I didn't like it when CKNX was doing it. We were living up on the Bruce Peninsula then, and CKNX was our only FM station.

When CKNX FM first came on in the late 70s they had a similar format. After school, two hours of rock. During the early afternoon, a program for seniors. Farm news in the morning.  Late Saturday night, jazz. Sunday morning, religion. Etc They tried to have something for everyone.

9:25 PM Friday. I have it on right now and they're playing some English language music.

I was going to say I thought they were broadcasting as I have heard the station but they are only testing.  The signal was clear in a parking garage downtown and I could hear it in my car as I traveled to the south end of the city.

The cheap portable to which I refered was a $15 job from Forest City surplus. I can get the signal on all my other radios. I'm going out in the car later today. I expect it will be OK on the car radio.

According to the documentation contained in this extension, the station is already on air in ‘test’ and are just waiting for the broadcasting certificate (now I wonder what could be holding that up).
So they should be on now. Can anyone confirm?

Yes. I checked just now. A stong signal here in east London, about 11 KM away.

That was on a good quality Sangean radio. I just now  tried, using a cheap portable I have. Not a sound.

A Tower in Babel

A great novel about radio during WW II
Two O'Clock, Eastern Wartime

Widely acclaimed for his groundbreaking crime novels Booked to Die and The Bookman's Wake, award-winning author John Dunning triumphantly returns with a riveting new thriller that takes us back to the summer of 1942, when radio was in its prime, when daylight saving time gave way to "wartime," when stations like WHAR on the New Jersey coast struggled to create programming that entertained and inspired a nation in its dark hour.

Never had an on air job or even worked in radio. Back in the 1980s I was on CFOS in Owen Sound on an election night as part of a "Panel Of Experts." On the panel were representatives of all the parties. That was my radio career.

Our main TV provider is Shaw satellite. But we have the very minimum packge with Bell Fibe. The only reason we have it is because the total cost of our telephone and Internet is cheaper when we bundle it with Fibe. The only time we ever use it is when the satellite goes out during heavy rain.

Once I get over the guilt feelings from driving an import, it's a nice ride. My biggest complaint has been with the owners manual. It's really vague and in some instances, inaccurate. I found a feature today that isn't even mentioned in the manual, but I really appreciate it. The heated steering wheel.

And, of course, I like the radio. Too bad my old ears are no longer capable of appreciating good quality audio. I just listen to the music and let my memory fill in the blanks of how it used to sound.

My last 3 vehicles were all Chevy Equinox. AM radio reception was lousy. During the day, all I could get were the local stations here in London. I always blamed it on that little nub of an antenna on top of the roof.

Recently, I bought a new Mitsubishi vehicle. It has the same style of antenna but the AM is great. During the day I get good reception from 680 and 740 in toronto, 580 from Windsor and 920 from Wingham. Lots of others too, but I didn't pause my tuning long enough to get a positive ID.

DXers will find this station back on air again - if the signal reaches here. WFME, occupying the old WQXR spot in NYC - is currently putting out 10,000 watts. Give it a try and see if you can hear it after sundown - even if you're overseas.

"Family Radio powered up WFME from its new site last month with 1,000-watts and it has since been able to boost the output to 10,000-watts. The goal may be to reach the New York metro area, but Inside Radio heard from a DXer in Sweden who picked up the signal."

Tried it last night without success but I'll keep trying. I don't have a religious bone in my body. I'm a non-believer. But I enjoy listening to the traditional Christian music they play.

Got a call from an outfit that compiles radio listening statistics. The guy asked me if I'd be willing to participate. I told him I would. So he started asking for my personal information. As soon as I told him my age, he said they weren't interested in hearing from people in my age group.

I can't understand why. We're a demographic that is mostly debt free. We have a steady and disposable income.Wouldn't their advertizers want to speak to us, if there was radio we listened to?

I'll type this again so it can be ignored: They DO survey your demographic, but you're also the easiest demographic to get ahold of on the phone. So by the time they got to you, they had enough sample of your demo already and were looking for harder-to-get-ahold of younger demos.

Oh.

Yes. The old CKOT was great. Even when we lived up in the Owen Sound area I could get it once in a while.

They still get a good signal into London here, but it's not worth listening to.

The worst ads have to be the prescription drug ads. They talk about, sing about and dance about the brand. But they don't say what it's intended to treat. They just say "Ask your Doctor about it". So I go to my Dr. and ask about a drug intended for menopause.

Is CBC still on 990 in Winnipeg? I thought they would have gone over to FM years ago. I still have the QSL card I got from them back in the 70s some time.

Similar to, but not as good. Back in  those years I was living in a part of Ontario where there was no local FM. But sometimes I could get reception from 95.3 and 105.3. They were good. Whereas I might have ranked CKDS as a 10 and CFCA at an 8, the original Escape, I  might have scored at a 3 and the current iteration as a 5.

It just isn't as lush and rich sounding as were those once great radio stations. Their play lists weren't all orchestral they also included some vocals. And perhaps the on air personalities added another dimmension.

And maybe my old ears are no longer as capable of discerning audio quality as they once were.

Any time I've listened to Escape in the past, I've always been a little disappointed. Unknown orchestras playing bland arrangements of what would otherwise be good music. But I've been tuning in to it over the past few days and noticing improvement.
