This Is The Law

Does anyone remember this game show on CBC back in the 70s. It featured panelists

It was probably scripted, but Charlton and Solway always attacked each other.

They would play a short video showing people breaking an obscure law somwhere in Canada. Like dragging a dead horse down the street in Red Deer, or a bartender in Kingston ON throwing a drunk out through a different door than the one he had entered through, then the panelists would try to figure out just what law had been broken.

It was a good show.

Welcome aboard, kid. I'm 80. I turned 80 in March and it's been downhill ever since. You still have 15 years to go before you turn 80. Enjoy every one of them. Once yoy hit 80, the party's over.

The series ran from 1971-76. Dini Petty was on the show in the first season.

I'm 63 and enjoyed watching This Is The Law as a kid.
Hart Pomerantz and his screen writer brother Earl are national treasures.
Hart literally was an actor portraying a legal expert on TV while he actually was a lawyer in real life.

When a group of about 20 of us were wrongfully dismissed from a radio station where we worked (for no real cause beyond budget cutting,) we went to Hart Pomerantz to sue the company that owned the place. It took a while, but we won and got some extra money out of them.

I remember being in his office and seeing a cheque framed on the wall. It was signed by Woody Allen.

I often wonder how he felt that his partner in comedy wound up doing a lot better in showbiz than he did. His name? Lorne Michaels, the longtime producer of Saturday Night Live.

Re: This Is The Law

And Paul Soles (aka the voice of Spiderman in the original cartoon) played the lawbreaker in the short film they did for each round.

As mentioned, Hart Pomerantz was Lorne Michaels' former writing partner and they eventually went to LA to write for Laugh-In. They were also performing partners (Lorne was the straight man) on Hart and Lorne's Terrific Hour. Pomerantz saw comedy as a sideline and eventually returned to his legal practice while Micheals went back to the US. Who knows, if they'd stayed together Pomerantz might have been SNL's co-producer with Michaels?
