NPR's weekly media show is addressing this with a nicely detailed history of VOA in the greater context of shortwave broadcasting.

Recommended for radio lovers. I'm enjoying it.

As a Chicago fella, he likely has all of the Styx albums and a generous appreciation of Liz Phair and Veruca Salt (even the in-between 'Veruca Starship' records). He will undoubtedly also be familiar with the WaxTrax scene - if I were a betting man I'd wager he had a Revolting Cocks tour tee underneath that smelly tunic.

I think that some appropriate political discourse is beneficial. There are things occurring now that have not occurred in the first world for a very long time, and many in the broadcasting industry are being affected by it. Let them talk it out.

I considered Rush's '2112' to the list. It is of course cancon and replete with the juvenile libertarianism that Neil Peart had a boner for, but Bastille Day seemed more appropriate.

Hemispheres and The Trees are also candidates, but they're more political philosophy.

Edit - crap I forgot. The Tide is Turning by Roger Waters. Actually, most of his 'Radio K.A.O.S.' would've been applicable to the earlier radio song thread, despite the loathsome 80's-era overproduction.

Mostly left-leaning, sorry. It tends to be artistically difficult to write angry songs about punching down.

To get back to radio for a moment, I was stunned to hear a spot running repeatedly on AM640 Wednesday, featuring the voice of Ezra Levant of Rebel News.

He talks about Mark Carney and questions his qualifications for Prime Minister, indicating he wasn't even living in Canada until recently. The group identified as the sponsor is an organization called "For Canada," a Rebel offshoot.

Given his reputation and what happened at last week's debate, I have to say I was surprised the ad was on the air. But if I'm not mistaken, the station may not have had the ability to refuse them airtime. There are rules during election time that allocate certain commercial time to various groups and I could be wrong, but Corus may not have had any choice but to allow it on their airwaves.

Does anyone know what the rules are in this area?

The Tyee waded into the details of Levant's recent shit-molesting, providing some background other media outlets have been oddly avoiding.

Beg to differ.  I want to hear how the song was played during its chart run.  That's how it's remembered.  Listen the LP version of Simple Minds' "Don't You Forget About Me".  It's just added fluff.  Here especially, editing is favourable to the song.

Besides, what does gender have to do with anything?  Sheesh!

Evidently you're not a Doors fan.

Radio edits are a hair above the hack jobs K-Tel would do to cram as much content as possible on their crummy compilations. On par with record company re-sequencing albums for cassette editions that use as little tape as possible.

If it wasn't good enough for the album then it's not good enough for the airwaves.

Actually the ad with the two older guys has been a last minute decision.  The Conservatives are not polling well in the 55+ demo, especially with men.  This is a shock, and supposedly they have had soft numbers 55+ for some time now.  With Carney entering the race the situation has got worse.

I found the 'golf coots' ad quite amusing.

"Hey old white non-union golfers who certainly aren't a parasitic drain on the economy! Please vote for us!"
