Global News Says Goodbye To A Newsman Who's Been There For 43 Years
His name is Mark Trueman but you probably remember his dad best. Peter Trueman was the first anchor at Global News when it signed on the air in 1974, and it was only natural that his son, Mark, would follow in his footsteps. You never really saw him on air but after starting at the station in a summer job, he graduated to becoming the show's Senior Producer.
And he's been doing it for almost 4 decades. On Friday, the station said farewell to a man most have known their entire careers on Barber Greene Road. (In true nepo fashion, Mark's son also works at Global, continuing the tradition.)
The station gave him a touching nearly 6 minute send-off Friday night, as he heads into retirement.

A very nice tribute and send off. Not many stations/ networks can claim 3 generations like that.

I wonder how long a person has to work at Global News in order to get an on-air sendoff. Two weeks ago, Global News Toronto's Shallima Maharaj, who's been at Global for 12 years, and worked as both reporter and occasional news anchor, left the job to go work in Denver alongside her husband.
I don't recall Global doing any sort of farewell or acknowledgement of her last day. Viewers wouldn't even know about her departure unless they saw her socials.

Funny, CTV in Kitchener is always saying good bye on air to someone it seems. Even reporters that have only been with the company for two years even less, they always talk to the individual, sometimes even days before they are leaving and let the viewer know that "Friday is Sarah's last day". Then they will do it all again on the day they leave.
With Wil Aiello they let the viewers know about a week before he is leaving and he will likely get a highlight tape on Friday June 5th when he actually leaves. He already has had a story and video on line. And Wil has only been with the station for a little over 3 years. But he has been quite popular in his time here. He also has been involved a lot in the community outside of work.

^Well, I certainly expect smaller markets to have more of a revolving door as they tend to be feeders for the big leagues so farewells almost become a regular feature.
Good for Shallima, shame about the lack of farewell acknowledgement. Perhaps she said she didn't want one, perhaps the higher ups were happy to see her go. We'll never know.

I hate nepotism.
Through the years I have worked with numerous people who led charmed lives in news and broadcasting for being the child of an established star or simply for some reason favoured by management.
On the other hand I have also seen a few -- not many -- people who enjoy privilege from nepotism, but actually fail because they simply were no good at the job.
Don't know anything about Mark Trueman, but as his dad would have said, "that too is reality."

I don't think nepotism is inherently good or bad. I find it completely depends on the nepotee (if I can coin a word). My two experiences with a nepotism situation were both positive. Nobody worked harder than they did, like they were aware extra eyes were on them because they were related to so-and-so. And both of them are successful in the broadcast realm and still working in it today.
