Kudos to Frank Cohn, for sticking it out through numerous owners, and a who's who of Toronto radio co-hosts.
25 years with a simple format.
Congrats Frank and to many more years of good advice..

Can't explain it because I am in no way a handy guy but I end up hearing Frank just about every weeknd.

He just kind of sneeks up on me I guess

25 years is a long time in this business.

Speaking of working for numerous owners one day 3 or 4 years back Frank listed every co-host he had worked with.

Yes the station used to give him a co-host to help out & keep the showing moving along.

His list went on and on and on & on.

Two or three dozen people mentioned I'm certain.

It became both hilarious and a bit ridiculous

Congrats to you Frank

Well done!

I first met Larry circa 1971 a few years before he landed in Guelph.

He was a DJ in those days & I phoned in and won the full set of Crusin' albums from him. Those 8 or 9 lp's featured great old rock and roll programming from the top American DJ's of the late 50' & early 60's. I was just 15 or maybe 16 but really loved that set and played the heck out of some of those platters. Went to the radio station to collect them. That's where I met him.

Larry was just a young pup back then with a Beatles-style hair cut. Looking back I suspect it was his first on air job.

Phone rang this evening and from the ring tone I could tell it was "long distance".

Checked the little call display window on our landline phone while muttering "...who the fuck is that..."

Lo & behold it's Numeris

Happy to reward some of my favourite radio hosts in the coming weeks with my support

Not to get off topic RA but thought it was worth mentioning here that WABC New York currently has 3 on air performers sidelined from their jobs because they are running for political office.

Curtis Sliwa who is standing for mayor of New York City along with Anthony Weiner and WABC overnight man Frank Morano have all been taken off the air by the station owner John C. until their various political races have been determind.

Three announcers from the same station put on leave at one time for political races - that has to be a first - has left WABC management to find creative ways to adjust.

So far so good...

According to the article, CJAD is the #1 English language radio station in the 12+ demo, with a whopping 32.1 share, up a bit from the last book.

CJAD was sometimes referred to as the CFRB of Montreal, but it's really not anymore. How is that 1010's sister station gets such incredibly high numbers, while its Toronto counterpart can't even register a 2?

Why can't 'RB take whatever CJAD is doing and try it here? They're obviously doing something right. The comparison between the two is telling. They'll almost certainly never be #1 again here. But can they take a lesson from another Bell station about how to do it right?

What is CJAD doing that NewsTalk 1010 isn't?

Heard the long time CJAD morning man talking about people "smelling their own farts" the other day while in conversation with John Moore on their regular 7:25 a.m. session. Mr. Moore does an "entertainment" feature Monday through Friday on CJAD.

Or how about the two male hosts at TSN 690 - the Montreal sports station who spent at least 5 minutes this week  talking about peeing in the shower - who peed in the shower & their parents showering habits. One set of parents from one of those two according to him ALWAYS showered together & still do!!

I couldn't believe what I was hearing

So it's not always a bed of roses when it comes to programming in Montreal RA

Good riddance

Premier Ford will make an appearance on The Sunday Money Show with host Alan Small on Sunday January 19th, just a day before the inauguration of Donald Trump. The topic will of course be the threatened Trump tariffs.

It's interesting to note that The Sunday Money Show is a long time paid hour of programming on 1010 & I'm guessing this is the first time such a prominent guest has agreed to make an appearance. But good on Premier Ford. He continues to lead the way on this side of the border & look for any and every avenue to chat up Canadians.

I assume the conversation will be prerecorded but I do not know that for certain.

Sunday at 2 p.m. on 1010

I am divided on the delivery quality of all of the younger voices now on 680.  They just seem to lack the gravitas of past on-air folks.  Keep in mind, those who've departed from Rogers were not all older.  I think Sladjana is a mid-millennial (maybe born in the 80s), but she has an experienced-sounding delivery that belies her age.  Just a terrific listen.  However, the younger folks have an uneasiness in their approach, and sound "green".  On one hand, I miss hearing an authoritative delivery; I want the anchors to sound as though they know more than me.  On the other hand, perhaps it's better that Gen Z broadcasters sound like Gen Zs, so that they can relate to, and attract, a younger audience.

Problem is, is that younger audience interested?

Very well said Jody!

Simply spot on

Mr. Irresistible...Sweet Daddy Siki

My family lived in Barrie in the early 60's. I can vividly recall Siki appearing on CKBB radio on the day of a card that evening at the old Barrie Arena on Dunlop Street. It was 1962 & he was in fine form telling the area farmers to lock up their daughters because he was in town. After all he WAS Mr. Irresistible!!

And I know that when he toured with his country band he would oftern do interviews with country disc jockeys along the way. He even dropped in to do a live interview with Peter Darrell in St. Catharines on his all night show circa 1974. Just one of many I'm sure while on the road.

As someone who back in the day followed the "sport" & had a few "back stage" contacts I never ever knew his real name. He told everyone his name was Reg so everyone referred to him as Reg Siki. Only learned his given name in his obituary. Kayfabe to the very end

Oh and one more thing. Some in hockey circles - I think might have been Brian McFarlane on the Leaf tv broadcasts used to liken the late Eddie Shack to Mr. Siki for their entertainment value. McFarlane would sometimes call Eddie..."Sweet Daddy Shacky"...always gave me a chuckle!

It’s the man in the middle at 0:50 that I thought might be George Clark - but I could be wrong too.

That gentleman is the late Frank Kovacs. And that cigarette in his left hand is a Pall Mall plain. Just thinking about that brand of cigarette starts me coughing

I was surprised to hear Heather Seamen still reading the news on 1010 at 6:06 this morning. Normally by that time the newscast has wrapped up - the traffic reporter has had their say & the weather forecast is in play before the handoff to host John Moore.

Mr. Moore didn't hit the airwaves until 6:08 - several minutes behind schedule & the first words out of his mouth..."well that was a train wreck of a start".

I tuned in at 6:06 and heard all of the above but missed the "problem". I'll speculate the connection with newscaster Seaman was wonky making her unavailable for several minutes.

Did anyone catch this live at the top of the hour?

I would also suggest the black and white YouTube clip from January 1963 of Brenda Lee on The Ed Sullivan Show.
She is accompanied by a live orchestra and her full vocal prowess is on display with her rendition of All Alone Am I.

It runs 2 mintes 55 seconds and would be time well spent.

It is truly dynamic & I think would serve as a real eye opener for those who aren't familiar with anything but her Christmas music.

She was outstanding!

To answer your question RA I stayed up till past 3 a.m. & viewed Trumps speech live.

I gave the old tv clicker one hell of a workout as I visited some channels I hadn't paid attention to in years.
Of everything I saw I will admit that I liked the coverage provided by NBC. They included Lester Holt & Kristen Welker at their main table. Ms. Welker who hosts the storied program Meet The Press looked like she'd seen a ghost as the numbers began to roll in.

NBC was entertaining and really quick with the numbers

From channels 15 (NBC) to 17 (Fox) to 21(CBS) & of course channel 33 which is CNN in my neighbourhood. Then up to 26 (CBC) to see Rosie Barton squirming & looking more and more uncomfortable as the hours passed. Several quick visits to channel 28 (ABC) & then on to channel 61 (CTV News channel).

Around the horn - click - click - click all night long

Well worth the effort

NBC for the win followed by CNN in my books

Perhaps a 24 or 48 hour time sensitive thread to be locked or deleted once members have had their say?

It is after all a momentous event we're talking about

Will members be shut down or allowed to vent?

Never was impressed by his actions later in life but talent-wise he made me laugh.

One Bullard story I remember with genuine fondness was him telling how he & his brother - while hormonal teenagers - would take up positions - one in front of the home television & one behind making every possible effort to improve their crappy reception while tuning in to the Baby Blue Movie on City.

"Is that any better"?  "How about that"?
