CityNews 24/7 channel's new look... with a new studio

The Rogers/Shaw money must've kicked in. CityNews Vancouver also has a set now AND its own 24/7 streaming channel.

Are they still reporting out of Yonge Dundas? The set looks like it may now be at One Mount Pleasant.

His LinkedIn headline says Former Reporter at Breakfast Television, and his Instagram just says TV Reporter.
OK  - Just looked at his latest instagram post. Walking into the CHCH Newsroom to Eminem's Without Me.

Wouldn’t be totally surprised if he was let go due some of his questionable posts that used to be on his IG profile. I remember seeing one where he mocked Christianity. I just checked and it’s no longer posted.

I agree, you really can't listen to Sandra that long without deciding you can drive with the radio off.

They haven't hosted together is a while. The last two weeks of December, it was Rick and Ed the Sock. Before that Sandra was solo. Months before that she was solo, but Rick returned saying they had a family vacation in Miami I believe.

Was he fired though? He has updated his instragram bio and removed references to Z103.5. One of his latest videos was him, Ed, and someone else pumping their fists to the music in the studio, but that video has been deleted. Twitter bio still says he works there, but he hasn't posted on there since September.

Maybe Sandra and Rick just didn't jive together, and one of them had to go.

A few people asked on an IG post where he was and he confirmed that he was no longer with Z because the early mornings were getting to him. Whether this is true or not, I’m not too sure. It does seem odd that there was no announcement or send off prior to his departure. Based on the series of events from December, I’m going to speculate that Sandra and Rick didn’t get along and a decision was made to let Rick go.

I’m not downplaying her allegations, but I feel her comments and claims are a bit of a head scratcher. Especially the one where she compared the salaries of the workers in the weather department and how she made “significantly less” than her two male counterparts. Looking at the weather staff, the two male employees she speaks of are Meteorologists, so it would make perfect sense that they are paid more.

So the big question now is - what happens to Ms. LaFlamme? She may do a recap for a day on City and then what? They just don't really have a place for her and I can only assume she did this to increase her profile, as well as wanting to cover one of the biggest stories in decades.

Someone here has suggested Global National. I'm not sure - they have Dawna Friesen and they just hired Farah Nasser. What would LaFlamme do?

CBC is a possibility, although I wonder if someone who is so fiercely independent on how things are done would react under their stricter rules.

So who's left? Certainly she's not going back to CTV anytime soon. CNN? CNBC? Would a U.S. network want her and if so, would she be willing to go down there? I'm not convinced that will happen.

Perhaps a columnist in one of the Toronto papers? But would that satisfy her? She doesn't strike me as someone who would be happy with a podcast, but that seems to be the direction many former broadcasters are going.

This is one to watch and I suspect that we have not seen the last of her. Just where and why is another story.

Even if there were an opening at City, I doubt Lisa would be a good fit for the network. Not a fault of her or City's own, it's just a very different network from CTV where she wouldn't get the tabloid style line of questioning that she did during her BT hits (i.e. What do people waiting in line do if they have to use the washroom?) Imagine Lisa anchoring the 5/6pm newscast with Richard Southern's "interesting news stories of the day"... I don't see it.

Been watching City’s coverage all morning and I must say, Lisa is doing a fine job. The technicals are a bit lacking, but it does the job. I like how Lisa has a truly national mindset to broadcasting, specifically when she was explaining the road system in London and one of the commentators kept comparing them to Ontario roads where Lisa quickly jumped in and asked “if we can get out of Ontario for a moment”.

Why Rogers? Because there’s no one else.

If Lisa weren’t available, I wonder who Rogers would’ve tapped to lead the coverage as I can’t possibly think of anyone in their current roster that’s suitable for this type of event. Possibly Tracy Moore?

For those of you who don't remember, yes we are talking about Rick "the Temp" Campanelli circa MuchMusic (1994-2005) and who also subsequently worked as a co-host at ET Canada until 2017.

He also had brief exposure to radio back in 2016 as one of the co-hosts to CFNY's morning show alongside Fred and Mel.

It’s interesting because I remember Rick briefly going back to City in 2019, but never heard about his whereabouts or what happened after then.

Time will tell.

Due to local content rules, I can't see them cutting CityNews again after cutting BT in the same markets. BT was the only thing at one point of keeping them in compliance.  Changes would need to happen at the CRTC level for this to happen or they would have to make up the local hours by adding other local programming.

They might start shaving off the weekend broadcasts and stick to weekdays only.

I also wondered why BT Toronto stopped using their Yonge/Dundas view during their broadcasts.
Now it makes sense.

I wondered why Rogers all of a sudden introduced a “National” broadcast hour at the start of COVID, now we know why. It will probably be operated in the same way as it did during the CHUM days where “The New” (now CTV 2) stations broadcasted the BT Toronto feed and would break to the local stations for news and traffic updates.

What’s interesting is that BT is now going back to all 6 markets, so I suspect that the local CityNews broadcasts outside of Toronto will eventually be cut. Breakfast Television names Roger Petersen as new co-host

(Note: Above link is to a Toronto Star article, so if you've already used your monthly 5, don't click it.)

So, Stella Acquisto is now the “community correspondent”? Sounds to me like a live-eye host.

Because it prevents Rogers from using it to destroy 1040. They won't sell 1410.

So someone should rent Rogers a frequency...?
AM 730 makes good sense. It will be interesting to see what Corus thinks of all this.

Corus might be cooperative. After all, they did partner with Rogers for the Radioplayer app.

I can see Rogers pulling out of the conventional tv market and sticking with specialty broadcasting.. especially if the CRTC doesn't grant their request with the proposed Omni model.

Citytv has been a pain in their side since day 1 of acquiring it and it's been almost 10 years under Rogers and can't turn a profit.  Just my two thoughts.
