In this day and age, unless you are aged 60 and up, they would probably assume you are lying about not having a social media account and deny the VISA. It's sad that I have to suggest this, but if you don't have one right now, set up a burner account on one of the popular platforms and just post a few random things over the next year (obviously none of it can be anti-Trump).
This way, you can present it as your "real" social media account if you ever need to travel into the US for any reason, because they will ask to see it. You have to do it sooner than later since posts are time-stamped and they'd likely check your earliest post to verify this isn't some burner account set up to hide your real social media account.
Meanwhile, speaking of social media:

I wonder how long a person has to work at Global News in order to get an on-air sendoff. Two weeks ago, Global News Toronto's Shallima Maharaj, who's been at Global for 12 years, and worked as both reporter and occasional news anchor, left the job to go work in Denver alongside her husband.
I don't recall Global doing any sort of farewell or acknowledgement of her last day. Viewers wouldn't even know about her departure unless they saw her socials.

Applicants for US Visas are now required to list their social media handles on the application
The U.S. Department of State has mandated that visa applicants provide their social media usernames used in the past five years on application forms DS-160 (nonimmigrant visas) and DS-260 (immigrant visas). This policy aims to enhance national security by allowing consular officers to review applicants’ online presence for potential security threats.
As of April 2025, the U.S. government has expanded this scrutiny. Immigration authorities now actively review public social media posts for content deemed extremist or affiliated with flagged groups. This includes applicants for student visas (F-1, J-1, M), work visas (H-1B), green cards, and even tourists.travel.
It isn't to look for security threats. It's a continuation of the new US policy to only allow in those who are pro-Trump and his government.

It was definitely a tech issue. The anchors kept talking even though the screen had gone to white (the CTV logo was still on the bottom-right corner though). They finally went to commercial as Radioactive pointed out when it was becoming obvious that they needed to do a reset to get their system working properly again.

Any climate change deniers (right-wing or not, though in my experience it just seems to be a right-wing thing) honestly will keep denying it until their homes are flooded, their cars are floating on the water, and half their furniture has been blown to China.
I'm still mad that all that Conservative propaganda about the carbon levy increasing grocery bills (despite studies showing it barely does) caused the end of the carbon tax rebate. That was free money every year for low income people who mostly take transit or in my case, just walk all the time.
They honestly don't see how close we are now to reaching the point of no return where a dangerous chain reaction of heat causes other changes that lead to more heat, leading to more global changes that lead to more heat... I just hope all these deniers own ocean-front property when things really get worse.

I'm going to reiterate my earlier prediction from last month that Trump and his cohorts are going to set up a massive crypto currency bubble. Think back to the insanity of the tech bubble from the mid-1990s to 2000 and plan accordingly. More importantly if you see friends or family falling for this scam, warn them to steer clear. This will undoubtedly bankrupt a lot of fools (especially Americans) as the collapse of the tech bubble did a generation earlier.

Missouri becomes the first US state to eliminate capital gains tax on both STOCKS and CRYPTO, setting a major precedent
…
Investors who profit from selling stocks, real estate and other assets soon could reap an even larger benefit in Missouri, which is poised to become the first U.S. state to exempt capital gains from its income tax.
Legislation that won final approval Wednesday would halt the capital gains tax this year for individuals and could eventually eliminate it for corporations, if state revenues keep growing.
The tax repeal now heads to Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe, who has said he’s “very supportive” of it.
Though proponents hope it can spur the economy, detractors assert that the capital gains tax repeal will primarily benefit the rich and result in less tax revenue for public schools and services.
The Republican-led Legislature overcame objections by Democrats only after expanding the bill with greater tax breaks for seniors and disabled residents and new sales tax exemptions for diapers and feminine hygiene products.

Now if he does wind up joining a rival morning show, he needs to show up in a costume and pull off the head to the shock of his new co-hosts. Those new co-hosts must then be subsequently fired by the station owners.

Redstone had conversations with various Paramount executives, among them George Cheeks, the Paramount co-CEO who oversees the CBS business, about certain “60 Minutes” stories, according to a person familiar with the matter. Redstone asked whether stories that could irritate Trump were correct and balanced, and inquired whether multiple stories that might draw Trump’s ire had to run on the same night, this person says. Two other people familiar with the “60 Minutes” editorial process say Zirinsky and her team were specifically tasked with examining stories tied concerning the Middle East and politics.
Redstone never issued any edicts about stories tied to Trump policies, says the person familiar with the situation, noting that the show has run such reports all season long. At this point, the person adds, with the current TV season drawing to a close, there is no reason to hold off on any stories the show has in the pipeline, as any acquisition by Skydance is not likely to be completed in that time frame.

60 Minutes is one of my favorite news programs, watched it for decades.
Suddenly I am quite fearful that it is going to get cancelled. But it will go out fighting against a tyrannical dick, and after whatever civil war is going to have to happen to get rid of the corrupted arm of the Republicans, it will hopefully come back.
Here's the video of tonight's segment in case people don't want to read the transcript.
I think this part sums up what is at stake here:
Scott Pelley: If the president brings the legal profession to heel what situation is the country in then?
John Keker: No rule of law. You're in a dictatorship. That's what's happened in China. It happened in Russia. These are legal systems that look like legal systems, but in fact are controlled by a dictatorship.
Everybody around the world knows that elections in Russia and China are a joke. The government writes the rules to ban any serious contender trying to run for the opposition, or just tosses them into prison on whatever justification they can dream up. Trump has already stated several times how much he respects both Putin and Xi Jinping, especially for the control that they hold over their countries. We're not going to get a fair election in 4 years... it's going to be an election where everyone knows it's a joke and that the victor has already been chosen.

What's terrifying is that in just100 days, Trump and his acolytes have gone from arresting and deporting illegal immigrants to a concentration camp in El Salvador (which, to remind folks, the Nazis also had their concentration camp outside of Germany), to arresting and detaining Harvard scientists, judges, and now threatening to arrest members of the rival political party.
ICE has become Trump's SS. I've noticed that my Canadian friends who have been living and working in the US will not, under any circumstance, post anything negative about the Trump regime even though they know what's happening, because they know their social media posts are going to be looked at, and Trump could easily have them sent back to Canada using whatever justification. These are friends who have married Americans, have kids there and they are quietly fearful of being permanently separated from them.

I also watched CTV coverage mostly, but tuned into City and Global's coverage periodically when the talking heads kept going on and on...
Funniest moment of last night for me: it looks like CTV was the first to declare that the Liberals would win the election then they asked their reporter who was in attendance at Liberal HQ why weren't the Liberal supporters celebrating?
After a few moments they realized that the Liberals weren't watching the CTV election coverage but watching another station's coverage instead (not a big shock, CTV has been the biggest pro-Conservative supporter out of all the stations during the election run, even right now for their noon newscast they've been slanting their reporting more towards unhappy PC voters, talking about PP's record-breaking support, the fact that the PCs broke through in Ontario, etc. barely anything positive said about Carney).
Once CTV saw the Libs suddenly cheering, they realized that whatever rival news station they were watching had now also declared that the Liberals were the winners and the anchor had to chime in and remind viewers "but we called the win first" lol.

The problem here is that when the federal Liberals proposed changing the capital gains tax to tax the wealthy more and raise more money that could be used to fund things like OAS (and support for Ukraine), the Conservatives instantly used it as a vector to attack the government with. Mark Carney then had to drop the idea completely since it would be political suicide in an election year.
So we can't tax the wealthy more to reduce the debt because the Cons will exploit it to get themselves elected (they already got a lot of mileage with an uninformed populace by harping on the so-called cost of the carbon levy), nobody wants to work 2 more years than they already do before getting their OAS (not when they see politicians in all the parties getting sweet pensions off the taxpayer dime), nobody wants to pay more taxes period, etc. It's a political stalemate.
The solution isn't electing a right-wing federal government to solve that growing debt by the way. In Ontario, we already have soaring debt ($408 billion) but Ford had no problem issuing $200 bribes to the voters before the election, even though the vast majority of the $3.2 billion cost will be paid for by borrowing money to cover it. Not exactly "fiscally responsible" but Ford was in deep trouble over all his multiple scandals and a bribe is a great way to make people forget.
I note that Trudeau was ready to do something similar, even though he knew it would be fiscally irresponsible, but likely realized that the PCs were winning over voters through the tactic and had no choice but to match it. I would've liked the extra cash, but I'm glad that the Liberals didn't do it.
There's no route out of that debt unless the opposition parties will agree not to use whatever painful solution that the ruling government comes up with, as a future election tactic. And we know that's never going to happen.

Trump has been churning out the executive orders like network TV churns out reality TV shows. Apparently now he's the sole interpreter of what is US law?
In this executive order, Trump gave himself the sole authority to interpret laws. And the Attorney General has that power also, with his approval. So you better believe these are laws whether they’re called “laws” or not. The Trump admin WILL enforce them as laws.
And:
'60 Minutes' chief resigns, saying show's independence was compromised
60 Minutes has probably been the only US news program that has consistently held the Trump regime to account, but it's obvious that CBS is getting worried that their network is going to be targeted for revenge by the president-in-sane. Is it really better to resign though? What does that do if it just leaves those behind in charge that are willing to cater to this insane cheeto's whims and demands? Honestly I'd rather stay, let the CBS chiefs fire me, since they'd have to wear the shame of helping the regime to suppress what's going on.

Wouldn't those retired people be very aware of the fact that it was the Conservatives that raised the retirement age to 67? Since when are news stations really apolitical? They may claim to be, but it didn't escape my notice that the moment our own PM (Trudeau, not Carney) had announced changes to the capital gains so that the wealthier Canadians would pay more, every single news station began chanting for him to resign until he had no choice but to quit. The rich are always going to have a strong influence over the news and how it is covered.
It's no accident either that Carney specifically said he wasn't going forward on those capital gains changes early on in his campaign. He needed the news coverage on his side if he had any hope of winning and that meant catering to the millionaires and billionaires that own the networks up here.

The decision to retire is all that happened there.

Well now we know how he thinks he can run for a 3rd term... using the exact same playbook as Russia's Putin:
EXCEPT there's one hitch:
He and the GOP have more than 3 years to concoct some loophole that would enable him to run again and Elon to rig the election again, and for the red state governors to find ways to toss out Democrat votes again. The only real question is whether the right-wing news media would actually support them the next time around. If there's one thing billionaires won't get behind is a stock market that is tanking and Trump has been stock market poison. The news media played a huge role in making Trump seem like a viable (rather than insane) choice in the 2024 election but even lately FOX News and CNBC have been critical of Trump's crazy tariff plans.
Now China, Japan, and Korea have announced a united response to those tariffs (how insanely bad of a leader do you have to be to get China and Japan actually working together?)

The constitution will not matter if he has the backing of the military. There is no one else left after that to enforce the constitution and it is just a piece of paper to Trump.
Signal-gate should have already led to the resignation of at least 4 of his cabinet. Nothing has happened, nothing will happen. The only person that really is vulnerable is Elon Musk, because it is the public consumer that has the power to punish him severely by boycotting his products and destroying his brand, although Trump could undoubtedly keep Musk rich by simply handing him more and more exclusive government contracts worth billions.

CTV Toronto has had constant teleprompter problems since last year, which is easy to notice when the anchors suddenly break from talking to scramble for their sheets or try to complete the narrative on the fly from memory.
