His name was Guy Gordon and he's been doing the morning shift on WJR-AM in Detroit for several years.
That ended this week when Gordon admitted he'd been fired from the station, after refusing to take a pay cut and shift to mid-afternoons. He's decided to retire at the age of 66. Gordon was a well known area broadcaster, having previously been on TV stations WXYZ and WDIV.
The end came as a surprise for the broadcasting veteran, who at least got one final sign-off for listeners.
"Gordon said goodbye in an eight-minute appearance at the end of the morning show Tuesday, thanking listeners and colleagues, calling WJR "the finest radio station in America," and explaining that with his heart and treasured teammates on the morning show, "I didn’t think that maybe I would do my best work in another role."
"If this is the end of the career," he said, "I have no grievances. I'm Lou Gehrig without the horrible disease. I'm the luckiest man on Earth."

I remember when I lived in Michigan as a boy, WJR was the "Great voice of the Great Lakes"
They were the broadcaster of the Tigers with Ernie Harwell............and they many interesting programs...They even had a live morning show and when I was with a band in 1970 we performed live in their studio in the Fisher Building.
There ratings have certainly gone way down, so you hope for the best for them
I am showing my age....they had a sportscaster who had a daily show and his name was Bob Reynolds
his sponsor's slogan.....it's delightful, it's delovely, it's Desoto ( a Chrysler product that ended production in the 1961 model year)

Speaking of Michigan radio, that ice wasn't nice to many stations. But I suppose it will be a good DX opportunity for some.

I think J. P. McCarthy ruled Detroit Morning Drive on WJR for 30+ years. Sort of the Motor City Wally Crouter. Unlike Crouter, McCarthy died at a fairly young age, only 62 in 1995.

Thanks for the extra link. I'm not sure why I can get through but others can't. Seems to happen a lot. I might just go the safe route from now on and eschew the original page just in case.
