SOWNY » Todd C. Slater Bids Adieu » December 22, 2024 1:21 pm |
Mr. Slater has been the host of his Simply Real Estate show on Newstalk 1010 for the past decade.
Today he announced he was ending the show to concentrate on his podcast.
Mr. Slater thanked all those who made time for him during his hour long program over the last ten + years & had special thanks for Iain Grant.
Will be interesting to see who or what fills the slot starting next Sunday.

SOWNY » "Train Wreck Of A Start" » December 13, 2024 8:54 am |
I was surprised to hear Heather Seamen still reading the news on 1010 at 6:06 this morning. Normally by that time the newscast has wrapped up - the traffic reporter has had their say & the weather forecast is in play before the handoff to host John Moore.
Mr. Moore didn't hit the airwaves until 6:08 - several minutes behind schedule & the first words out of his mouth..."well that was a train wreck of a start".
I tuned in at 6:06 and heard all of the above but missed the "problem". I'll speculate the connection with newscaster Seaman was wonky making her unavailable for several minutes.
Did anyone catch this live at the top of the hour?

I would also suggest the black and white YouTube clip from January 1963 of Brenda Lee on The Ed Sullivan Show.
She is accompanied by a live orchestra and her full vocal prowess is on display with her rendition of All Alone Am I.
It runs 2 mintes 55 seconds and would be time well spent.
It is truly dynamic & I think would serve as a real eye opener for those who aren't familiar with anything but her Christmas music.
She was outstanding!

SOWNY » Who Had The Best Election Coverage On Tuesday? » November 6, 2024 10:03 am |
To answer your question RA I stayed up till past 3 a.m. & viewed Trumps speech live.
I gave the old tv clicker one hell of a workout as I visited some channels I hadn't paid attention to in years.
Of everything I saw I will admit that I liked the coverage provided by NBC. They included Lester Holt & Kristen Welker at their main table. Ms. Welker who hosts the storied program Meet The Press looked like she'd seen a ghost as the numbers began to roll in.
NBC was entertaining and really quick with the numbers
From channels 15 (NBC) to 17 (Fox) to 21(CBS) & of course channel 33 which is CNN in my neighbourhood. Then up to 26 (CBC) to see Rosie Barton squirming & looking more and more uncomfortable as the hours passed. Several quick visits to channel 28 (ABC) & then on to channel 61 (CTV News channel).
Around the horn - click - click - click all night long
Well worth the effort
NBC for the win followed by CNN in my books

Sorry to read this.
Never was impressed by his actions later in life but talent-wise he made me laugh.
One Bullard story I remember with genuine fondness was him telling how he & his brother - while hormonal teenagers - would take up positions - one in front of the home television & one behind making every possible effort to improve their crappy reception while tuning in to the Baby Blue Movie on City.
"Is that any better"? "How about that"?
So so funny

SOWNY » Triskadekaphobia » September 13, 2024 2:24 pm |
Had to shake my head today listening to Amanda Galbraith as she filled in for Vassy on the noon hour radio broadcast. She was talking to her two guests about superstitions etc. with today being Friday the 13th.
Then, proud as punch she told her guests & by extension her listening audience that there is "actually a word" that describes people who are afraid of the number 13. Ms. Galbraith then haltingly spoke the word saying she hoped she could "get it right" & of course she completely managled each & every syllable. It was a train wreck.
I'll bet her two learned guests know what triskadekaphobia means but they remained silent. They just let her dangle. And I suspect the vast majority of her audience were surprised too.
How do you get to be approaching middle age, host a national radio program and have zero association with that word? I've always thought she was weak. IMO she's confirmed that yet again

Do agencies not test the likability of their ads on consumers first? The other ads that I know drive the Board members nuts are the Subaru ads and the one with the screaming girlfriends over getting a great travel deal!
But this Walmart ad is driving me to go to Buffalo and Target for my back to school clothes.
That Walmart ad is pretty terrible
As an aside my wife and I were in our local Walmart a few mornings ago when I happened to notice a mid aisle display of childrens rubber boots. Not winter boots but more desgined for the wet weather of the fall season.
Those goddamn things were priced at $55.00

SOWNY » Bill Carroll Slams His Old Boss » August 27, 2024 8:51 am |
Just happened to catch Bill Carroll the other morning rant and rave about his time at NewsTalk 1010 - more to the point his departure to California back in 2010.
Now the morning host at CFRA Ottawa, Bill took nearly two minutes of prime air time to blast his immmediate superior during his final days at 1010. He lamented that the private offices where he and other hosts would prep for their shows were permanetly taken away while the boss redecorated. Hosts were sent to a glass-walled conference style room to do show prep. Carroll said the problems began immediately with staff tapping on the glass, or waving or enteing the room to chit chat. He said things got so bad that other employees -- and I quote -- "began to think that Bill's an ass" because he didn't appreciate the constant interuptions. Those private offices by the way, according to Bill, were left with just a telephone in them so staff could make "personal" calls. He added that hosts would often have to sit on the floor while doing their show prepraration.
Things got so bad that he said he wouldn't arrive at the station for his show until just minutes before air time. When confronted by his superior who said he wanted him in the station two hours before his show he replied he simply couldn't do his reading & research at the station any longer. Shortly thereafter it was off to L.A. for Bill and his family.
Still bitter after 12 years, I was all ears but I'm not sure it was of any great interest to his Ottawa morning audience. Oh and he finished his rant by calling his former boss at 1010 "an idiot".

Does anyone remember the series "Here Come the 70s" that aired on CTV at the beginning of the decade (and was repeated until the late 70s?). It was produced by Douglas Leiterman, formerly of This Hour Has Seven Days and had a very provocative opening, especially for a network show 50 years ago, featuring a nude woman walking into Lake Ontario.
Yes I remember it very well. One of my favourite shows for obvious reasons!

Had a Bell techician over to the house today
A clap of thunder Monday morning that sounded like two high powered rifle shots in quick succession knocked us off line in a big way.
So here comes "Dave" and he works for about 90 minutes, half his time spent in the outside heat testing lines etc. & the rest in several diffent rooms in our home. As I was directing Dave to our basement for a look at a few more boxes and cables & just where he needed to go he said to me "you should be in radio".
Haven't been on the air for decades but I took Daves' remark as a compliment & my media career flashed before my eyes. LOL
Anyone else get the same sort of response from people/strangers they meet in everyday life?

NBC news was a clear leader in the crucial minutes & hours following the event.
NBC's coverage was superb with eye witnesses and local officals on the air well before their competition
CBC took about 45 minutes to get its first mention of the shooting on air
CTV beat them by about two or three minutes
A very unfortunate turn of events

The ambient background noise - the vehicle in motion was quite noticeable & because of that it might be unfair to pass judgement.

Mr. Moore did run just such a clip from a female listener on this mornings topic du jour -- the clear garbage bag edict for parts of cottage country.
It was a bit tough to dechipher what she was saying as Moore suggested when she finished that the plentiful background noise indicated she "may have been driving as she was speaking or perhaps she was a passenger"
