BBC had all of the top ten shows in the UK yesterday. Some of the numbers are astounding not only because Christmas day is not normally a big day for OTA TV in North America, but also the fact that the UK's population is only about 68 million, and not one of the top ten was sports. The number one show had over 12 million viewers.
These are also live numbers of people tuning in. From Deadline..

UK networks make an effort to produce special episodes of series - sometimes series that haven't been seen in a few years. US television just has basketball (and more recently football) and reruns. So do US networks put no effort into Christmas because they know there's no audience or is there no audience because there's nothing to watch?
I suspect the church has something to do with it. I'm sure had the networks made an effort to produce Christmas Day programming in the 50s or 60s or even more recently, church leaders would have loudly protested.

I remember that there was usually a Bond movie on TV in the UK on Christmas Day, it was a bit of a thing guessing which one they’d air a couple of months out. Not sure if they do that anymore.

I'm not at all surprised that the Gavin and Stacey finale topped the ratings list. It's a hugely popular show and if YouTube clips are anything to go by, the cast has been all over radio and TV promoting it.
I hope we eventually get to see it here. I'm a huge fan of the show, but it never really seemed to take off on this side of the pond.

Here are the ratings from December 25th prime time in the US. Most popular show was an NBA basketball game with almost 5 million viewers. I wonder why Christmas TV is so big in the UK and why BBC dominates so much. But here, it is much different.

I only watch UK TV on Christmas and Boxing Day. (And A Christmas Story marathon on TBS & TNT here and there.)
I can see why the BBC took the top spot: Strictly Christmas special, Gavin & Stacey finale, Even though ratings tanked for Mrs. Brown's Boys, year over year, I still watch and enjoy it.

Don't forget the Dr. Who Christmas special, which always does very well.
