The singer was on AM640 Tuesday, and the subject of his new record, "51st State," came up. You can probably tell from the name it's a protest song against the craziness about Canada joining the United States, a favourite meme from the current White House.
He says he can't understand why there would be reluctance by some Canadian radio stations to play it, with them claiming it could upset some listeners. But it's pretty obvious most listeners who live here support his position. And he says he asked his management for a list of the stations that vetoed the tune, but they refused to provide any call letters.
It's been a while since I've heard of any song, especially CanCon, being boycotted by a Canadian radio station. We may never know who said no, but I hope it's none of the stations here that might otherwise put Bryan Adams on their playlists.

Nobody's "boycotting" or "vetoing" it. They're not playing it because it's terrible cheese. Some artists whose best songwriting days have long past don't know when to stop.
On the plus side, it'll give fans a great opportunity to grab a beer during his otherwise excellent live shows.

exactly

It's a fair comment, although Adams is convinced it's more political than musical.

It's not that the song is that bad and will 'upset some listeners' it's a patriotic anthem that is upsetting the MapleMAGA idiots, cloud yellers, Fuck Carney traitors and those that manage/own the media properties that could play the song...I think Adams has a point here considering today's political landscape in various parts of Canada and the continent.

Who would play it? Classic Hits and Classic Rock stations don't play new music from classic rock artists; it's not what listeners are there for. Top 40 listeners don't know who he is. The song is cringe.

I've been boycotting Adams for years and for political reasons. We in the labour movement call hin "Scab Adams" for his record of crossing picket lines to perform.

Is country radio playing the song? I know it is not a country song per se but country stations tend to play music that lyrically tell a story. And country stations certainly have opened up to some music that doesn't have a traditional country sound.

Fair question, but no.

Not a bad idea. Add a slide guitar in there and it's country through and through.

I have only heard this song once, AM740 played it when it was first released. Since then, I haven’t heard them play it again. To be honest, not Adams’ best writing but I get his sentiment. I’m waiting for his next one about Lake Ontario….!

And that’s the beauty of being on a board such as SOWNY, you don’t need to be asked for your opinion to give it! That’s what it’s here for, so opine away jughead!

I listened to the song online this morning and I actually thought it was ok. As the kids would say On AB's Rate-A-Record feature. "It has a good beat and you can dance to it" Just my two cents worth.

His song isnt "Chum FM" worthy as its rock, and its not "classic" to be played on eitheir Q107 or Boom. So theres that.

He's at it again. Bryan Adams has released a new song about the name change of Lake Ontario to "Lake America" by U.S. President Donald Trump, a direct attack on his ridiculous and controversial Executive Order.
"The lyrics trace the lake’s history, from glacial formation and Indigenous stewardship to European exploration and industrial development. Adams references the Iroquois name for the lake, “lake of shining waters,” before turning to contemporary American politics and what he portrays as a manufactured controversy.
“Lake Ontario” is the latest addition to How’s It Goin’, an album built around Canadian history, geography and culture. The 13-track digital edition includes previously released songs such as “51st State” and “The Ballad of Terry Fox,” alongside “The Battle of Lundy’s Lane,” “Diesel and Dirt” and the title track."
Along with the new tune comes new questions about whether radio stations will actually play it - although it's getting exposure in news bites, as the media reports on the existence of the song itself. Whether it lasts past that initial publicity blast remains to be seen.
While Trump isn't named in the piece, someone else is - it's believed to be the first song to openly mention the infamous Epstein files.
The new album containing the tune will be released on November 6th.

John Moore just played some of this song and talked about it and I was a bit surprised that Epstein was mentioned by name. I only heard a bit of it but it didn’t strike me as catchy and I wonder if Adam’s is just cashing in on the Elbows Up vibe!

He's the only one who I actualy like getting political in his songs.
Because, he's right on all the stuff going on down there.
The U.s is becoming a third-world dictatership.

Subjective obviously, but that’s not a tune I enjoyed.
Felt like he tried way too hard. It was horrible actually. lol
My opinion, stick to the hits BA.

Yeah, it's not exactly in the same league as classic protest songs like "Eve of Destruction", "For What It's Worth" or "Fortunate Son", but I'm sure a good portion of the country will gobble it up.
A good song, political or not, should have a strong melody and something that sticks to your ribs. I do think this song and "51st State" are lacking those elements. and I'm not saying that to be political. (Although I can just imagine some posters here shouting "Maple MAGA!!!" at the screen as I type this. Whatever...lol). I just don't think they're particularly strong songs.
To his credit, I do think Adams' non-protest song "The Ballad of Terry Fox" from the same forthcoming album is actually quite good.

for me these Bryan Adam's protest songs fall under demonstrating absurdity with absurdity... somewhat fitting when looked at in that context. The lyrics are really just a speech directed at the giant cheeze puff.

Musically, Lake Ontario is boring. But I've never been an Adams fan, for that reason. I love protest songs, but Lake Ontario feels like a shopping list. It might tick off the right boxes and play well enough at demos, but lyrically it's superficial and melodically it's flat. OTOH I do find a lot of contemporary hit and pop music on our airwaves to be melodically flat. Drake comes to mind.

Don't get me started on drake and the other rappers that play on CHR stations.
I miss the days where CHR would also play more caribian music and less rap.

I couldn’t agree more with you Saul. I do try to listen to current pop but don’t usually last long. I find many of them borderline bland and lacking in composition, like many don’t have a bridge for example, they tend to start, repeat, end. I can’t imagine a song like Bohemian Rhapsody being composed in this day and age!

There's a few I like for the beat, but most, I don't like.
I love songs with stories, powerfull vocals such as demis roussos, and where the singer has melody.
90s pop and 00s pop is better than 2026 poprap.

I don't mind the song but know it likely won't get much airplay. Maybe in some small or medium sized markets that are owned by smaller operators. Nice photography of Lake Ontario.
Interesting what the reaction has been in the US where Adams has performed 51st state..Bryan Adams says his protest song gets standing ovations in red states
