SOWNY » Something Coming To AM 900? » August 25, 2025 3:20 pm |
For what it is worth, in North York most evenings/overnights 900 is dominated by a combo of WURD-Philadelphia and WKDA-Lebanon TN. WURD supposedly running 124 watts at night and WKDA supposedly running 136 watts I believe. As sunrise approaches WCPA in Clearfield PA and WACA in Laurel MD are also present. I just hope I can snag Prince Albert (CKBI) before this move actually happens.
I did note CHIN on during the nightmiddle at 2 a.m. about two weeks ago. No trouble hearing what KXEL-Waterloo ("where Iowa comes to kvetch) was up to at that time.

For a town its size, London radio listeners are not well served. With the exception of CBC everything else all sounds the same. I listen to SXM almost exclusively.
When I'm in a real city like Toronto, Montreal or Tampa Bay, I rarely even turn on the SXM. But London is a radio wasteland. How do 92.7, 95.9 and 97.5 sound the same? Toss in not one but two campus-community stations (94.9, 106.9). And three CBC stations. Not to mention stations in immediately outlying areas, like Woodstock, St. Thomas. Not bad for a town...
I find that 1290 (CJBK) and 1410 (CKSL) sound the same to me.

You're more likely to hear WMFN Petone IL (Black Information Network), WHLO Akron OH and WOI Ames IA (NPR), among other closer-ins that now run all night. WMFN is consistently strong in second place under CFIQ in the Kawarthas.
Would also make it easier to hear WSM Nashville on 650 without the 640 splatter. And CFCO (before they move to FM permanently) and WSBN-Washington and WLAP-Lexington on 630.

What about Scarborobluffsradiof99's favourite station 820-CHAM, which moved down from 1280 to 820.
If I'm not mistaken this enabled the Pearson Airport Station to move to 1280 from 530, which enabled 790-Brampton to move to 530 once the other 530 station in Fort Erie moved to FM.

There are always a few ridings where the winner is a pretty much well a foregone conclusion. However, one should never assume victory is assured, Hello Pierre and Jagmeet. In the Newfoundland riding of Terra Nova-The Peninsulas, Liberal candidate defeated the Conservative candidate by a mere 12 votes. The Liberals defeated the Bloc Quebecois in the riding of Terrebonne by a massive 35 votes. Judging by these examples, your vote really does count.
I bet that the Terra Nova-The Peninsulas election coverage on VOCM would have been quite interesting.

Just got ujp to DX site last night. Was gonna hook coax to two outdoor loop antennas and DX but with 3-4 feet of new snow on the ground I'm not sure I can manage that during daylight today, never mind at night last night... I can almost climb onto parts of the roof...
POSTSCRIPT: Well, that was shockingly easy. My first strategy was to shovel pathways. I quickly realized this would take a few hours and exhaust me. I then realized I can swim, and the snow is just crystalized water powder. And the snow is in drifts. Some were indeed as high as 4 feet. Others maybe a foot. Directional west loop antenna is fixed in place, just needed to get coax and an amp onto the west end. I changed the route of my temporary south-north loop antenna, which gets folded up and collapsed when I'm not here, to be more ne-sw to make it easier to access. I'll be ready when sunset arrives, but I betcha CKTB will be back!
Here's hoping that you are wrong and it was worth putting up the antenna. At 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. WTEL-Philadelphia was duking it out with WTVN. I know that WTEL and WTVN certainly would not be worth you driving up to Four Mile Lake.

When I listen to my radio over these next two weeks, I'm quite sure I won't hear any mention of TS on 1240 WJMC Rice Lake WI, 1089 TalkSport in Brookmans Park UK, or whatever else happens to fade in. All it takes is avoiding certain frequencies.
I can confirm that this morning (the first day of the Taylor Swift concerts) that 1240 WJMC Rice Lake WI came out of the CBS news with a female announcer who led off with local weather. No mention of what it would be like outside of the Rogers Centre. Earlier at 6 a.m. on co-channel WSDR Sterling IL there also was no mention of Taylor Swift, just a plug for the Sauk Valley YWCA.

From Kawarthas I have heard IDs from three: WABY Watervliet NY (Rock-pop); WKDA Franklin TN (adult standards), WURD (African American talk, possibly also the one with jazz. I haven't set up my outdoor antennas yet for the coming AM season, or done any serious listening. These just from quick moments on a portable. One London DXer also heard a Georgia African American gospel station. With CHIN running daytime only on 1540 at night, a few of have heard ZNS1 from Nassau Bahamas. Last night they were running African American gospel music.
In addition to WKDA and WURD being there most of the time on 900, In Toronto I've been hearing a lot of WFIA Louisville at 6 a.m. with religious programming. WKDA for me seems to to be most dominant during the nightmiddle. And as I type this Cuba (Radio Progreso) is in there with the same programing as on 890.
Other 900s noted since CHML stopped coming down for breakfast: WCPA-Clearfield PA, WJWL-Georgetown DE, WACA-Laurel MD and WKDW-Staunton VA

Are they completely off the air or just at such low power that you can't hear them? I used to work there in another lifetime (my very first "volunteer" job in radio) and before the daytime pattern change, they were at 500 watts. You could barely get them across the street.
Definitely off. In North York, unti last week I had no problem hearing them in the nightmiddle, but it was easy to hear KXEL underneath. Now KXEL just sounds as strong as the adjacent Cincinnati on 1530 and Windsor on 1550.

I gather nobody has noticed (or cares) that CHIN-1540 seems to have just decided not to broadcast anything at all after about 9 p.m. and overnights (where the old-time radio shows used to be). Although the website does say "Italian Streaming". I don't think "Italian Streaming" means a relay of KXEL's Red Eye Radio or Brother Stair's Overcomer Ministry.

In the good old days when CHIN was still a daytime-only station, when they went off at sunset you could often get some other interesting daytime-only American stations before they signed off at their local sunsets (in additon to KXEL, WPTR-Albany or Radio Bahamas).
