What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

The linked article lists 5 songs the author says makes him reach for the dial when he's listening in his car. I totally disagree with him on his choices, but to each his own. But it made me wonder: is there an oldie, overplayed or just disliked, that makes you go elsewhere?

I probably have a few that would only come to mind when I hear them (although Lady Marmalade by LaBelle is one I can think of.) And even if you don't hate the tune, is there one you think is overplayed?

5 1960s pop hits that should be permanently retired

Re: What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

You really need a better source of click bait. 🤨

As for channel changers:
Most of Trooper's catalogue.
Gino Vannelli's 'Black Cars'.  Come to think of it, just about every song on Giant FM 91.7.

The minute 680 CFTR plays some syndicated fluff feature regarding what some pseudoceleb is up to.

Anything by Journey especially that song that killed off The Sopranos.

Re: What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

I have a couple of station changing songs!

Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks
Stay Awhile - The Bells
Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves   (Over played)
Last Song - Edward Bear (too sappy for me)
Last Christmas - Wham! (Seasonal hate)
You’re Having my Baby - Paul Anka. (Poor taste lyrics)

I have more, but you get the idea!

100% agree on "Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks"
& I'll add "Sometimes When We Touch - Dan Hill"

Agreed!  For the amount of airtime it gets there, I thought it was CanCon! 😁

Re: What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

Too many auditorium tested songs.  I'd always rather hear a lesser hit:

Every Breath You Take - The Police (play "Spirits in the Material World", "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" or Synchronicity II instead)
Stayin' Alive - Bee Gees (play "Tragedy", "More Than A Woman" or "Inside Out" instead)
Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go) - Wham (play "Everything She Wants")

As for CanCon, rid of the overplayed Harlequin, Saga (play "On The Loose" instead of "Wind Him Up"), Kim Mitchell (play "All We Are" or "Expedition Sailor" instead of "Go For Soda"), and less Great Big Sea (lookin' at you Bounce/Legend 102.9)

Re: What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

My solution .. via my Desktop, Laptop, Kitchen or Bedroom internet radio .. is my genre mix of choice via https://www.musiccityroadhouse.com/index.html
Blues, Southern Rock & Honky Tonk works best for me.

My only irritation is too much Allman Brothers as most is meandering Southern Rock Jazz; just not my cup of tea .. i'm more of Team Skynyrd  : )) ..

I transferred my record collection to a PC and automated it.  Now I have a great variety of music.  I can hear Post Malone next to Gary Numan, Bread, Rainbow, Talk Talk, Jimi Hendrix, Duane Eddy, Sophia Simmons, Paul Young and Lola Young ... all in one hour.  Now THAT'S a mix of music.  If radio played an unpredictable, all over the place set of music like that, I might return to listening.  Top 40 used to feel more like that back in the early 80s

Re: What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

Highway to Hell - AC/DC
Stairway to Heaven - The Zep
Hotel California - Eagles
Bad Guy - Billie Eilish
Abracadabra - Steve Miller Band

Jeez are they all good songs, but even being <35 years on this planet they have been overplayed on too many stations. Sometimes feels like I can never escape!

Tweeter and The Monkey Man, and currently that Benson Boone one that is played every 20 minutes still since  January.

Great classic tunes but that we know overly all-to-well .. I'm a huge Skynyrd fan but I'll add "Freebird" to the "change the channel" list.

I know this could get me in hot water with some, but when I hear Bohemian Rhapsody, the channel changes.  Another classic that doesn't go away and is overplayed.  AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long is getting into this territory for me as well..

It also depends on what you are doing.  If you are out at the pub with some friends and these songs come on either on the radio or satellite, fine you are in the mood.  You almost expect to hear these songs when you are out.  But if I am in the car or listening at home, my tolerance and enjoyment level for some songs goes way down.  Strange.

Re: What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

You rarely hear it over the air, but Vikki Carr's version of 'With Pen in Hand' is a prime example of the over the top vocalist.  This thread piqued my curiosity, and it turns out it's a Bobby Goldsboro penned clunker.

Come to think of it, anyone singing that song gets immediately switched to my static filled feed from 900 CHML. 😁

Agree on ALL of these.  Again, if playing Queen, I'd rather "Play The Game" or "Body Language".  Please!  Surprise Me!  Dig something out of the vaults.

Even when I used to drink, I'd hate hearing any of these when I went out.

Re: What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

I think I've mentioned this here before,  but anything by the Tragically Hip makes me change thae station, particularly "50 Mission Cap".

"Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Seger is another one.

Re: What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

I have a bit of a morbid playlist...it is about songs you would end your life listening to.

1. Fast Cars-Tracey Chapman
2. I started a joke-Bee Gees
3. At 17- Janis Ian
4. All by myself-Eric Carmen
5. Alone again naturally-Gilbert O'Sullivan
6. Cat's in the cradle-Harry Chapin
and
7. In the year 2525- Zager and Evans
8. Age of Destruction-Barry McGuire
9. The sound of silence-Simon and Garfunkel
10. So it is Christmas-John Lennon

I would include Season's in the Sun, but it has been mentioned and the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot, also not a feel good song...both would make you more depressed, so, just avoid them and play a little Green Day...

These songs are some of the most depressing to listen to...if you have been having mental health challenges, do not even play them on YouTube page or your old Panasonic record player.

Re: What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

Completely agree when it comes to Walking On Sunshine, Katrina and the Waves ~ ick.
Bon Jovi, Living on a Prayer and everything they did except for "Runaway"
Any song from The Joshua Tree by U2
Anything from Glass Tiger.
Drake's "music", his vocal tone reminds me of the whawha whoawha teacher from the Charlie Brown cartoons.
Aerosmith, Walk this way.
The Stones, Paint It Black
And I've never liked The Tragically Hip. Respect them yes but listen to their songs, no thanks.

How do you feel about the original version of Cocaine by J.J. Cale? It rarely gets played and I personally prefer it to the Clapton version.

Re: What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

Hahaha..I think you have asked me this before.  JJ Cale's is better, but I just don't like the song.  I find it boring musically, repetitive with depressing lyrics. Clapton's live take is too long, too slow and goes nowhere.  Had to play Clapton's "hit" version a lot when I was in radio and I would turn the speakers down in the studio or listen to something else.   I played the song at least once, sometimes twice a day for months when it was on the charts.

Also never liked Hard To Handle by The Black Crowes.  Another sloppy boring song in my opinion...

However I knew a lot of people liked both of these tunes, so I kept my distaste for them to myself when I was on air.  Never uttered a bad word about either.

Re: What Song Makes You Change The Radio Station?

I agree with three of the five choices listed in the original article. Entire local terrestrial rock/pop radio is a button changer for me. Can't listen to Boom, Q 107 or Zoomer but as a huge Beach Boys fan I have to point out Kokomo for the ick factor.
