DXers Hear Low Power Detroit Area AM Radio Station - In Finland
Imagine being in a place so remote, there's virtually nothing to block any radio signal or any electronic interference to get in the way. That's what led two DXers in Finland to pull in Detroit's WCHB on the terrible frequency of 1340 AM. Nice catch!

Finland is amazing. Just about any time you hear of anyone catching some really rare DX it's always from Finland. There are places there where they rent out cabins in the woods just for DXers.

I've NEVER heard WCHB 1340, which is actually in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak, even though it's pretty much straight down the 401 (and a couple other small highways). And, believe me, I have tried, even listening live to a remote SDR and waiting for similar content on the radio. Maybe when they finally open the Gordie Howe Bridge...

It's in the back of my mind to do that... I've been there once but my spouse and I had taken my mother to St Petersburg and decided to add a leg in Helsinki before visiting family in Serbia, so a DXpedition wasn't exactly in the cards for that trip. It's a long haul and costly. But I should ...

It's not exactly unheard of for far-away stations on "graveyard" frequencies to be picked up like that at remarkable distances. It's not just the big 24/7 50kW class A and Bs that are subject to the skywave phenomenon. Back in 2019 a topic was posted on this forum regarding a DX reception of CKNT 960 in Carbonear, Newfoundland by an amateur radio operator.

WCHB was heard as recently as the end of January at my location in North York in the the jumblemush that is 1340.
Usually at night 1340 is a mishmash of WNCO-Ashland OH, WJOI-Milwaukee WI, WOUB-Athens OH, WMBO-Auburn NY, WCHB-Royal Oak, WJRW-Grand Rapids and sometimes even WLVL-Lockport. WMBO will really sticks out as they will be playing the same oldies as on 1390-WFBL in Syracuse ("The Dinosaur").

It's not exactly unheard of for far-away stations on "graveyard" frequencies to be picked up like that at remarkable distances. It's not just the big 24/7 50kW class A and Bs that are subject to the skywave phenomenon. Back in 2019 a topic was posted on this forum regarding a DX reception of CKNT 960 in Carbonear, Newfoundland by an amateur radio operator.
From coastal Nfld I've heard pirates from Greece, Netherlands and possible Macedonia on the upper part of AM, as well as a few weather and shipping beacons on AM.

Sadly, Boardhost does not allow for that. You can either upload something to YouTube, which can be put up here, or link from an audio site like SoundCloud. It would be nice if they did have that capability.

Those call letters sounded familiar to me. Perhaps because bup until 2017 they belonged to what is now 1200 WMUZ which I have occasionally heard in the GTA.

And for a much longer period of time they were on 1440 in Inkster. Now 1440 has WMKM with gospel music.

Well, finally managed to nail down WCHB here in the Kawarthas. Was it a matter of time, or because I exhibited a rare moment of patience? Anyhow, two fairly clear IDs seconds apart, but no other discernable content. Now have just one Michigan station yet to be heard here on 1340, WCSR in Hillsdale MI. Has anyone ever heard that one? I'm also now down to having heard all but 7 AM stations currently on-air in MI. Target list now is: 920 WMPL Hancock, 1110 WUNN Mason, 1220 WBCH Hastings, 1290 WNIL Niles, 1340 WCSR Hillsdale, 1450 WMIQ Iron Mountain, and 1580 St. Johns.

The 1580 St Johns I caught at sunset sign off one day back during the Reagan Administration. I think that was about 5 call changes ago. Hancock on 920 I caught once more recently in 2014.
The other Michigan stations you speak of have thusfar eluded me.
