At the rock radio station I worked at we had an assistant production manager who'd always say "Be a-lert, the world needs more lerts." during emergency tests. Needless to say Ken never made it to production manager.

Good idea Buzzy Krumhunger, or... a radio station could use RA's post as an opportunity to do a behind the scenes look with the traffic reporters. Several short clips, the Coles Notes on how the traffic reports are created, what sources they use, how to access the traffic reports on the app ;), AND how useful handsfree updates from listeners who are driving are to the station and the community and first responders when an accident or other incident, a tire on the road etc occurs. If possible, come up with a handle for the feature as witty as 1010's "Campaign Trail Mix" and finally go all the way and get it sponsored.

p.s. Last Friday I heard a 1010 traffic reporter read ad copy during a live update that mentions that we're still in winter... here's a request to  whoever is in charge of writing the ad copy, please update the season.

Transylvania 6-5000, link above, is one of my favorite Bugs Bunny cartoons along with Hansel and Gretel, the Barber of Seville, Bugs as the bull fighter, the one where Tweety swallows the Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde formula, the Claude cat cartoon with the two mice and the other one with the yappy puppy who sends Claude in a fright up to the ceiling, Yosemite Sam and the one where he dams up the water when Bugs is having a shower, the opera singer with Bugs as the conductor, Bugs and Christopher Columbus with the baseball that travels around the world and the Bugs Bunny versus Wile E. Coyote toons and Bugs Bunny versus the Tasmanian Devil.

There used to be a Toronto comedy troupe named The Maroons.

Thanks for this RA! πŸ₯•

Sidebar: speaking of Match Game, another odd couple Elizabeth Hurley has hooked up with Billy Ray Cyrus.
Stars, they're just like us! as the fan magazine says.

After the last few months of anxiety/limbo/anxiety created by the short-fingered vulgarian, plus the possibility of a PP gov., a few hours of the right kind of mindless television with a grilled cheese sandwich and a glass of chocolate milk would be very very welcome.

Green Day totally rocking it currently on YouTube  with previous performances from other artists saved and available to watch on the Coachella channel. It's free. It's always cool to see how musicians respond to the challenge of playing live in front of a huge audience.

Green Day's stage presence reminds me how studio bound a lot of the newer Auto-Tune artists are when it comes to performing.

Wouldn't be surprised if some clips from the show end up on radio for Monday's shows.

This will be one of those UTI episodes I listen to more than once.

Blooper reels are the best.

The number of times you'd goof during a read of an in-house radio spot and ask the production guy to not save it and they'd manage to say with a straight face "sure, no problem" only to have it part of the next blooper reel.

A station blooper reel is one of the things I wish I'd kept from my radio days.

The secret to a top notch funny reel is in the editing.

Have you heard the new RONA radio ads?

The creeeeaky wood deck spot voiced by a female voice actor is the one I've heard the most on Newstalk 1010. The listener part of me has winced. The voice actor part of me admires the way the woman captures the creaky tones of the wood in her delivery.

There's at least another one in the hardware store series with a male voice actor but I heard it once and was distracted at the time so just remember thinking that it was a new spot and it was annoying.

Because of the offbeat nature of the RONA radio ads, with their "irritating to get noticed" copy, could the Wegovy creative team also be responsible for these.

RONA as acronym for Really Over Nebulous? Nonsensical Ads

Whatever happened to clear ad copy with a stop you in your tracks great RADIO VOICE. Not announcer-y, just a beautiful voice.

P.S. the Rybelsus ad is playing on 1010 as I type this. 🀨😁

You'd think the marketing departments of the pharmaceutical giants would come up with better names for their inventions. They once created a medicated spray for jock itch and called it "Clutch."
Rybelsus makes me think of RibaldUs.

There are all kinds of rabbit holes to wander down on YT and one of the most fun: all the spoof and parody commercials for drug products.

A few are in questionable taste, pun not intended, like this Ozempic for Ramadan ad from SNL.

They probably have to use up the block of airtime already purchased and are weighing the pros and cons of continuing to use the current itcheration, er, iteration or spend time and money to revamp and redo it.

I'd go for the Monty Python approach. Start off the new spot with a few seconds of the old one then have it suddenly cut off with a crisp voice ordering " Stop this ad." and swing into the new ad, or even a Graham Chapman type voice saying "The people who put this together have been sacked. We now wegovy to this..." and into the new spot with a pleasant, slightly throaty female voice gently extolling the virtues of Wegovy, playing around with the word 'Wegovy.'

Or to put it another way, Homer Simpson and his unrelenting ability to consume endless donuts nonstop (a la a certain devilish Treehouse of Horror episode) is a rare phenomenon when it comes to humans.

Now if you added other artists covering Elton or the Stones to the playlist that might help.

I would love to hear the goof ups and outtakes of the Wegovy recording session. The people involved with producing such a Whiskey Tango Foxtrot ad will probably be relieved it's being pulled and the female voice actor responsible will hope those who know she voiced it will keep it to themselves.

Do you think the godawful dreadfullness that was the Wegovy ad will become a reference point for future radio spots?
(In a production studio somewhere in the city a conversation between the director and production wizard, with the talent silently standing by...)
Director: "Well, it's not very good, but it's no where near as shitty as that Wegovy spot."
P: "True and we're tight for time, let's leave it and see if the client will sign off on it?"
D: "Sounds good."
P:"Actually it doesn't."
D:"Don't be a smartass."

I have yet another awful ad nomination: the newish Sleep Country ad about the invisible to the eye crawlies that build up on our pillows is mite-ily creepy.

Sidebar: I also popped on here to see if anyone on the big yellow board had posted on how the Hooters bankruptcy was covered or uncovered on the radio shows this morning cause of all the rich headline possibilities but nada...

My top two, pun intended:

Hooters Bankruptcy: School of hard knockers.

Hooters Front Closure: Thanks for the mammaries.

I did enjoy the way the Hooters topic was touched on during John Moore's show, the talk was tongue in cheek and not foot in mouth.

Not surprised RA posted about this woman's "performance."

I've only heard this new irritating as nails on chalkboard, Donald Trump talking, any picture of PP, radio spot twice this morning on 1010 and both times I wanted to lunge for the volume dial.

I loathe the Kars for Kids jingle, am not keen on the single awful note start of Lion King ad and the Spence ads are..well, they're the *Spence ads* and so therefore are aural itching powder but I would rather hear all three of these back to back and throw in a "Mega Tank!" than wince through this newest commercial terror of the airwaves once.

We-go-oy-vey

It's a good bet that 1010's board ops turn down the monitor when the W ad is running.

p.s. am getting a kick out of the new sponsor for 1010's traffic (I think) it's a product to cure erectile disfunction. now they just need to develop and market one to cure politically correct-ile disfunction and the world will be a better place

p.p.s. have not heard the not good very terrible blood donor spot, yet, so that's something to look forward to, thanks Jody, I think?

There are a handful of familiar names who've been part of Canada's radio and television history for decades and Tom Harrington is one of them.

From broadcasting at the Atlanta Olympics, building CBC's iconic Marketplace tv show, covering elections and being on the radio reporting the news, his versatility is a given.

After his final Your World Tonight at 6 pm. and almost 44 years in the business, Tom Harrington retired.

Above is a wonderful interview with Tom talking about his career. I was struck by something he said when quoting a player he had interviewed who was retiring that spoke to how Tom also feels about leaving journalism. "I'm not going to miss the game. I'm going to miss the room."

Congratulations on your retirement Mr. Harrington and thank you for all the entertaining, interesting and compelling stories.

Edit: Friday 6:30 pm Tom Harrington made it a point of saying *almost* 44 years during his eloquent sign off on-air just now and it's worth getting right.

The other dream I started having a few years ago when I was playing around with the idea of getting into voiceover again. I'm standing in a small booth in front of the mic with the copy on the stand and wearing headphones, feeling confident and ready to go. I open my mouth to start the read and realize I have an entire mouthful of sickenly sweet bubblegum.
