The old Andy Griffith Show used to do spots for General Foods featuring Andy and the cast. They were usually set in the Taylor's kitchen with Andy and Opie enjoying Post cereal or Andy and Barney discussing Sanka decaf coffee.
One memorable one featured the normally silent Leon, played by Ron Howard's little brother Clint, who finally uttered his first word when Andy asked him to describe Jello pudding (or puddin' as Andy called it.)
Leon said it was goooood!
I'm too young to remember them at the time, but they were released as part of the show's DVD box set. They're also available on YouTube.

Go ahead is one of my biggest pet pet peeves. Don't go ahead, just DO it!
Others that drive me nuts:
Tempature instead of temperature.
The redundancy of "tomorrow morning at 9 a.m."
Using the word "less" when it should be "fewer."
And the annoying overuse of the word super, as in I'm super excited, or it's super important.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have some clouds to shout at.

I too bought 45s as a youngster, mainly because they were the hits I heard on the radio, and because my parents were not music lovers, so all they had was one of those old portable phonographs. When I was 17 I was able to scrounge up enough to buy a secondhand Viking stereo with a turntable and built in radio tuner. It was just slightly better than the old phonograph, but good enough to finally invest in albums.
My first was Universal Juveniles by Max Webster, followed quickly by The River from Bruce Springsteen, and I was on my way ...

Stern said that Giamatti nailed the part so well that it felt like he was back in the moment when he worked at the station, despite Giamatti not having done any research on the man his character was based on.

That was a good read. I was particularly impressed to read that Al Michaels has had the same spotter alongside him in the booth for over 45 years. I admire that kind of loyalty.

There is one television spot that drives me to spin cycle. It's the Bell Art Exibit ad where viewers get to see his bad era and good era. He dropped cable for Bell Fibe. For some reason, I absolutely detest the woman portraying the art display hostess. Her oversized glasses, deep throaty voice, and snobby delivery could have something to do with it. But when she gleefully exclaims "It's A Masterpiece" at the end, that tops the cringe factor for me. A very close second is the Uber Eats ad where the couple attempts to get into a solidly booked restaurant. Out of the blue. a guy appears claiming that "Perhaps I can help" Get us a table? Oh no! Can't do that. Then he starts explaining how wonderful the sponsor's product is. I find him to be arrogant and extremely condescending. This ad failed miserably in attracting me to try their product. To be fair, no ad would have worked. I have never had any desire to use any of the food delivery services currently available.
I couldn't agree more about the Fibe ad. That woman's voice is very off-putting.
Speaking of off-putting voices, while watching the Saturday Night Live music special this week, I was shocked at the sound of Miley Cyrus' voice. Perhaps she was suffering from laryngitis, but she sounded like she had a 50 year four-pack-a-day habit.

This is so accurate. I know it gives an opportunity for lots of action and a big chase, but it makes most TV cops look like they're not too bright.

To save money, we used to buy Ampex tape in bulk, called pancakes because they were just spools of tape stacked up on top of each other separated by styrofoam. They were cheaper because they didn't come with reels. So every few months I'd make a trip to Active.
They always seemed to have a bunch of used empty Ampex metal reels. They sold for about a dollar each and I would buy up the their whole stock. Back at the station I'd take the reels apart, pop in the pancakes, put the reels back together and voila, Ampex reels at a fraction of the price.
I kind of miss the days of using analog tape, and dealing with grease pencils and splicing tape, but I must admit editing digital audio is so much easier.

According to all the publicity that was launched earlier this year, a 10 AM hour of BT was supposed to launch with Cheryl Hickey and Tracy Moore back on Sept 9. But as of now it’s only been Judy Justice at 10 AM.
That's what I thought too, that the 10 am slot would be an exclusively "lifestyle" version of BT with Moore and Hickey. Not that I really care, as those lifestyle shows don't appeal to me at all. But I wish they would put something other than Judge Judy on. Granted, I don't think I've ever watched a full show, but of what I've seen, I find her to be a thoroughly unpleasant person.
And speaking of CITY TV, I've been noticing a lot of dropouts on the channel recently, with both audio and video disappearing for a second or so and the screen going to black. I was wondering if it is the station's signal, or a problem with my provider, Bell Fibe.
Has anyone else noticed these glitches?
SOWNY » How Much Would These TV Innovations Have Cost You Today? » December 7, 2024 12:04 pm |
My first HD TV was a 40 inch Sony that I bought in 2007. I got in on a great sale at Future Shop and paid about $2,500, which was several hundred dollars off.
But it seems to have been a good investment as it remains the TV I use every day and it still performs as well as the day it arrived. In fact, I still routinely have guests who comment on the quality of the picture and colour.
I've thought about upgrading to a larger screen, but I figure why fix what's not broken?
BTW, my parents bought the family's first colour TV in 1970. It was a 19 inch Zenith and cost about $500. They paid an equal amount for an antenna tower with an electric rotor. If the online inflation calculator I used is to be believed, that's a shocking $7,800 in 2024 dollars.

You don't know how good you have it until its gone. I sure miss those high end boom boxes from the late 70's into the early 80's. Some of these were literally full featured mini stereos with exceptional cassette decks. They sounded great.
JVC, Panasonic, Sharp, Pioneer and a few others had some amazing units. Sadly it is hard to find one where the cassette deck is in working order due to the rubber belts and rollers that were part of the cassette mechanism. Ones that are fully functional are collectable and command a high price.
I had a monster boom box that I bought in 1983. It was a JVC PC55, a behemoth of a machine that I used as my main home stereo for a number of years. It weighed about 10 pounds and took EIGHT D cell batteries so carrying it out an about was not at all practical.
It had detachable speakers, a good tuner, plenty of power and rear jacks that allowed me to connect a turntable and a CD player. The unit had an LCD information screen and the cassette deck had solenoid controls which was pretty slick back in the day. And best of all it sounded great.
I had it up until 2020 when it finally gave up the ghost.

1050 CHUM in the mid 1970s.
I was pretty much glued to that station during my pre-teen and early teen years.
Q107 from the late 70s and early 80s.
As I got a bit older I migrated to the FM dial. I never found a connection with CHUM-FM or CFNY, but I really loved Q, especially Ted Woloshyn, then Scruff Connors in the morning and the Six O'clock Rock Report, which provided great rock music news when it was pretty hard to come by anywhere else.

Big screen TV or not, I find them almost impossible to read in the time they're shown.
I'm not sure how you fix this, but there has to be a better way than what they're doing now.I PVR almost everything these days [except sports] and it is difficult to read on screen texts on my 65" tv when I am sitting eight feet away in my lazyboy recliner. I still have to get close to the set to read the text.
This is a big pet peeve for me too. I thought one show found a solution, but it was not permanent.
I can't remember what show it was, but it was a prime time drama. When a character received a text, the phone was shown, but the text was printed in a very readable font on screen, similar to closed captioning. It was great.
Sadly it only lasted for one episode.
