it seems like indie is the one that could use a change.
But my question is how much longer will Today continue to exist in this current format. I was listening for a while and texting in to be a part of the conversation. Then almost every single time someone would call me back. Ask me questions for a segment that would air at a later time. They encourage conversation but aren't live a lot of the time. So it's a lot of best of and re-rolls of segments. Something needs to change there for sure. Also it would help if the 2 afternoons show hosts were broadcasting in the same city. Or time zone at least.

3 alt-leaning stations in Ottawa would be excessive, not to mention that CHEZ and Rebel also include a fair amount of modern rock now.

I would assume CHEZ would move the alternative over to Sonic. And rebel has a lot of issue with signal. Even live 88.5 has signal issues in plenty of areas of the city or surrounding areas. When I used to live in the city there were plenty of areas with limited or no signal. But 105.3 has a huge signal so they would be able to build an audience and probably do quite well with it.

I have wondered for years how this station survives as it is, for years the morning show was an American syndicated show, but also hot 89.9 just sounds better, in my opinion. I wouldn't be surprised if this station starts to change format or at least tweak it. Especially with Rogers making changes even though that is more Smiths Falls, but there are some rumors that 105.3 is going to Kiss off and possibly become a different station.
