Re: ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel "Indefinitely" Over Charlie Kirk Comments

Well now, here's something you don't see every day - a rant about what happened to Jimmy Kimmel and an outright diatribe against the American President being like a foreign dictator.

Doesn't sound too unusual?

It does if it happens on Fox News.

And it did.

The Dems never seem to have what it takes to fight hard, have that push-through attitude, and use what's often called the bully pulpit. They'll be soft, not wanting to alienate the middle. Always are.

Re: ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel "Indefinitely" Over Charlie Kirk Comments

Interesting to note that the Fox commentator Harold Ford Jr. is also a democrat.  Also worth noting what he said at the end of the clip may be the most important.  He held up his cell phone and commented that Brendan Carr the chairman of the FCC should be more concerned about how to regulate this rather than broadcast networks.  Too bad the clip didn't include the reaction from the rest of the Fox panel to what Ford said about president Trump.

In principle I agree. My point is that things the right have done in the US, like the Fairness Doctrine, never seem to get reversed by succeeding Dem administrations. Something needs to be done to make it brutally difficult for a future president to go rogue like this; and to somehow stop the US court system from having so much political clout; and to stop or reduce the degree Big Money has in funding and essentially owning elections. Plus there's the wholesale obliteration of the EPA and other agencies - will the Dems have the intestinal fortitude to fully reverse course (perhaps even to something better than before)?  I don't want another dictator; but there have to be ways to reverse the damage without resorting to undemocratic means.

The View was quiet on this issue. Not a word.

Supposedly, this is the reason: The View was pre-taped before this entire Kimmel thing blew up, so they couldn't talk about something hadn't happened yet.

The story states with some certainty that ABC did not issue any edicts over talking about the Kimmel cancelling. We'll see what they do in the coming week.

As if things weren't bad enough. Someone shot up KXTV, the ABC affiliate in Sacramento Friday, although officials say they don't know if there's any relation to the Kimmel issue.

The station had been the site of a protest by people unhappy with the decision to pull the late night show and its implications for Free Speech.

Fortunately, while there are bullet holes in the station lobby's window, no one was hurt.

It just keeps getting uglier.

Another explanation for what happened? The guy's so thin-skinned, nothing would surprise me.

Is Trump targeting broadcast TV because he was fired by NBC?

KXTV doesn’t even have control over Kimmel. KXTV is owned by neither ABC or Nexstar, and they’re also not owned by Sinclair.

Given the hooliganism of violence by any camp, it appears that the subleties of media ownership were way over the perps head.

What Kimmel tweeted out on the day of the shooting:

Brendan Carr being an ass:

Seeing the backlash (in the form of boycotts) happening all over my socials today:

‘Lost’ Creator Damon Lindelof Won't Work With Disney Until Jimmy Kimmel Suspension Is Lifted

https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/damon-lindelof-pledges-not-to-work-with-disney-jimmy-kimmel-suspension-1236523784/

“I was shocked, saddened and infuriated by yesterday’s suspension and look forward to it being lifted soon. If it isn’t, I can’t in good conscience work for the company that imposed it... If you’re about to fire up in my comments, just ask yourself if you know the difference between hate speech and a joke.I think you still do.”

I remember RA saying in the other thread that he's worried about his sister in NYC, and this post below made me think of how I can no longer talk about Trump or his regime with any of my Canadian friends living in the USA because we use Instagram or Facebook messenger and they're fearful that whenever they cross the border back up to Canada and then go back to the US again, their social media accounts will be inspected for any anti-Trump posts or conversations. That's how fearful they are.

But consider Occam's razor: the simplest explanation is usually the right one.

It's extremely unlikely that both Colbert and Kimmel were cancelled in the exact same weeks that the administration was complaining about their comments regarding the Orange One. It just does not make sense that CBS and ABC would suddenly decide at those exact moments to cancel their shows because of ratings and not appeasement.

The fact the companies involved all have multi-billion dollar mergers that need U.S. government approval to go through cannot be a coincidence. It seems clear to anyone looking at this from a distance that the pressure to get those deals approved had a lot to do with what happened to both hosts. So they sacrificed their precious First Amendment in the name of business and profit.

Both Nexstar and Sinclair have big merger deal in the works and they've now proven there's nothing they won't do to get them to go through. So when a certain President mentions he hates both shows, here's a perfect way to suck up to him and ensure he'll let those in charge know that the deals can be approved.

The timing of all this makes it obvious it has nothing to do with how funny Kimmel or Colbert may be, and that anyone looking at it can see it simply could not have happened any other way. Once is a coincidence. Twice is a pattern. This swap of Free Speech for profit is what makes it so disturbing. And I suspect it's not over yet.

Re: ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel "Indefinitely" Over Charlie Kirk Comments

In 1959 CBC host Joyce Davidson was interviewed on NBC's Today Show about the Queen's Royal Visit to Canada, which was underway. She said ""Like most Canadians, I am indifferent to the visit of the Queen". The press in Canada lambasted her, MPs made irate protestations, her children were taunted at school, she was forced to resign from the CBC and lost various contracts she had to appear in commercials. Chatelaine published an article on Davidson in the summer of 1960 titled "Must I leave Canada?” and in 1961, she did, moving to the US.

"Secret" talks are said to be underway between Kimmel and ABC brass to bring him back soon.

Meanwhile, there are new indications, beyond the two affiliate companies refusing to carry his show, as to why ABC may have balked at the return.

"Reports indicate Kimmel had prepared another pointed monologue for Wednesday’s show, this time aimed at Fox News and MAGA supporters. Executives at ABC and Disney reportedly asked him to soften the remarks, but he refused, leading directly to the suspension."

If they do manage to reach an agreement for a return, one thing is almost certain - his first show back will likely be the biggest rated Kimmel episode of all time.

Re: ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel "Indefinitely" Over Charlie Kirk Comments

A reminder of what Trump said back in March of this year:

He wanted it to be illegal for newspapers to criticize him. He then sued some newspapers (and just lost his most recent one against the New York Times thankfully, but he can still appeal). Obviously he would prefer that absolutely no one can say a single negative thing against him, probably so he can live in a bubble where he thinks everybody loves him and his policies, exactly as how dictators like it.

Whether a comedian is humourous and/or entertaining is subjective. Personally I find him neither, so I choose not to watch his show. Many others have a different viewpoint.
