Thinking about turkeytop's question about shows you watched as a kid.  This is the opposite.  Did you have a time  when you didn't watch TV at all for an extended time or very little?

When I went to college for 3 years, I hardly watched any television.  Sometimes a bit if I went home on weekends.  I can't say I really missed it that much at the time.  I went months not watching one show.  I was just out of the habit, and too busy.  Also in college the social life can be intense!

So did you ever go for an extended time for whatever reason not watching television?  And did you miss TV?

When I went off to University in September 1972, I lived off campus and didn't own a tv set. Also to busy with readings, assignments and the occasional night at one of the campus pubs.

I loved The Rifleman and Have Gun Will Travel. A good guy wearing black. That was certainly different. And that ominous theme song with the gun pointed to the viewer. Always watched the Friendly Giant in the morning and The Professor's Hideaway in the afternoon. Does anyone remember having to turn the tv on 20 minutes before Saturday Morning cartoons began [to let the tubes warm up}? Snow, test pattern, Canadian and U.S. National Anthems, announcing of the stations audio/visual power then finally... [station call letters] begins another broadcast day. For me that was WGR ch 2 which always began their Saturdays at 7:30 with Felix The Cat.

Apparently, last year Sony TV was not willing to take another S.W.A.T. renewal at a flat licence fee. CBS agreed to an increased licence fee but cut the episode order from 22 to 13. Sony passed and CBS cancelled the series. However, the two sides eventually hammered out a deal as the series ratings are up 11% from last season. In addition, S.W.A.T. is a strong International seller.

LOL BIG TIME!

When you're DXing on your car radio, you either pull over or you get nailed for distracted driving. Fortunately for OJ, when he was confirming an ID on 103.3 KKCW way up in Beaverton OR, the police were waiting through national ads on 101.1 just before Portland's Morning News on KXL. Had the police not been DXing, they might very well have nailed him with a charge even the late great Johnnie Cochran could not have disputed.

Actually it is quite easy to DX on the 401 in rush hour bumper to bumper traffic. I can keep my eyes on the road while I change stations manually on my steering wheel.

I believe that building was built from scratch for CJBK. In its day it was quite a modern looking structure. I went there a couple of times to pick up an album I had won. It had a beautiful reception area.

As Bell acquired more London radio stations, former fierce competitor CKSL AM 1410 and CIQM 97.5 were moved into the building for a total of 4 stations broadcasting from this facility.

The building has been up for sale for a while. The FM stations now operate from the CFPL TV building on Communications Rd. Both AM stations were shut down are are now silent.

Yes the building was constructed for CJBK and you are right, it was a very modern and attractive structure for it's day.  I think they were asking $1.9 million for the building and property.

CFPL TV was doubled in size and had a major renovation in 1985.  This was back in the days when they were making money and still a CBC affiliate.   At this time the station had about 200 employees.  CFPL TV is a nice looking building and would have lots of room for the radio stations.  Wonder how many people work in that facility now?

Last June I took my 6 year old grandson for a tour of some of the tower facilities around London. I tried to explain as simply as possible how radio signals were emanating from the towers. Maybe radio would interest him as it did me. We drove up to the CFPL TV studio and tower. You are right it is a nice looking facility with plenty of parking and no trespassing signs too. I did not think anyone would mind a little boy getting out of the vehicle and looking at the very tall tower adjacent to the studio. What struck me is how much land the facility occupies with its tower. This is in the very desirable Westmount area of London. The land must be worth a fortune. More the the TV station is worth?

Here's the Google Earth link if you want to see for yourself.

When I first started to DX, I actually wrote to the FCC and asked if they had a book listing all the U.S. radio stations with their broadcasting power. They actually replied explaining that because of constant changes in call letters each year, any publication would be inaccurate very quickly. However, they recommended that White's Radio Log would be useful in my DX hobby and it was. Years later I would discover the Gold Standard of AM station lists. The annual National Radio Club publication is incredibly detailed.

Buffalo, which once occupied a much higher perch, is still in 59th place. For those in Windsor, Detroit ranks at a respectable #14.

But did you ever wonder which place below the border is the lowest of the low in terms of ratings market? It's Grand Forks, North Dakota, which ranks 572 out of 572. Imagine competing for that audience.

The list isn't for everyone and only involves the U.S., but I found it fascinating nonetheless. If you feel the same way, take a peek at it here

The Grand Forks market will be familiar to Winnipeg audiences. That’s where people go if they want to shop in the US and that’s where their US TV affiliates come from on cable.

Minneapolis/St. Paul affilliates are also available to Manitoba cable customers.

Or you could just watch ABC's two hour eclipse special. I am sure somewhere along the path of totality the skies will be clear. Outside my apartment building there will be 99.706 coverage. If I walk the 4 blocks to my local pub, it jumps to 99.726 coverage. If Monday is overcast, it only cost me $19 for my solar glasses. I can always save them for the next GTA solar eclipse on Oct 26, 2144. Or maybe not.

That #572 is the Market Code. Grand Forks actually ranks 243rd, but still last.

My first AM catch was WBT Charlotte. A school friend was into DXing and told me about a top 40  station in Boston at 1030. I said  that's not possible. CFRB and CHUM are too close. He replied not at night. I checked it out. Wow! He was correct. Bruce Bradley was the jock. Signal was as clear as CHUM. I soon discovered KDKA and WHO.  The other 50K blow torches would soon follow. Most memorable AM catch was in 1977. I heard KNBR San Francisco behind WPTF Raleigh. CFTR had been off the air that night for transmitter maintenance. My first e-skip tv catch happened in early summer 1965. I was watching Saturday morning cartoons. Why was I getting Underdog on ch 2 AND ch 3. Turns out the ch 3 was KARD [now KSNW] Wichita,Ks. In later years, I began taping my e-skip, putting it on pause and photographing the station ID, most of which I still have today. As for FM, locally the first two I remember were 98.9 in Rochester and 103.7 in Erie around 1969. WCCK was my introduction to top 40 on FM. After that, CHUM, CKOC and CKFH never sounded quite as good.

Toronto residents had to wait until June 26, 1953 to get their first look at TV Guide. Only five channels were listed.        WSYR [now WSTM] ch 3 Syracuse. WBEN [now WIVB] ch 4 Buffalo. WHAM ch 6 [now WROC CH 8] Rochester. WHEN ch 8 [now WTVH ch 5] Syracuse and CBLT ch 9 [now ch 20]  Toronto. Some additional Trivia. Original cost of .15 remained until June 1st 1974 increase to .20. The price went to .25 with the 1974 Fall Preview issue. When the Digest version was discontinued in 2005, price was $2.49. Most TV Guide cover appearances? Lucille Ball. Some sources say 34 others 39. [I wasn't going to count them] Bottomline, she is first by a wide margin, Johnny Carson [28] Mary Tyler Moore and Micheal Landon [27] are the closest to Lucy. The most valuable cover is the Jan 23, 1953 edition featuring Marilyn Monroe. This edition was only available in NYC and occured before the magazine's national launch in April 1953. Current going rate about 3K. The Lucy's baby cover edition is running around 2K.

March 30, 1959 WNED signed on ch 17 for the first time, a mere six months after WBUF shut down after a less than successful two year UHF  experiment as Buffalo's NBC affiliate. During this time, WGR was the ABC station for Western New York.
