It used to be that radio was an expensive option. I always bought without the radio and installed my own after market radio.

SOWNY » Why All Radio & TV In Ontario Will Be Interrupted On Wednesday » May 5, 2025 8:21 pm |
While we were in Florida we were facing the possibility of a real emergency. There were severe thunderstorms with tornados popping up around the area. We were glued to the local news channel waiting for the latest word.
Then came a scheduled test of the emergency system. It blanked out coverage of the real emergency for about three minutes.

SOWNY » Trump Orders Funding Cut To NPR & PBS. What Does This Mean For WNED? » May 2, 2025 8:13 pm |
According to NPR, only about 3% of their funding comes from the public purse. The rest comes from listener contributions and from Corporate grants.
A loss of 3% of it's funding may not kill NPR but it would certainly hamper its ability to produce quality programs.
But if defunding doesn't kill NPR, the Republicans will try other means. Donations from listeners are tax deductible. They could take away that tax break to limit contributions.

When we're in the US, I listen to NPR almost exclusively. They are mostly neutral. If they have any bias at all it is to the right.
They have a daily program for capitalists, "Marketplace." They don't have a program for the working class. They accept financial backing from corporations but they refuse donations from Unions and other labour organizations. They say it would create the appearance of bias.

I have a Grundig RF-200 Crank Radio. For such a small radio, it is pretty good for AM DX. Not so much for FM and SW. But it wasn't designed for that purpose. Nice choice of colours too. Yellow, Red or Blue.
I have that radio too. I love it.

Back in the Golden Days of short wave radio (1960s and 70s) VOA, R Moscow and BBC were all over the dial at all hours, almost a nuisance. Nowadays we would welcome that nuisance.
